Ehhh, area fire at obvious superb places to put infantry is ok in my book.
If you put an FO in that church tower that provides great observation to the entire match, don't get upset when I blast the snot out of it as soon as I have a LOS.

Do I understand your problem correctly ? You are wondering why the STUG won´t area fire at a point while being under canon fire, right ?
If Iam: Isn´t this kind of obvious why the Stug don´t want to be hit in the side ?
It is a general TacAi behavior to face the vehicle in the direction of enemy fire or vague enemy tank/anti tank asset - contacts. More so the TacAi can call for a retreat when bigger shots are intercepted by the armor and the crew cannot see the source of it.
And this would make sense as the crew should have some self preservation instinct in them. Staying in there longer the next hits may penetrate the armor or damage important components of the tank.
So the best idea would be to displace to another position as your current one has been compromised.

It certainly seems unlikely at this point that the Chieftain will hold up better against 125mm or 115mm HEAT or APFSDS rounds than the M60. Though maybe once we have it in CM the various unusual angles that it might get shot at from in dynamic combat will show that it's actually more resilient than the youtube simulations suggested (maybe its frontal armor can bounce a 115mm APFSDS round if it comes in from about 30 degrees to the left while the tank is in a hull-down position that is tilting the hull up a bit to put the upper front plate at an even more extreme angle...or something).
In any case, I think one of the first things I'm going to do when we get the module is set up a Chieftain and an M60 on a shooting range and see if I can't find something that the Chieftain is more resilient against than the M60. It sure would be a shame if it turned out that all of that extra armor was nothing but a waste of steel and hp/ton. But based on what I've seen so far, my current guess is that the French and Germans probably had the right idea with their light armor/high mobility designs in the AMX-30 and Leopard 1.

    I doubt it.

Considering that in the assumed timeframe the 3BM21 should be available for all T-62s in the game, I think that the Chieftain will be vulnerable in its frontal arc to 115mm tank guns. Not to speak of the 125mm guns.

Yet the AI will unfailingly deviate from the route you've set to take a quicker way straight through a kill zone.
Copy/paste orders like Tacops had would solve many of these problems.

Against the T64 & 72 Dragon & M60A1s can get kills from the rear or sides. It's just arranging that setup that gives me problems. The Sov, not being completely drink addled, frequently avoid providing flank shots, the buggers.

Just off the top of my head, the Marder and the BMP-1 and -2 also had the ability to dismount their ATGM launchers to use them on foot, as well as the ability of at least some Soviet ATGMs to set their launchers up away from the control units. None of those things are modelled, so I would be (pleasantly) surprised if the Swingfire becomes more advanced than any other mounted ATGM already present in the series.

Actually I heard that they're gonna do a Star Wars, non consequitive titles.
We've got CM1 and CM2, but the next title will be CM Minus 4, starting a series of prequels.
Then they'll drop it entirely for over a decade until Disney picks it up and continues with CM3, CM4 and CM5 all within four to five years.

My hope is North Africa, 1942. They already have the desert assets, there are famous battles, popular generals and noteworthy divisions. It also plays to the engine's strength's (tank warfare.) This could be expanded with the American Op Torch Landings all the way to the fall of Tunis and thus Fortress Italy. It's a perfect fit!
I could also see a Finnish Continuation War Module for CMRT, but that would be A LOT of forest battles. Also, perhaps Battle for France 1940, but I've heard Steve say that early war wasn't viable.
But plz oh plz give us North Africa!

It's a workaround for an engine limitation. Vehicle weapons can't be rearmed within a mission or dismounted.
But certain vehicles, here the Jeep, can dismount their weapons.
For this reason, they have a second TOW launcher with it's own ammunition as their team weapon, while the model of the TOW disappears, when no crew is mounted.
As this is a combat vehicle, only the original crew can mount it.
As the TOW launcher carried by infantry, and the TOW launcher mounted on the vehicle are independent weapons, they can't share their ammunitions.
It also works the other way around. If you dismount and shoot all 3 three missiles, they jeep will still have its original 5 missiles loaded.

But this way, it is possible to simulate the team to dismount with the TOW launcher at least in a similar way, as it would be in real life.

    Hey Guys,
Took a few years, but I'm back to working on CM stuff. Have revamped my Combat Mission Website and over the last few months have populated it with some old (5 Campaigns). some reworked (5 Scenarios of which three are really new), and some new (6 new scenarios).  Also have other things in the works including a 9 scenario campaign for CMFB ' Task Force Baum'  and a 7 scenario campaign for CMCW 'Son of Major Nosov'.
Think the new layout of the website makes it easy to not only get at the scenarios/campaigns but should provide enough description to see if your interested in downloading them or not. Would love to get feedback on any of them you attempt to play. Enjoy, and I am happy to be active again.

My notes for using Sov tactics to beat the Germans/NATO in RT/CW:
Time spent on recon is never wasted.
Time and resources spent killing enemy recon is never wasted.
Have a plan and execute it.
The artillery fire plan supports the maneuver plan. The maneuver plan dictates the fire plan and these must be mutually supportive.
A company of Sov tanks spots better than any single German/NATO tank. If you're fighting a 1:1 tank duel you're doing it wrong.
Take away the better spotting offered by the German/NATO tanker habit of fighting unbuttoned. Get them heads down to decrease their situational awareness.
When you attack, attack! Don't poke him with one finger at a time. Make a fist and crush the enemy with overwhelming force.
Use a platoon to crush a squad > use a company to crush a platoon >> use a battalion to crush a squad. Fair fights are for suckers.
Keep pressing attacks until they aren't feasible anymore, but don't reinforce failure. The Germans/Americans never have enough troops/tanks.
Just because you have mass doesn't mean the only way forwards is a frontal assault. There are other ways to win that don't involve sticking your dick into the meat grinder until it jams. Recon routes that bypass the enemy, the Germans/NATO never have enough troops/tanks to cover every avenue of approach. Infantry infiltration is a thing.
AT if you're playing the Sov:
RT: Your best AT weapon is your tanks. Your infantry doesn't have any good AT weapons outside of close assault. Use your infantry to get spots on enemy tanks and relay that info to the tanks. Don't be afraid to dismount tank crews so they can push forward and get their own spots. On the attack push AT guns forward to support the enemy.
CW: RPGs will knock out a M60 from the front. Your man portable ATGMs (>AT3s) are even more scary. Use infiltration tactics to get the ATGMs forward into range to support attacks. Make sure to protect the carriers since they are stuffed with reloads and make big boom if hit.
Take your time, don't be in a rush to die. You'll probably run out of people, tanks, and/or ammo before you run out of time.

    Urban warfare:
Don't move in the streets. Mouseholing is optimum, then back gardens, then alleyways. Stay out of the streets. Use supporting weapons to create mouseholes and gaps in walls.
Don't go in through the front door. If you can arrange it start at the top and clear down.
Suppress every building that has line of sight to your maneuvering force. If you can't suppress or smoke it don't move that way.

If they release BAOR this year, all else what comes next is secondary to me. If they plan on another WW2 module, eastfront 1943 would seem to be the most logical step, followed by 1943 Tunisia. Big question still is when they update all CM2 releases to engine 5 upgrade. We will learn before the year is over.
