Wintergewitter in Garfagnana, 26 and 27 December 1944

This is a historical / semi-historical battle series nearly three years in the making that includes 6 scenarios aiming to reproduce some of the events that took place along the Gothic Line in the Serchio valley, northern Apennines, on 26 and 27 December 1944, known as Battle of Garfagnana and referred to by the Germans as Unternehmen Wintergewitter, Operation Winter Storm.

    All modules needed.

This is not a campaign in the true sense. You will proceed to the next battle regardless of your performance, but your core force will still suffer losses as it progresses through the operation.

The six battles in order of appearance are:

    1. Sommocolonia

    2. Bebbio

    3. Vergemoli

    4. Brucciano

    5. Ponte di Calavorno

    6. Fornaci di Barga

    IMPORTANT NOTE:

A huge thank you to @kohlenklau and @boygarvin. This battle series MUST be used in conjunction with their mods “Partizani-Buffalo-Alpini” (tagged), included in the zipped file.

The three mods used together change German Panzergrenadiers to Alpini, French free troops to Italian Partisans and regular US white-only troops to segregated black troops (the Buffalo Soldiers). If you don’t use them you will have French soldiers standing in for Italian partisans, and that’s a huge no-no in my world!

    Any comments appreciated. Enjoy!

Dedicated to the memory of my grandfather Euclide Magnanini, who chose the right side, last one on the right portrayed here with some of his partisan pals (well okay, and to my great-uncle Giuseppe, zio Pino, too, who chose the wrong one, not portrayed here).

Personally I would love to see another RT module covering the same time frame, with the minor Axis nations: Hungary, Romania, Finland, maybe throw Bulgaria in as well.

    I agree.
Ideally CMRT would be expanded to cover the whole time frame but I'm not sure we'll get all (or any) of the missing years.  I know there's some good stuff coming for RT but not early stuff.  @kohlenklau was making a brave and skilled attempt at modding some of this but I think he's had to take a gardening break from the strain.  Come back soon Phil...

Hi all, This is a mod that replaces the textures of the "Military Volkssturm" with textures that EZ made, all credit goes to him.

Some people don't appreciate that nice graphics is not the dealbreaker for the members of this forum. Otherwise, we would all play Call of Duty. The oldest wargame is chess mor than a thousand years old and still going strong. I see Combat Mission in the same light, possible by modern high tech.

    WeGo or NoGo...
One of the primary USPs for me is the 1 minute turn and infinite replays of the turn results. If it doesn't have that, it's not a competitor to CM, in my lexicon.

Believe me, I’m just as eager. The West Germans would be great, so would the East Germans for that matter.

I hope this performance improvement mean that all games will be able to have maps larger than 18 square kilometers being made in the editor and played on as scenarios.
Larger maps for scenarios would be better for the modern day games but would also be great for the WW2 ones.
I know that a lot of people don't like scenarios larger than platoon size but there are also those, I included, that would like to be able to play scenarios that are able to have a whole regiment on the map from the start without performance issues. Unfortunately the map size requirements don't allow for that to happen at the moment.

Never saw this 1977 gem in my entire career as a Soviet Threat Analyst, a career which began in 1978. Not only does this show the ins and outs of the T-62 and how it operates with BMP-1s and AT-3 armed BRDMs, but it shows US capabilities, too, including the hulldown disparity, telltale reload indicator, low T-62 ROF and more. On the US end, everything from tanks to tacair and scatterable mines (by automatic minelayer or helicopter dispenser) are all there to see. Nor is the terrain the sere NTC, but someplace very European looking. Not only is there lots of great footage, but some remarkable model work, too. Of particular intetest to players will be the comments on open fire ranges, engagememt philoposophies, ammo selection and other game useful groggery.

Offhand, I can't think of a better intro to the real world which CMCW seeks to depict.

We do indeed have a road map... sorry but we can't share our plans yet beyond what Steve has hinted at.  If you can be a little more patient I think you will be pleased when we can make an announcement.

Having lived in England I was surprised by the wide variety of accents there are in that "small island"  (Bill Bryson reference). We lived in the far northwest and there is a distinct accent in Cumbria. And across the way the Geordie accents of Newcastle. At work one of the admins asked the British engineer that I worked with "I can tell you are from Newcastle, but I can't quite place whether it's north or south of the river" [Tyne]  I thought, boy that's really localized accents.
And then there were the engineers from Scotland working there, and one of them made it a point to speak slowly so the rest of us could understand him. And not just the Americans either - the British needed him to slow down too.
At lunches we had spirited fun conversations about language, pronunciations. All in good fun. It was a great experience. So different living there as opposed to just touristy visiting (which I had done before that).
