Megalon Jones reacted to MikeyD in So you just got your hands on CMCW...now what? Designers Q&A thread.
About M60A2. It fires the late-generaltion MGM-51C Shilellagh missile with a minimum arming distance somewhere around 740m and a max range of 3000m (I just tested it out). The conventional rounds are low velocity and object to be fired much beyond... I dunno... maybe 1000m?

Good constructive criticism.  I prefer a documentarian style:  long shots at ground level.  You are going to miss certain things (like the sheer amount of lead flying), but I’m willing to sacrifice that for stylistic consistency.  YMMV.

Dang! So, we, Sheridan aficionados, need a module to go back a couple years to see the M551 in line (with the Armored Cavalry). And, for good measure, one should go back to 1976, just to put in the old Soviet heavies (ISU-152, IS-2, IS-3, T-10).
Since a module like this would come up last, I foresee interesting Sheridan vs ISU-152, Leopard 1 vs IS-2M and Chieftain vs T-10M scenarios! 😂

Although back then the 173rd was known as SETAF, for Southern European Task Force.

101st and 82nd were going to the Middle East as part of the RDF/CENTCOM's XVIIIth Corps.  The 173rd Brigade were in Italy as part of AFSOUTH?  If so, they get Yugoslavia and northern Italy.

Megalon Jones reacted to Gkenny in Soviet Cold War era radio communication procedures (question)
For most line units during the soviet era it was pretty much completely numeric IIRC.
It depended on the commander of the higher unit, but the numbers on the side of the vehicles were the callsign for that squad + vehicle (especially because the squad's radio was the vehicle).
One way I've seen it was XYZ, where X was the battalion number, Y the company in the battalion, and Z the squad/vehicle in the company.
So 346 would be 3rd battalion, 4th company, 6th squad/vehicle. Soviet companies were usually 10 strong, with XX0  being the company commander, XX1 through XX3 1st platoon, XX4 through XX6 2nd platoon, XX7 through XX9 third platoon. The 1, 4, and 7 callsigns would be the platoon leaders for their platoons.
Because the vehicles were their main radio source, I believe most units simply stayed and communicated on their respective company net.

    akd,

In my 11+ years as a Soviet Threat Analyst, I never saw the Ivon Ivonovitch (sic) pub. Had no idea such a thing existed and asked retired SFC Army Scout brother George whether he ever had one. He'd never seen one but liked the idea.
The T-62 side view is off, for the turret more nearly resembles the T-55 than the T-62, whose turret is pretty symmetric front and back when viewed from the side. Indeed, it was a point of instant recognition, being referred to as the inverted frying pan. Ivan is clearly talking about the T-62 when mentioning the 115 mm gun. The aiming point chart is a travesty, for the BRDM-2 is labeled BTR-60 and the BTR-60 a BRDM-22! Clearly, this document wasn't properly proofed, if proofed at all, before being sent to press.

Had one of these full size posters in my office. Don't recall the scale, but it was donme in such a way that you could use a dollar bill to measure the items depicted.

and one of these in my desk drawer. Used it many times.

Got one of these from a former RAND nuclear weapon expert. Unfortunately, my Nuclear Effects Weapon Computer No. 2 somehow disappeared after I left military aerospace. It was pretty slick, because it allowed you to determine the effects of weapon A, in delivery mode B, against target C, of hardness D, with a CEP of E, to achieve a given result F. IN practice, it typically took less time to set up and run a given calculation than it did to type this description using two fingers. This manual computer neatly illustrated the value of decreasing CEP, which was the US approach to ICBM and SLBM design, as opposed to the big Soviet warheads and really bad CEP.

    ng cavscout,
Never saw those, but as a kid in elementary school, got to read the USAF maintenance and safety mags via a USAF sergeant in maintenance who lived down the street from us. His daughter was our babysitter a number of times. Through those magazines, I learned about FOD, what sort of damage a screwdriver or flashlight left inside a jet engine could do, the importance of correct lube, PM and more, including the dire consequences of improperly safing or utterly failing to safe ejection seats before working in the cockpit! Had great stark b/w cartoons memorably illustrating what to do and what not to do when it came to taking care of your assigned aircraft.

    Regards,

    John Kettler

Mentioning a 115mm gun on a new tank gives an indication how old this comic is. T64A with 125mm gun began production sometime around 1967, but T64 with 115mm gun had already been in production for a year with some 500 tanks produced. I have a old magazine from 1972 with a very grainy long distance photo of a T64 'mystery tank' with 115mm gun in the snow. The author took a wild guess a 100mm turret front. I don't know how far off that was, composite armor turret front didn't appear til T64A. Does 'FV 76' on the cover mean it was published in 1976? That's an indication on how far behind they were on T64 intel.
