That's a strange question. One assumes that one wants the very best graphics on the monitor one is using. Multiple monitors can help with some high end flight sims etc. But, not sure what the is advantage of playing CM on two monitors. FWIW I ended up getting an HP Z27n G2 27-Inch Display (2560x1440) I based my decision on factors like pixel pitch, consumer reviews (from a couple of sources) re reliability and color, warranty, and finally price. My travel laptop has a GTX 980M vidcard which should be able to handle 4K UHD easily. But, I thought that 4K was overkill for a 27" monitor and for CM and the other apps I run. And I am a bit suspicious that 4K monitors seem relatively cheap compared to even 1920x1200. So, I wonder about the quality of most of the current crop of 4K monitors.

The question is whether there is any effect of wearing NVG in daylight if the troops start off with them on at night. Does the game calculate as if the goggles are removed in daylight (even tho' the graphics show goggles). Am assuming it does since there are no reports of weird vision/spotting issues.

Russian Artillery - long time to arrive
Erwin replied to JulianJ's topic in Combat Mission Black Sea
You gave a good description of standard Russian/Red tactics when one is in the "main effort" and there is mass artillery in support. Am asking if the tactics change when one is "operating outside the main body" and has much less, if any, arty available (as is the case with most, perhaps all, CM2 scenarios). In such a situation it would seem that the "bulldozer" Red tactics would not work without mass artillery. So, are there different Red tactics when one is not the main effort and so one has little or no arty support? Would that be similar to the tactics used by western forces? -
It's a good question. When the sun rises, does the game treat the troops as if they now have removed the NVG goggles and have normal vision? Have very rarely played a scenario featuring troops with NVG's that starts in dark and ends in daylight.

Patches for the 4.0 Upgrades are now available
Erwin replied to BFCElvis's topic in Combat Mission - General Discussion
Does the large "all in one game install" that new purchasers can buy now include this latest patch? If not, when will that be included so that one only needs to d/l one file per game to be immediately up to date? -
"Quick - This is a good default move for when contact is made. They'll usually try to complete the move before firing, but they will fire on a target sometimes." Unless this has been changed in patches, have found that units moving QUICK will return fire quite often. (I think it's if they have good sight of an enemy.) Have several times seen an AT team moving QUICK, see an enemy tank well within range, stop, shoot and kill it, and then continue QUICK to original destination waypoint. Lovely to watch.

Russian Artillery - long time to arrive
Erwin replied to JulianJ's topic in Combat Mission Black Sea
Makes sense. However, in these instances, since there is "very little artillery support (relatively speaking)" available, then presumably the Red forces would have to adopt different tactics than the one discussed in this thread which describes the mass use of arty. What would Red forces tactics be when there is little artillery available? Would that be similar to Western tactics or...? Am interested in what are optimal Red tactics in CM2 since very few (if any) CM2 scenarios in which one plays Red feature mass artillery. -
Good stuff. Thanks...

Anyone have Kieme's Modular Buildings Add On Pack
Erwin replied to bweiß's topic in CM Red Thunder Maps and Mods
I have Kieme_s_Modular_Buildings_Add_On_Pack in my Z folder. Have sent all the mods I have to Bootie for CMMODS IV - so you should be able to get it soon. -
Russian Artillery - long time to arrive
Erwin replied to JulianJ's topic in Combat Mission Black Sea
Have been out of touch for a while and just got back and found this thread very useful and interesting. Thanks guys. Keep it up! Question: Does the above imply that designers should ensure that the Red forces have enuff artillery so it can emulate the pre-planned bombardment tactics described? It often feels that the Red forces in CM2 scenarios have inadequate artillery to conduct such fires in sufficient mass - and that is when we players start to try and use Red artillery as if we were playing with western Blue forces. -
Have to be in UK for a while, so setting up new office. Need to get new monitor. Consumer Reports recommends either Dell U2713H (27" 2560x1440) or Asus PQ 321Q (31.5" 3840x2160"). Anyone using one of these or recommending something else? Also, since UK TV's are higher resolution than most (non-4K) US TV's am wondering if simply using a 30"+ TV would work as a monitor giving resolution equivalent to the above monitors. Anyone have experience of this? Thanks...

Thank you Elvis. That was exactly what I needed. All ok now.

Yes, but I do not have an "Activate New Products desktop shortcut". How can one get that back? (I activated the base game and other modules successfully some weeks ago, then deleted the activation shortcut - but looks like I forgot to activate the Marines module.)

I have CMSF2 installed on a new computer and everything seems to run successfully - except that the Marine module didn't get activated. I have the code but do not see any link to activate. How to do this? Thanks...

The 'Never Say You've Seen It All' Thread
Erwin replied to Machor's topic in General Discussion Forum
Loved it. -
Maybe am not reading it carefully enuff, but it sounds like the same ideas that were being talked about 20 years ago but using new fangled jargon and cool new words as in a academic, ivory tower marketing piece.

New Scenario: Tactical Operations Center
Erwin replied to MOS:96B2P's topic in CM Black Sea Maps and Mods
Good "camerawork" and looks great. For some reason my graphics even at 2700x1800 doesn't look as good. However, for only half an hour of combat seems to have taken more casualties than desired (for the 4 hour scenario). -
So long as the air intake doesn't go underwater stopping the supply of oxygen, the engine keeps working. Impressive nonetheless.
