FWIW CMCW runs fine in the virtual machine software Parallels for me.

So, if I didn't save manually, game is lost. Server just transmits current file, without saving previous. But why to delete local files? For disk space? I would better delete them manually.
I like auto PBEM system, but risking long game doesn't worth it...

As womble said, if you fire on-map indirect it isn't that precise anymore. The fall pattern is different IIRC, the oval oriented differently or something.
In CMCW you get 120mm mortars for direct fire. They mosh.
The fact that they can fire that quickly in direct fire is probably not realistic.

Bogged vehicles have a dice roll whether they become operational or go to immobilized, which is permanent.
I assume bogged vehicles make it to the next battle but I never encountered it.

This is actually a typo in the manual. The T-64B and B1 are firing BM22, just like T-72A (1980) and T-80B.

External help would be available if maps could be im- and exported via XML or whatever. It is not difficult data to model. Just a known number of tiles with a known set of possible attributes.
Even doing this just for the height of the tiles would be an improvement.

Redwolf reacted to DougPhresh in Cancel ongoing artillery mission when the FO i KO
I came here to post this. I was Arty Signals both in FOO and STA. There would be absolutely no way to know if anything had happened to the FOO as Artillery Communications (Fire Discipline) follows a procedure, a script. The procedure is designed, as @Ultradave said, so that data is fed to the CP, developed into firing data and given to the guns. Without "Check Fire", that procedure is not getting interrupted.
Add to that that in WW2, and often times even today, other arms aren't on the Artillery net. There's no link between say an infantry company and the firing battery, and you're looking at no way to Check fire without the information getting passed up, over and then back down. When we're talking about a time when radios could be few and far between, and relying on telephone links, there's no way to quickly change missions like that.
This, of course, is why pre-planned fires were (and are) central to the Commonwealth way of war. The infantry is briefed on the fireplan, and guns assigned to it have a card that tells the 1IC (gun commander) the data for every single round his gun will fire - sometimes for the next few hours. This means that whatever happens on the sharp end, rounds still fall where they are supposed to reliably. It's not as fluid or dynamic as on-call fires, but it works. There's a nifty explanation putting it into gameplay terms Here. A Fantastic Website Here, and the two books we use to teach at CTC Artillery School Here and Here if you want to go deep.

I'm not saying all fire planning all the time, but for players commanding Commonwealth troops in BN and FI, and Brits and Canadians in SF2, this is the real solution to delivering reliable fires regardless of contact with the observer. As a rule: Medium guns fire pre-planned, some Field guns do, but some are kept available on-call, and mortars of course, are the Infantry's Artillery, are are most flexible to employ.

I hope I didn't get too bogged down with detail there, but I really enjoy discussing the tools of the trade.

It's 1525h on August 18th, in some village near the river Dives, just northwest of Falaise. Further to the south, Canadians (and the Polish) are launching a decisive effort across the "neck" of an emerging pocket, fighting equally ferocious actions on the hills overlooking the river valley as they are in the small towns that dot the valley floor itself.
It's clear to everyone, even if no one is acting like it: Jerry is finished in Normandy. Word has now come from on high that our division is to 'get ahead of the game' and begin pushing to the river Seine. This will mean smashing into German units fighting to hold open the escape route as they latterly also try to expand it.
So the battlegroup conducts a hurried O group in a tiny cluster of command vehicles...

Whilst throughout the village, in laager, the squadrons resupply even as the COs conduct their troop level o groups. In two hours' time the whole lot will be moving forward to join units already in contact with the enemy for a late-afternoon effort.

I've been inspired by MMM and Bud's own DARs to begin one of my own, and in any event, it's been a long while since I've done one, having mainly dedicated AAR efforts to single player.
My opponent, James (goes by the handle Draper) is an old buddy of mine and I filmed a few of our slapfight PBEMs wayyyyy back in the day when we were both teenagers and had no idea what the hell we were doing. We've played steadily ever since and know one another quite well, so I figured this would make for a particularly interesting DAR. We've had a handful of medium matches against one another recently, mainly infantry-centric affairs, and both wanted to open up with winter break providing us with more time. Draper's a teacher and I currently run a pro-bono advice centre at a University in the UK, so we have the luxury of being beholden to student's schedules.
The scenario we're playing is "forging steel", a side-swapped variant of GeorgeMC's "Schmiedestahl" my little group has had bouncing around for a bit. I am playing as the British attackers, and it will be interesting to see how the tactics I use will naturally have to differ from the default German-attacking scenario.
For the time being here's a look at the map and objectives.

    The Seventy-Third Minute
    The Right
It's been a while since we've seen 3 Kompanie. 2 Gruppe move out in their SPW to go scout the route mentioned last time through the scrub.

    Objective ROT

    Before:

    SBF
2 Gruppe make it safely back to the buildings.

The next incoming round goes over their heads and lands on the front hull of Tiger 1 lightly wounding the commander and causing slight damage to the nahverteidigungswaffe, radio, optics and tracks. The commander immediately buttons the panzer but the crew are not rattled. This Tiger will be moving out next turn to join T2 at the objective.

    2 Zug
The lone gunner left in 2 Gruppe of 2 Zug is now my designated bullet magn....err I mean brave scout. He dashes across the street to C1.

He makes it unscathed and finds yet another pile of Soviet casualties in C1.

    1 Zug
The HQ Tiger moves into the street between sectors A and B to provide close support.

1 Gruppe continue to fire on the infantry behind D1 and the final guy standing makes a dash for it.

    He's gunned down.

2 Gruppe move across from B1 to B2.

Once there they get a nasty surprise. A 61-K 37mm AA gun is sitting in the field behind the objective. The Gruppe start firing on it and suppress it momentarily...

But it soon recovers and turns...and aims...
just as the turn ends! Dun dun du!

The current dispositions. I have quite a few enemy infantry squads marked as destroyed now but in truth I think they were mostly teams and not full squads. I may update the graphic should I get a chance but likely won't.
Either way I think I've spotted at least 5 HQ units which would fit with the Cavalry Squadron template: 4 platoons and 1 Squadron HQ. But I would expect to see a MG HQ and an AT HQ unit too. They may still be out there, or could have retreated as I have no eyes beyond the objective to the East, or I could be way off.

    SITMAP

The infantry on the SBF position are going to get into cover next turn as I'm pretty sure now he's trying to bombard their positions. Not sure where his spotter could be located. Interesting.
On the right I'm excited to see what shakes out as everything has been very quiet over there, 2 Gruppe are going to drive to the scrub and then get out and advance on foot. Hopefully I'll get some spots or sound contacts.
On the left nothing happened again.
