  1. Glad that Ian provided that link. Marco Bergman's UI mods (esp the option that gives range and caliber of weapons) are essential imo and give the UI a much more polished look. Recommend one gets all his versions for the other CM2 games as well. (Wonder what happened to Marco - he is one of the very talented CM2 modders who disappeared.)
  2. For those of us who have been playing CM from the late 1990's, BF has earned a large reservoir of trust re what they are doing. After the fiasco of the initial CMSF release BF dug deep and kept updating CMSF until it became superb. Am confident that, barring catastophe (illness etc), BF will release a terrific new product when it is ready for prime time. BF knows that one only gets one chance to make a good first impression. In terms of keeping us informed of progress, of course that would be nice. But, experience has shown that with programming and AI, it's very hard to predict completion dates. One "small detail" can mushroom into a massive time-consuming issue. Over the years us old-timers have see exactly the same comments from impatient and frustrated gamers over and over (and over) again. I am impatient as well. But, it's preferable that BF spend all their resources working to produce the best possible product than dealing with PR.
  3. Such bittersweet memories. As a kid I couldn't afford to buy miniatures other than an occasional Airfix box of troops. As an adult, about 25 years ago I was at a convention and bought an entire 1944 British Armored Division beautifully painted and mounted on magnetic bases - for maybe $50(!). But what to do with them when we have outstanding computer sims like CM series that do all the hard work of rules lawyering and calculations for us? So, my miniatures sit someplace in storage along with my 1000+ collection of cardboard wargames - most completely new and unplayed. I guess I hope that one day they will be recognized as the handmade, limited edition works of art that they are and become valuable collectibles... Or, I'll have to find a way to donate em and get a tax deduction out of them. It's a bit sad to realize what used to be so precious and valuable to us when we were young, compared to now when one can afford much more.
  4. Always impressive what hobbyists get up to. Same event I think. But with vehicles that have moving crew (7.33), exhaust, firing MG's etc. Maybe we can have future wars with these things instead.
  5. LOL. IIRC Everyone who has bet against Trump winning at what he does has ended up humiliated.
  6. Time will tell. But my money is on Trump and Bolton.
  7. The combination of a crumbling education system and political correctness gone mad. Wasn't it Hitler who said that all the untermensch needed to learn was to count to ten and say "yes" and "no". He woulda been proud at how we are slowly achieving his aims...
  8. I remember Patton's Best - which was fun when there were no sophisticated computer games like CM series available back in those "Dark Ages".
  9. Yes. However, some societies have practiced this on a regular basis, still practice it on a regular basis, and have never evolved. That is what I read in Exsonic's comments. For example I was shocked to read a couple days ago in a Brit newspaper that even though female genital mutilation has been illegal in UK for a long time now... not a single person has ever been convicted of it.
  10. I have never been a patient person. So I empathize... However, I would prefer if Steve didn't spend time on these forums and focused on perfecting the next release. If there was a definitive answer am sure we would have heard it by now.
  11. Yes, I was interested in the comment that "the manual is wrong about that". That is rather important info. So, wondered how it was discovered.
  12. The manual is wrong about that. That is interesting. Just curious: How do you know? Did you experiment or is there revised info someplace?
  13. Am not a fan of night scenarios. Have to turn up the gain on my monitor so it looks like crappy daylight just to see what am doing. However, I enjoyed this particular scenario as it's fun to creep around feeling for the enemy which one encounters at very short range. It's a great scenario as one gets a lot of use out of flamethrowers and satchel charges. So once in a while a night scenario is fun. But, otherwise I agree, they are usually simply frustrating and pointless if one can't see anything without greatly enhanced brightness. I actually need to play this one again as the first time I tested it there was an error that made the mortars useless. (DW has fixed that.)
  14. https://uk.yahoo.com/news/death-queen-elizabeth-most-disruptive-091400348.html interesting speculations. However, when it says that life in Britain will halt for a while, it's possible they ignore that a large % of the pop are immigrants who essentially live in their own "townlets" around the country and also in London and who don't give a toss for the queen/monarchy. So, it's possible that life will go on in many such areas as if nothing's happened.
  15. I loved how they accurately (one assumes) predicted where future urban warfare will occur: "Despite recent success against ISIS, fighting a near-peer enemy in megacities like... Los Angeles... would present greater and more dangerous risks to friendly forces that can only be avoided through innovations in our mission command architecture, our operating philosophies, and our tactics techniques and procedures."
  16. Never be amazed at the stupid things people do or say under the thrall of hubris - as in when one thinks one is unbeatable. Hillary etc.
  17. Very interesting... Eg: "...the Air Force is promoting people who think in terms of one-on-one aircraft engagements. Generals need to be able to think in terms of thousands of people, political-military affairs on a national level, and grand strategy. Yet the current system requires senior officers to guess about future senior leader performance with little information over a decade before officers will assume those positions. The evidence suggests the generals are not guessing well. To make matters worse, the system does not allow for correcting any mistakes after putting an officer on the fast track. Once an officer is designated a high-potential officer, incidents that should end a career become “teachable moments.” Most general officers reject the notion the system is flawed because it promoted them and they have a difficult time believing they can err in judging character. Additionally, if one general officer fires a high-potential officer, others may see it as a challenge to the judgment and reputation of the “sponsoring” general officer. Consequently, generals resurrect the careers of high-potential officer protégés following unfavorable investigations and firings. ...colonels, squadron commanders, and senior noncommissioned officers learned there is no real accountability for high-potential officers." In addition to what is outlined in the article, part of the "problem" is a peacetime military bureaucracy that is no better than any other huge govt agency or corporation. Most senior officers (hopefully) would be swept away in a major war (like "Colonel Blimps") and more competent "warriors" would emerge - as they did in past major conflicts like WW2 etc. The challenges of our current conflicts is that they are not serious enuff to be run as anything more capable than a govt bureaucracy/mil-ind complex profit center (vs a war in which national survival is at stake).
  18. Anyone see "The Death Of Stalin"? Hilarious pythonesque absurdity movie.
  19. If you plan on using many mods, it's recommended you create a folder tree. Eg I have in my Z Mod Folder, Z SOUNDS; Z FX; Z UNIFORMS; Z UI etc.
