zmoney reacted to AlexUK in Grenade Reluctance
I still wish we had a specific throw grenades command. It is so frustrating to watch hardly any grenades get chucked while the smg blasts off his magazine, then has near empty mag for the attack. From films, admittedly, but it seems very common practice for grenades to get thrown en masse before a prepared close assault.

My idea would be equivalent to throw smoke command for infantry.

Just finished this yesterday if you are looking for a small infantry action with a novel scenario Objective this one is for you.
I really enjoyed the narrative and it was a tense game where I managed to win a minor victory.
I won't spoil the events but something turning up at X when I had X on wrong side of the road really messed up my plan...
I will also say that I hate RPGs (unless I have them)!!! The Americans really do not have the same firepower when it comes to these annoying weapons...
The sense of running away was perfectly conveyed...
The minor niggle was trying to learn how to use the camera in amongst the buildings to see the action, I have yet to perfect the view and getting good camera angles...
Thank you to the designer for some fun moments....
Also I would think this might be tough vs a Human Russian Oppo, but it still might be good fun....

I do a lot of checking and rechecking, maybe too much. I wish I could assign keyboard and/or mouse controls to the Up/Down movement that's driven by the mousewheel. I've got no way to emulate that, but plenty of keys not bound to anything. It would make life within the game's render box easier.
I'm using a Mac that was built for video editing, and it handles these graphics just fine, as far as I can tell. I was more surprised by the way nearby objects are clipped when the camera comes close (I love zooming in on an in-flight rocket, then unpausing and watching it zoom, that kinda thing).

I was thinking it’d be awesome if there were a mini campaign, three missions or so, that you get a Plt of M1’s and a couple Plt’s of Brads to conduct a counter attack.

zmoney reacted to The_Capt in So you just got your hands on CMCW...now what? Designers Q&A thread.
First off, thank you and welcome to the game.  This post is really a place for you guys to Q&A with the game designers.  Questions on features, campaigns or scenarios can go here and we will try to get to them to help you out.
So if you are new to the CM you probably want to start easy and small to get the feel for the game.  Check the scenario notes as designers often will highlight which side may be easy or harder.  For example, "Valley of Ashes" is by-design, pretty easy for the Blue side as an opportunity for beginners to get a feel for a larger scenario.  While the Red side of this scenario is pretty tough.  I will let the other scenario designers chime on on their babies.
I will say that the Soviet Training scenarios by Cpt Miller are a very good place to start for a lot of people as full Cold War Soviet formations, in all their glory, are a bit of a new thing for the series.
For the Campaigns, I highly recommend people start with NTC.  Bil and GeorgeMC did a really good job in putting together some very good scenarios that can get people into the groove of maneuvering in the context of a Cold War battlefield.
Then I would suggest moving onto the US Campaigns.  1982 was designed to be the primary but 1979 turned out to be really interesting, so players choice really.   1982 is probably a little easier as 1979 can be challenging with the older equipment set.
Finally, I would then suggest that players can gird their loins for the Soviet Campaigns.  These are designed to be tough and a challenge to manage.  Every battle is battalion sized and frankly pretty tough.  The March or Die version is designed to be downright unfair to the loins, but also probably the most realistic....you have been warned.
    Anyway, enjoy and have fun!

zmoney reacted to Amedeo in Soviet use of ISU-152 assault guns during the CMCW timeframe
It's widely known that, after the end of WW2, the Soviets continued to use the ISU-152 in their armed forces. Modernized versions, like the ISU-152K (1956) and ISU-152M (1959) served with first line units well into the early 1970s, when modern self propelled guns, such as the 2S1 and 2S3, were introduced.
What is, perhaps, not so widely known is that the introduction of the new generation SPGs didn't decree the instantaneous and complete disappearance of these assault guns from Soviet inventories... and units!
Here are a few photos I recently found on the net, depicting the use of ISU-152 assault guns in Soviet Army/Navy units during the late '70s and the early '80s.

Some of these vehicles were also used by "liquidators" after the infamous Chernobyl' nuclear accident.

You would need the core units file and any changes to the experience etc would have to be done in that file. You would then import that core unit file into each mission you want to sue so casualties etc can be synchronised after each mission.
I've no idea what the file might be named but it is the mission file that has the campaign briefing in it. You find the file with the campaign briefing you have found the core units file. Make your experience and leadership changes in the core units file then you will need to import that core units file into each and every mission file used in the campaign. Once that is done you can then recompile the campaign.
Making changes to each unit in each mission will not work overall in the campaign as you will still need the core units file to compile the campaign and that will for casualties to be tracked will need to be imported into each mission which will overwrite any experience/leadership changes you may have already made.
But you need to be careful making changes to core units - experience etc should be fine but watch out renaming units etc.

Game Engine Manual page 113 under 'Making Campaigns' - but maybe missing the point of the question. It sounds like you are trying to recompile the campaign using modified scenario settings. But you'll need a core units file - if you are modifying unit settings you'll need to do it via the core units file, and you'll need a campaign script. It's all explained from page 113. But I'm thinking what you are seeking to do is not going to be possible in the way you perhaps think it is.

I don’t think you came off as complaining at all. I think you’re question is valid. I served in the US Army in both Iraq and Afghanistan, we had access to all sorts of fire support. To include lots of different aircraft, but never was MLRS ever an option. I believe (and could be wrong) it’s roll is more on the operational level than tactical.

As for cluster munitions same as Napalm, it was used as a close support ordnance.

You are making me miss CM:AK.....I was always more of a CM:BB man, but I enjoyed making 'odd battles' with CM:AK, the invasion of Syria was one of my better efforts.

I like to send the first platoon over the ford into the objective on the right flank. Load them up with javelins and clear this area first. It prevents some of the fire into your flank when crossing the bridges and allows you to interdict his reinforcements. (Use your artillery for a bombardment before entering the town.) Do not use your UAVs until you get the Tunguskas. Hopefully your artillery can get one in this area; if not, your javelins will do the job.  If possible, move your first platoon Bradleys over the bridge to reinforce the infantry. Use smoke as necessary.Use your remaining force to attack the objective on the left. Use your air assets when you get at least one of the Tunguskas. Your tanks and Bradleys provide a lot of firepower to help clear buildings - use them as much as possible and conserve your infantry.  Short version, but it does work.

I just got my V shot so the chance of my dropping dead before the release is diminished. Considering that state of the world this last year, that wasn't outside the realm of possibility. People ask 'If you thought you just had a month to live how would you spend it?' Apparently in my case the answer is working feverishly on a cold war tactical game!

zmoney reacted to Sgt Joch in A Word on Follow-on Modules
I was a very militant communist during the late 70s-early 80s when I was young and thought I could change the world, but that is another story.
Most young "communists" back then were actually Marxists who thought of the Soviet Union as being only slightly better than the USA. Most Marxists believed the type of state controlled economy in the USSR set up under Lenin and Stalin had little to do with Marx's original concept and was just a different style of imperialism and capitalism with a governing class made up of top Party bureaucrats. The left-wing political filmmaker Costa Gravas released "The Confession" in the early 70s which was a powerful indictment against the Stalinist show trials in Czechoslovakia in the early 50s which had a big impact on many of us back then.
The point is that it is extremely doubtful any of the Euro communists who were actually more social-democrats than real hardline communists would have seen a Soviet invasion as a "liberation". They would actually be more likely to want to defend western democracy which despite all its flaws is still better than Soviet style "People's Democracy".

People are the best judge for themselves. If you have access to a firing range, see how well you do over 300mtrs. Remember your targets don't shoot back. With a pistol with service match at the time only the elite at the time could consistently hit the '10' at the international rapid fire UIT target at 50mtrs. With a longarm I would say you push your limits at 300mtrs. I think in the game CM got it more or less spot on in probabilities. To achieve fire superiority longarms at best suppresses only you need ordnance which explode or with plunging fire by well positioned MG's.

That’s interesting as I’ve never enjoyed QB’s. But I do tend to play solo matches. The scenario design has changed dramatically since the CM1 days. There are so many more options for designers to use. The game has changed a lot since the first series so you can’t really fall back on your memories of that in order to sway your decision on this game. They are totally different games in the way they play.
