CMRT release incredibly fast? CMMG toast?

Recommended Posts

No, I wasn't imagining it. CMMG came out on October 11, 2013, and CMRT's due out soon. Seems to me as though we went, in a flash, from the MG AARs there to here, with not a whole lot of posts otherwise re MG. It seems that MG's effectively become eclipsed, practically as soon as it got here, blown out of the water practically as soon as it was launched. Or am I confused and somehow missed losts of MG commentary following release?

Regards,

John Kettler

Has the Bulge "downgrade" from "Family" to "Module" been confirmed somewhere?

I think not? Oddball is likely talking about a "pack" for CMBN.

Regarding MG being eclipsed by CMRT.. at the moment (I would say) thats true. RT is a whole new base game with a new front so its no surprise it attracts a lot of attention (not to speak of the big new features brought in).

In time CMBN will be able to upgrade to 3.0 and Im sure this front will keep a big interest overall. Not to menation when CM Bulge is released.

MG can also be used to cover the battles in Lorraine and the very early Siegfried Line battles (eg Stolburg) thugh we could use another expansion to cover the autumn fighting.

As far as the Bulge is dconcerned I think it makes far more sense to publish it as a module expansion to Normandy following on from a Siegfried Line module. After that you can do a modul covering the Rhineland/Rhrine crossing batles and then the final push accross Germany. The Battle for Rethem

against the Grman 2nd Marine Division is an example of the kind of action that could be gamed during the final stages of the war in NW Europe.

However, my favourite front has always been the Russian Front despite its often contrversial nature. I look forward to the imminent publication of RT.

Fortunately, the CMx2 expansion and release model means that nobody has to be "toast."

CMBN and CMFI will be updated to the standards of CMRT in due time. We'll be playing all the theaters of the war simultaneously. Unlike CMx1, we don't have to give up the Western Front because we don't want to lose the great new features that came with the East.

I'm excited to finally get to the EF, been waiting since cmsf to get here. I'm curious about the viability of bulge as a full priced standalone. Makes more sense to make that a module for cmbn. You can already play bulge as a mod for cmfi GL, so I won't be getting it, I'm burnt on the bulge. BF will have to introduce some serious new features to get me to purchase a bulge game.

I love Bulge games and have been eagerly waiting for CM: BULGE or whatever from BF. However, when I really think about the Bulge games I have loved, they were more operational in nature. Companies and battalions.

When you get right down to the sort of small unit tactical nature of CM2, one winter, snowy woods terrain map will be like any other. It really won't matter whether it's in Italy or the Ardennes or the Swiss Alps. If the Bulge game has to be sold on its name and location alone (as opposed to a bunch of new unit types and features) I find myself agreeing with you that there may be little point in buying it for many people. (I would buy it anyway to support BF.)

From a marketting perspective alone, CM:Bulge must be released as a new stand-alone game. "The Battle of the Bulge" is too well known by the average American to not leverage the marketting plan for a new game off of it. Forcing a new customer to buy something labelled as "Normandy" when they want "The Battle of the Bulge" doesn't make sense and would be confusing to said new customer.

not me, the Bulge family is the one I am waiting for. Modding it using CMFI just doesn't do it. I want Ardennes building etc. Just look at the changes BF wrought on trees for CM:RT. Who knows what else they will have up their sleeves by then. :D

Well, yes, if BF create a bunch of good new features and/or useful upgrades then of course that makes any new module worth buying.

I think what tdogg originally meant, is that just having a snow and ice version of CMBN or CMFI may not be worth it to some folks.

Understood. What surprises me is the things I find I am not expecting. I was fully prepared to buy CMFI and be kind of ho hum about the theater. However what I have found instead is I think CMFI makes the best dense urban maps of any of the WW 2 variants so far including RT. Outside of PBEM and testing, CMFI is the game I gravitate to. Not at all what I thought before hand.

CMFI is alot more even equipment wise than most of the others and Italy makes for hard fought battles.

As for RT, its going to have a great appeal simply for the reason its the eastern front and you have those large map areas to skulk around in.

I'm looking forward to all of Battlefronts releases, if they come out every couple of months I will be more than happy.

Agreed. The Battle of the Bulge is a title that will sell itself. Always has. The Bulge alongside Gettysburg, D-Day, and Waterloo have been the subject of countless wargames because they sell. Those are usually the first titles a fledgling wargame company ushers out the door in order to quickly grab customers.

I know it drives Ost Front, MTO, PTO, and early war fans up a wall, but it's a fact of our hobby that games based on the Bulge will almost always sell more than games based on other titanic battles such as El Alamein, Stalingrad, Kursk, Casino, or Berlin.

Saving the Bugle for a latter release is unique marketing approach by BF. My guess it's their attempt to defeat the law of diminishing returns by hopefully injecting new sales life into what will then probably be CM 4.0 or 5.0 by appealing to casual PC gamers who couldn't give a fig about Commies fighting Nazis, but watched "Band of Brothers" and want to vicariously experience Bastogne.
