I am at a Delima. Stick to Normandy Bench with all it's module's or something more modern.

First I must tell you I will probably stick with the modules of CBNB because to me WWII was the great one not WWI but could be convinced because lord knows I would like to pit modern US forces against a modern enemy.  Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Black Sea is good, the Russia campaign Crossing the Dnieper is really good. Where it's lacking is the lack of a good introduction to Russian doctrine, so a lot of people simply use them as a worse version of the US.

Cold War has the most amount of content in a base game out of the box, however some people complain that the scenarios are "too big". It gives a great introduction into how the US and Soviets are meant to be used, and due to this you can appreciate the Black Sea Russians a lot more.

Biggest issue with CW (and BS) is that most of the QB maps are pretty poor, especially considering how good the campaign maps are particularly in CWs case.

At the end of the day though, the best CM game for a person is the one that has the time period or theatre that they are most interested in.

lcm1947,

I started with WWII back in the ole days of CMBO and CMBB.  Now though, I pretty much only play modern and find it very difficult going back to anything pre CW.  To me, modern is so much better, faster, deadlier and more fun than WWII that there is no comparison in my mind.  Be warned!  It can hook you bad.  Shock Force is really a great intro and I love it.  But Black Sea and Cold War are really where it's at, imho of course.  I'm literally dying for a BS module about now.

Cold War is SO GOOD it's ridiculous.

And we are just getting warmed up.

Seriously, it is all good.  Play them all.  WW2 has that deep historic roots and the birth of all arms while the modern titles are a spectrum of heightening lethality, range and pace.  And then CMSF is one of the truly hybrid warfare simulators on the market.

CMCW will offer you the most content and the best experience overall. It has the best performance of all the games, has vehicles that span ~20 years of development, and has a lot of maps.

I dont even consider CMSF2 because of its abysmal performance. CMBS is good, but needs a module already!!! :P

CMCW also accepts converted maps from every single title. Including CMBN. So you can have near endless enjoyment from CMCW.

How do you feel like modern russian doctrine differs from the US? For example, the first mission of the Russian campaign. How would they approach things differently?

That's a good question, one I would honestly like to hear a summary answer for.  Is it just blast everything with artillery, attack at many spots, push your 2nd wave through the area that gave the least amount of resistance. That's what I imagine, but I'm probably totally off.

CMSF2 is a very nice option imo...It is fairly 'modern' and not purely....when spotted you're dead...as CMBS tend to be...

Buying the CMSF2 bundle... combined with comunity scenarios, campaigns and mods will give you endless of stuff to playaround with....

That would be my pick ! 😊

Oh no you guys have made it even harder to decide.  😏  Just kidding thanks for the replies.  It is actually a tough call and I'll have to dwell on it but at least I have a

better understanding of all the games than I had thanks to you.  I hope to get more replies before I bite the bullet but right this second, I'm thinking about going with

CBFB.  I am anxious to see what and how the two counties improved their equipment especially in regard to their armor.  Feel free to express your opinions and thoughts and

regardless of what I decide rest assured I will be here playing one of these truly magnificent realistic games.  Pretty exciting just even contemplating which to go with.

One piece of advice that gets mentioned often, not just by me, is to choose the period and theatre that most interest you and you'll be guaranteed to enjoy. Personally for WW2 I like BN and FB, however, FI with it's 2 modules and RT with the FR module offer lots of content too. For modern I like CW hands down. Great content, but partly it's because of 10 years as an Army officer in that era so it's what I trained for for years. Interesting to play it out. Although while in the 82d our mission was a bit different than armored combat in the Fulda Gap, and many times we were occupied with [waves hands] "other things"

lcm...

Just a quick note...If you are looking for 'different' then perhaps CMFB will give you the least of that compared to other games if you already own CMBN with all the modules.

CMBN and CMFB are fairly simular when it comes to equipment...But as Ultradave  mentined...If the Bulge is of great intrest to you then by all means go ahead and get it...

If 'different' compared to CMBN is of higher priority then i say go for the CMFI bundle or CMRT as far as WW2 goes...

CMFI will give you mid 1943 to end of the war and a new country (Italians) to play with....CMRT with the latest module will give you mid 44 to end of war and a new country (russians)

But...offcourse...It's your choise 😊

CMSF being the "oldest" product (2007 release) that has had the most updates and upgrades to CMSF2 is the most mature ('debugged") game and the most "complete".  If you start a lengthy campaign and invest dozens (or hundreds) of hours into playing, you won't have to worry about an upgrade being released that changes the game and you having to start from Mission 1 again.  If you like desert and sun, you can't beat CMSF.

In addition, if you are interested in the "look" and "sound" of CM, CMSF has by far the largest selection of mods that greatly improve the look (and even sound) of the game.  That's probably followed by CMBN.  However, many of the WW2 mods can be used by all the WW2 releases.

I'd agree CM:SF2 is by far the most comprehensive of the modern titles (especially if you buy the big bundle), however I wouldn't agree that it's the best de-bugged.

Red C2 is still a mess and the Uncons could use some major re-working (C2 issues again and a severe lack of Specialist Units & Single Vehicles)..

That being said, it really wouldn't take very much to sort it out.....I live in hope.  ;)

I put off getting the modern games for a while, since I am a WW2 guy -- though I am also a cold war guy from back in the day.  All I can say is that you are missing out on a ton of fun.  The modern stuff is so different from WW2, such a different kind of challenge.  Just get one of the three modern games and you'll see.

I share this experience...I didn't think i would like the more modern stuff...But i do 😊

WW2 is still my favorit though...A few reasons for this...

- CMSF2...I like it but it would be even better if it could be brought up to current day also...

- CMBS...Nice game but the setting really does not do it for me...realistic and current as it might be.

- CMCW...I have fairly limited experience with this as of yet but my initial feeling is that it needs some expansions to get some more variaty into the game...

If we where to get things like current day Iran Vs Western, Current day Korea or current day China Vs Western then the fully modern stuff might very well become my favorit games...😎

CMSF2 does indeed have endless user made content. Like 10x what the game originally came with. It probably has the most user made content of all the games. (I spent hours one day downloading everything off the mod websites for every game). These user made scenarios are excellent. Though smaller in scale than other titles.

My CMSF2 wont be able to handle a full marine expeditionary unit without getting so sluggish that I can't even alt tab from the game. Which is really sad because I find them to be the most fun and interesting formations of all the modern titles.

CMFB is as Glubokii Boy said... very similar to CMBN. You get some Jumbos, some jagdtigers, and some other niche goodies. Overall the TOE and available vehicles is probably the most in CM. With exception to CMBN+ the modules.

HOWEVER the CMFB maps are probably the best in the CM series. They are hilly and diverse in terrain. Quite a few maps to play around in. Personally this is among my least played titles overall.

I do disagree with Glubokii Boy that CMCW lacks diversity. IMO It's probably the most diverse base title with an exception to CMFB. The Soviets and Americans have access to a couple generations of troops which leads to pretty interesting matchups.

China v Western should absolutely be the next CM. That would be so sick.
