ChrisND
There will be no unconventional forces for base game, and definitely no attempt to simulate the current fighting in eastern Ukraine. The setting of the game is a fictional military conflict between NATO, Ukraine, and Russia in 2017, not a simulation of the current Kiev vs Separatist conflict. That was our plan from the very beginning, before all of these real-life events even started, and that's what we are sticking with. Granted, in such a setting unconventional fighters would still be a factor to some extent, but for the base game release we've already got our hands full as it is with the military of three different countries.
purpheart23
and on that note Chris, i"m going to go ahead and need Battlefront to announce the game and set up preorders before I have to leave for one off our lovely National Training Centers here shortly. My thanks in advance
Kieme(ITA)
So there won't be irregulars in the base game, fair- but I hope they will be added in one of the modules. The game will be very different from CMSF and not just because of the setting. Besides, if anybody wants some asymmetric fighting, US operations against ISIS have just begun and a campaign about that could be made out of scratch with the good assets of old CMSF.
Buzz
"The back story posted in this thread is a very old version that was written before the protests and change in government even started. It has been continually revised since then, including taking into account recent events such as Crimea." grunt_GI
So, now that the 3.0 upgrade is mostly done...any new bones for CMBS? Anything??? Movies, screen shots. TO&E? Please?
ChrisND
So, now that the 3.0 upgrade is mostly done...any new bones for CMBS? Anything??? There will be Russians in it. Movies, screen shots. TO&E? Please? Not ready for any movies or screenshots, but here's a little TO&E bone: in addition to the standard maneuver battalions, we'll be included some generic Task Forces for the US and Battalion Tactical Groups for Russia and Ukraine. For all of them (Task Forces + BTGs), this means the addition of engineer platoons, MANPADS platoons, and artillery batteries (offmap!) to the battalion. For the mech infantry battalions it also means that tanks and infantry get mixed in at the company level. For example, the US Combined Arms Task Force has four company teams: Two of them are rifle heavy company teams, with x2 Bradley infantry platoons and x1 Abrams tank platoon. Two of them are armor heavy company teams, with x2 Abrams tank platoons and x1 Bradley infantry platoon. The Russian and Ukrainian BTGs add platoons of tank to each of the motor rifle companies. So for example a BMP company tactical group would be: Company HQ x1 Sniper Section x3 Rifle Platoon (BMPs) x1 Tank Platoon (x3 tanks) And vice versa for tactical groups from tank battalions. Why does this matter?! Because now the tanks (or infantry) report through the same C2 chain and to the same commander, instead of answering to another off-map HQ unit. That has implications for morale, sharing of spotting info, access to organic fire support, and anything else related to command and control. And it also makes the TO&E look neater when you can purchase one formation and get most of the stuff you need.
ChrisND
Ah, here's another bone, just for the heck of it. It's just a teeny one though. Anyone remember hating how night vision goggles didn't show up in CMSF? Not a problem anymore. For Black Sea the troops that are equipped with NVG will visually wear NVG if visibility is low enough.

TF and BTG make things potentially much more interesting. Especially if you can purchase them for QB. Ok, little bone, but will take it.
Sakai007
I am so ready for this game. Been playing CMSF again to keep me sedated, but it's not quite scratching that itch. I know it'll be worth the wait, but it's tough none the less.

Both bones are cool! To some people that NVG addition might not be that impressive, but it's these seemingly little things that get added into CM that really make the game shine. I am looking forward to Black Sea, very much. And every time you guys mention something new I keep slobbering thinking about how kickass it will be if it's added to CMSF when it's upgraded. I for one, certainly look forward to the eventual upgrade of CMSF...seems like what's old is new again, if you read the news these days....maybe instead of US vs Syria, we'll have new scenarios of US vs ISIS....think of it...Styrkers versus waves of technicals and uparmored Hummers.

Erwin
"we'll have new scenarios of US vs ISIS....think of it...Styrkers versus waves of technicals and uparmored Hummers." This could be done with the existing CMSF. There exist xnt mods for uncon/mujahideen and red forces that would work very well. (See Mord's for example.)
Stagler
Mighty developers, please, please, allow us to tweak the dates and weather of the missions in the editor in more detail. In CMSF we only had three months, and three weather settings to play with. In CMA, we had years and months, but only a few weather settings to play with. (There is no rain in Afghanistan apparently:rolleyes:). I would like to see Snow, Rain, Fog, Mist, etc. - The same technology seen in CMFI to allow for different seasons. Please, let us have lots of options for weather and time, they are what adds different character to battles and some times drastically changes the dynamics of combat. It may not be in the scope of the ingame campaign, but it allows editors the freedom to create their own campaigns outside of the timeline. For example if/when a module with insurgents comes out, one could create a campaign set in Grozny in the winter of 2000, or the same Crimean conflict set at a different time of year. Cheers.
John Kettler
While we wait, here is quite an interview with a Ukrainian National Guard soldier. He was in the Ukraine Crisis from very early on and fought in the very bloody ATO (Anti Terrorist Operation). His account is revelatory and harrowing. I find his comment on who has the materiel and ration he and his men desperately need to be particularly apt. Even has something positive to say about MREs! http://slavyangrad.org/2014/08/10/national-guard-soldier-kiev-lies/ Would also note that I've written a stack of posts on my site which provide in-depth coverage of aspects of the Ukraine Crisis. Several detail to what really happened to Flight 17, how and from where. Expect more shortly. Real nitty gritty stuff.
