This made me think that if they get so far down the list that they come to my name, well, building entry doctrine is not going to be the issue we're concerned about. We'll be in "The Road" territory by then.

    Agreed, fine work @benpark.
I also have to say @Ultradave and I very much like @ChrisND's Metal on Metal map (we're playing Pershing vs Tiger).  Deceptively simple-looking, but not.

Field Artillery chiming in. I think I have a solution to the method of building entry and clearing discussion.
    Guess. 🙂

But seriously, we had no real MOUT training back then - not as you think of it today. They did build a plywood "town" out on the ranges, but it was brand new. Any village/town training we had was for very small unit, hostage rescue type situations - things that are more likely handled by SF troops today, but back then there was no Delta Force (formed while I was there), and that was not the SF Green Berets focus. So 82d and Rangers trained for that sort of thing. For general town clearing though, our main mission at the time was assumed to be part of REFORGER, in which case, it's a pretty much a free fire zone ahead of you. Plus we'd be on the defensive. We didn't use the fake town for that kind of training.
All of this "stack up" building room entry tactics is more new than my background, and shaped by Iraq and Afghanistan rather than Cold War experience where combatants are mixed with civilians almost constantly, so you can't just knock buildings down.
My solution above is in jest, in case there is any doubt. It's mpractical in many situations due to the likely presence of civilians. Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza are great examples. In Germany in a hypothetical WW3, it would have been very different. We'd assume the civilians had evacuated west behind us, and quickly. Soviet forces were unlikely to be occupying towns, but rather bypassing them and continuing forward.

There isn't a listing for the big maps I made for the DF module included anywhere, but I'll attach some images of each them here for some visual reference for people looking to use them for their own purposes. These were either chopped up for the campaigns, QB's, and for the Rethem scenario that I made. There's a good deal of territory that wasn't used, as well.
    Rethem:

    Cologne/Koln:

    Heister:

    Kleve/Materborn:

    Remagen:

Maybe it's just my usage of them, but my Russian tanks excel at one thing and that's burning after being hit by (usually) one shell.

They really are outstanding at this.

"Follow" command that works in terrain or on roads, and duplicates the waypoints for each following unit so adjustments can be made.

An AVRE with a 3-man crew is a one shot weapon because there is no one to reload the petard mortar. The 6-man unified crew was a deliberate choice to ensure a fully-functional vehicle without having to buy a separate unit.

Mac user, so once there was no more Rosetta, no more CMBO. That was quite a while ago. And I never had CMBB (which sounds like it was great). Many many hours of fun with CMBO though.

I'm confused.  If the Pershing was in CMBO, we have been able to use it for 22 years with the Pershing.  CMSF1 has been out 15 years.  CMBN has only been out 12 years.

It does, actually, if they know it's futile and you have limited shots. Fast forward to Cold War era and we would never take a frontal shot on a Soviet tank with a LAW. No point. You'll just make them angry. You would always wait until you had a side or rear shot and then hope to disable them (with a LAW the best you could hope for is blowing off a bogie wheel or jamming the tracks.)
If they were about to run you over, then I suppose, yes, shoot. Anything to divert them at that point.

Seems to be cosmetic. Tested with some dips and hills against King Tigers and the shooting was fine, regardless of what the mantlet looked like, at least until they all got knocked out.

That FI scenario about the Elephant in the middle of the village....   in early testing it started as a Sturmtiger. I was able to get a keyhole side shot on it and it was the biggest explosion I've ever seen in CM, and flattened 2 of the buildings near it. Spectacular. When they go, they really go.

For any macos users, Time Machine is an excellent tool.

Has saved me numerous times from bad/broken installs of many things.

    "Oh, there's a new update of X."
    Run Time Machine to backup.
    Install update X.
    "WTF? Things are totally broken."
Time Machine restore back to just before the install of the rogue update, and all is well.

I've used it to back out a CM install also -- I forget which patch misbehaved on my machine for CMRT, but having a 'Undo' button is awesome.

Regardless of Steam/notSteam discussions, you won't be sorry purchasing Fire and Rubble and you for sure will enjoy the battle pack. Well, at least as far as describing enduring @George MC's devilish surprises qualifies as enjoyment.
Just kidding. George's scenarios are some of the best out there. But there are ALWAYS evil surprises.

Get the whole FI package when you do. There's a LOT of variety in forces and equipment in, especially in the DLCs, and some great scenarios all around. It's a very different experience from the hedgerows and the steppes!

I can recall in the first Alpha playing a quick scenario and immediately noticing that CMCW felt more like WW2 + CMBS, not aligned directly with one or the other.  It was "neer peer" in just about every sense as each side had strengths that offset the others weaknesses, and vice versa.  This relationship shifted over time as one moved from '79-'82.

Ah, thanks for adding a some of the US perspective. My post was from the Soviet perspective and I just realized that the OP asked about general advice.
I agree about the M113s. They are roughly on par with BTRs. Sometimes you have to make do with them and that .50cal can shred a BMP if you manage to surprise one from the flanks. Just nothing to rely upon.

Also I posted a copy of a little FIST Chief handbook we used to carry around. While a lot of it is artillery specific, there's a very good overview in the first parts of Soviet TOE, tactics in the attack, and then some info about US tactics in response. It may be of some help as it's real world information on what to expect and how to respond.
This is the link, which you might have missed because it's rolled over to the second page of the forum now:
