    Hi all,
Just wanted to say hello and I hope I get to play some PBEM against some of you when I get better.
I'm a huge history fan, and also a fan of Graviteam Tactics: Mius Front, but it never quite did what I wanted. Games like Gates of Hell: Ostfront, looked gorgeous but were tactically shallow experiences that in no way represented the battles I've read about in books. The closest I could get was warg ames like War in the East 2, which still were fairly abstract.
I found out about these games a few weeks ago and...Well, with the Steam sale I've purchased CM:BS, CM:SF2 and CM:BN, plus all the respective DLCs. I've been wanting games like these for years. Can't wait to start building the hours. I've clocked up 30 hours in two weeks which, for me as a 37 year old with a job and girlfriend, is fairly extreme.

Cannot believe I didn't try them sooner.

    Nice to meet you all

    Hi All,
First post here, I'm a 44-year gamer who plays a bit of everything but my main interest is anything WW2. I've been playing Gary Grigbsy War in the East, Steel Division, Panzer Corp, Hell Let Loose, and pretty much anything related to WW2.
Took me until 2 weeks ago to actually hear about Combat Mission (probably did but never took note). I took the plunge and picked up Battle for Normandy and have already clocked up 120 hours and barely seemed to have scratched the surface.
I am so amazed at how low profile this game is considering how addictive and rewarding it appears. I am already installing mods and now pay little interest in graphics, UI, and presentation. It really takes me back to a golden age when you actually bought a good game, book, or film and indulged yourself in it, and keep going back to it!

umlaut reacted to Phantom Captain in My problem with CMBN  from a consumer perspective and why I didn't buy other CMs...
    1.  The AI for quick battles is a known fault.  QBs are more for PBEM with human opponents.  I have been playing these games since the way back times and I don't think I've played more than 2 or 3 QBs with any engine.  I pretty much only play campaigns against the AI and scenarios PBEM.  I've never felt at a loss for content either.  Which brings me to...
    2.  You're definitely not looking.  I have literally TONS of user made campaigns and scenarios for all the titles.  So many that I don't think I could play all of them in a lifetime.  Quick tip for you, find and download the "All in One" modpack for whatever title you are playing .  The have loads of user made scenarios and campaigns included right there in the modpack.  I feel like just for CMBN there must be over 100 scenarios, at least, and a few campaigns included in the modpack.  It's a must have.

Aye when the tourney is done I'll release it. I suspect I'll make some changes to it (e.g. extend the time!)- it was done really quickly on a premise! I'd be keen on any feedback so if anyone playing has any I'm all ears.

He sent me this when my little border collie died....
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten year old Irish wolfhound, named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa and their little boy Shane were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.
I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog. Ron and Lisa told me that they thought it would be good for the four year old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.
I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few moments, Belker slipped away peacefully. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion.
We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.” Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I had never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, “People are born so that they learn how to live a good life – like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The four year old continued, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

    Sad.
We did a lot of exchanges, along with @Combatintman , @sburkein the late 20teens around our historical Iraq monster city fights (Ramadi / Mosul). I came up with the scenario titles for As'sh Al Dababir (Hornets Nest) and Al Hutumah (the Crusher).  As others here have noted, he was a genius modder and designer.
He LOVED the Ramones, saw them live multiple times.
    From a 2017 PM exchange:
"I'm a huge Ramones fan too, saw 'em live loads of times, mostly at the Hummingbird in Birmingham."
    LongLeftFlank Replied: June 10, 2017
"I saw them only once, but in the Holy of Holies: Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey. Now you can sing "I'm the Crusher" over and over to yourself as you slowly go mad building out the city blocks. Then when the men in white coats come for you they'll assume you're the happy kind.  I am reading Tom Sawyer to my daughter at bedtime, and my wife and I keep singing the guitar hook to the Rush song....

Lol.....I never really got into Rush in a big way (but I loved the cover of 'Fly By Night', painted it on my girlfri end's leather jacket.
Godspeed, old friend!  I'll look forward to catching up with you at the gaming tables at the feasting hall.

Yes sadly I think that's the case.  I found the obituary John mentioned, same name, same home address but I won't link it as it has other family details.  And John and I found other information elsewhere pointing to the same conclusion.  Like John I'm hoping we've got this wrong, and I'd like nothing better than Andy posting to say so.
But if we're right, it's such a shame as Andy was one of the nicest guys on the forum.  Always helpful and generous with his time, not to mention sending me model parts and kits (which I think may have been his major passion, you may have seen photos of his huge collection).  Anyway, I've been missing him for almost a year now and will continue to miss him...
    Hope we're wrong Andy.

umlaut got a reaction from Maddin in Umlaut´s quick-snow mods
    Important update!!

As mentioned above, it turns out that modtagging the vehicles [snow] has a rather unfortunate side effect:
The [snow] modtag somehow overrides the [whitewashed] modtag.
This means that these snowy vehicle mods will replace the [whitewash] vehicles in the games with a date of january 1st 1945 or later. Normally, all vehicles would be whitewashed in snowy ground conditions after this date. But since the [snow] modtag overrides [whitewash] this will not happen for these vehicles.
I am not at all happy about this, as I think the whitewashed vehicles in FB look great. Unfortunately this a game code thing I cant do anything about.
There is a workaround that I have used myself, though. But it takes some time. Here's what I've done:
    1) Go to the data directory in your game and copy these four brz files:
    final blitzkrieg v100c.brz
    final blitzkrieg v100e.brz
    final blitzkrieg v100f.brz
    final blitzkrieg v100g.brz
    2) Put each folder separately into your rezexplode input folder and the explode the file
    3) Use a bulk renaming software (I use Bulk Rename Utility) to rename all files modtagged [whitewash]. The new modtag must be [whitewash snow].
    4) Place these files in you mod folder. Or if you - like me - suffer from lack of hard drive space, repack them with rezpack and let the new files replace the original data brz files (if you do this I strongly suggest that you backup the originals to someplace safe).
This can be done in about 15 minutes.
    Cheers

There has never been tank riders in BN. I think they were introduced in Red Thunder. Perhaps you´re mixing BN up with CMBO (CMx1)?

umlaut got a reaction from Lucky_Strike in A guide to adding extra flavor objects
    Hi
I´ve been making quite a few new flavor objects for CMRT lately. And since I know many other modders and/or scenario designers aren´t aware of the techniques, I´ve made this little how-to guide.

The guide comes in the form of a PDF file. Since it exceeds the max size of attachments allowed in the forum, I´ve put in Dropbox

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/whercbavxakwgyf/Adding%20extra%20flavor%20objects.pdf

None of the methods I decribe are discovered by myself. My knowledge of computer files and how they work is very limited, so I´d never dream of opening and editing a mdr file on my own initiative.
So the credit for experimenting and discovering how to do this belongs to the forumite: Tempestzzzz. I have simply been trying out the methods he has described in several threads in the CMFI forum.
This guide is merely trying to present his discoveries in a bit more structured and accessible manner.

Try it out - it´s not that hard

    - and please comment if there´s anything you don´t understand.

It will take less effort with equipment than Barbarossa, so 1943 will probably be the next iteration in the East.
I'm looking more forward to crap tanks™ in 1941 though.

umlaut reacted to SimpleSimon in Pacific Theater?
I remain unconvinced that a theater of fighting predominantly set by naval objectives and starving island garrisons neutralized and bypassed without a fight will end up being very interesting for very long.
Like the pace of fighting on Pacific Islands was generally one of two states-skirmishes between patrols, and sieges. The terrain and poor local infrastructure left virtually no avenues for the full combined arms kits to be of much use. Tanks were reduced to supporting roles in the few situations roads were the sight of actual fighting. Infantry maneuvers were frequently done with a preference for as little fighting as possible-since the jungles were far worse than the enemy was. It was seriously normal for infantry regiments to be reduced to battalions by malaria *alone*.
One interesting exception to this is a campaign most guys seem oddly oblivious too. Japan's invasion and seizure of the Philippine Islands from the Americans in 1941-42. The fighting on Luzon involved close air support, tactical maneuver, and yes even panzer blitzing but so little is spoken of this campaign since the Americans lost. The fighting also did degenerate into a siege once Bataan came under attack-but there's just enough scope for a short CM style campaign in the early part of the campaign there and maybe also Malaya.
If you want a CM game about the Pacific War you will-unsurprisingly- find few examples. If you want a game about *the way* fighting in the Pacific War happened there are plenty of examples actually. Radio Commander is a good one.
