Sailor Malan2
I can't speak for Russia (but just wait a few minutes for grog to show) but Brit/CW recce regiments (both Armd and Inf) were specialists. The equipment and skills were different. It was never the aim that recce should fight in a sustained manner (not to say they didn't fight - one counter to ambush units declining to open fire when you suspect they're there is to engage their suspected location; it takes superhuman courage and determination not to open up when fired upon, and anyway it is probably suicide because one day they will have seen you). I am talking about the specialist armd car and light scout vehicle users not just the recce platoon of a line unit or that 2 man 'scout team' you generate from a squad...
Hister
How do you guys use recce units in the game? How would you use them the way they historically were in WW2 CM missions? Asking just so that I learn to play this game better.
womble
How do you guys use recce units in the game? How would you use them the way they historically were in WW2 CM missions? Asking just so that I learn to play this game better. The general answer to this is that you don't use recce units "historically" in the game, since the situations most recce elements find themselves in in most CM occurrences are after the "historical" recce forces have already done their job. There are exceptions, of course: the large maps now practicable might mean that the Armoured Cars and other specialist recce vehicles can do the rushing about which they were designed to accomplish even in a QB; some scenarios might specifically represent historical usages of recon elements. Most of the time, though, IME, the recon units are there either for flavour, or in a "only available force" capacity.

The explanation I had heard previously is that the role of recon is such that it would normally make an absolutely boring scenario. 4 hours of watching to see if you see anything and then you would just report it. In other words a game of mostly sitting still with spotting objectives.

Then withdrawing the recce and actually fighting the scenario.
A Canadian Cat
Just completed a fun time playing Studienka. I have not seen the final screen so I don't know the final disposition of the score but I stopped the Russian attack! My opponent wants me to post screen shots of one troublesome Panther. In particular was displeased the it kept on firing when he had hoped its weapon was disabled. I had trouble finding the right one since there are several in need to new paint. I count 20 hits on the front of this guy. He and his platoon spent the game on over watch on the top of a hill. I lost a lot of tanks there but they KO'ed even more. Excellent long range duel. This is the one he was talking about: note the hole right next to the weapon mount. Lucky crew. He kept on firing. He started out on the same hill as the Panther above but he and two of his mates relocated when it became evident that the PzIVs could not handle the other prong of the attack. So most of these hits came from when he was in the same hill top location as the above Panther. Loads of fun.
BLSTK
The stuff of legend, Ian. There's only so much "Bondo" for so much body work.
A Canadian Cat
Now that I have seen the final screen - a draw BTW - here is a couple more pictures. This is the view from the hill. Well actually this is the view from about half way between the hill and these poor wrecked tanks. There is very strong haze in this scenario so this view looks crappy from the actual location my Panthers dealt this carnage from. One tank racked up eight kills in that area shown above. His mates mostly had only one each except for one other that had four.

Reiter
Hi all, I am the new meat in town, played for cm games over a decade.
Baneman
Nice pics Reiter, very evocative. Advice for the future, it looks better to crop away the bottom part of the screen GUI and turning off icons also helps. But still good pics
Reiter
Thanks Baneman, Noticed myself just now that in the middle pic, there is mangled guy under the tank, or looks like it.

MOS:96B2P
how do you post pictures again More than one way to do it. Below is my way. I use free versions of FRAPS and photobucket. Shift / esc pauses the game without the word PAUSED across the screen Alt / I toggles off unit icons Alt / h toggles off hit text Alt / j toggles off objectives Capture a screen shot with FRAPS Open with Paint Crop it to get rid of the UI at the bottom Save as a jpeg Sign in to photobucket Click on the upload button Drag the photo into photo bucket area that says “Drag here” Click on IMG tag to the right of the photo Then right click the photo and copy image Go to the forum Paste the photo into the narrative box The URL will appear Preview it and the photo will appear (Click go advanced)

sburke
no wonder I don't post pics It is actually really simple. I posted a god awful amount in the CMSF forum and it really didn't take me long. Actually the most time consuming part is finding that shot you really want. The description above is nicely detailed but some steps are actually simpler. For example in photobucket when I click the img tag it automatically copies, I just then paste to where ever I want. I also use Picassa and have a shortcut in a CM folder (I keep all the game launchers and any associated programs in there like cmh, fraps, a link to my crash dump folder etc etc). So I hit the shortcut to the fraps screenshot folder, click the image and picassa opens with a button that says edit in picassa. I crop, save as JPEG and edit the next pic. Once I have them all done I do a bulk copy to photobucket. Doing 50 pics is not much harder than doing 10. So c'mon folks post your pics. If you can't do that you probably have no business playing a computer game.
Hister
It's not super fast but you can have a pic posted here in no time after you get the grip. Childs play really.
MOS:96B2P
in photobucket when I click the img tag it automatically copies, I just then paste to where ever I want. Thanks sburke. Don't know how I picked up that extra step of copying the image twice. I removed that bad habit from my list for future screen shots.
