agusto got a reaction from Doug Williams in Bagger 288
A few numbers regarding Bagger 288:

Weight: 12.804 tons or 12,8 kilotons (That' s about 7 times heavier than Hitlers Landkreuzer P1500 )
    Length: 246 meters
    Height: 106 meters
    Width: 46 meters

Building it cost 100.000.000 $ and took five years. It can move 76.000 cubic meters of soil every day.

Indeed. It's interesting that in the author's attempt to diminish the mythology around the Tiger he ... plays straight into the mythology around the Tiger Wittmann's rampage at V-B was actually impressive, but there's no need to gild the lily to make it seem impressive.

agusto reacted to George MC in German 'Handy Top Tips' armoured tactics document
This document has been bouncing around on the internet for a while now. I've just rediscovered it and it makes for some interesting reading - allowing for the usual panzer hyperbole vs untermenche rubbish - as it contains many tactical tips that are applicable to the CMRt battlefield. I think it's an early Ost front document - perhaps 1942, maybe early 43.

This is the full text which I've taken from the FieldGrau website (worth visiting in it's own right). The link is HERE

If you'd like the text in the original German I found this LINK.

I've highlighted the lessons I've found really useful on the CMRT battlefield.

    AUTHOR's PREFACE
The Panzer Regiment is, by reason of its firepower, protection and mobility the main fighting power of the Division. Its strength lies in unexpected, concentrated and determined attack; aggressive leadership and daring operations.   FORWARD   Combat in Russia has shown once again that for us, in action against the Communists, it is not so much the kind or number of our tanks but the spirit and skill on the tank soldiers that count. Only by these factors are German tanks always, even in Russia, victorious.   This exemplary combat spirit can however count for little as the weapons speed, armor or number of tanks in achieving success, if they are not led and employed by fully competent officers.   Superior tactical leadership in battle is a prerequisite when one desires few, or better still, no casualties.   The purpose of this volume is to collect the experiences of the veteran front-line combat leaders of our Regiments in action, and pass it on in simple and understandable form to our junior officers.   1. Before any attack acquaint yourself with the ground. Use the information provided by other units or by the map. Share this information with your subordinate commanders. Exact information and correct estimation of the terrain will be the decisive difference between victory and defeat.   2. No armored attack is so fast, even under the most pressing situation, that you do not have time to put subordinate leaders into the picture about the tactical situation, mission, and anything else which may impact on the coming action. Losses due to over-hasty action are your responsibility and place the success of the mission in jeopardy.   3. Only careful combat reconnaissance can protect you from surprise. Protect to your flanks as well as the front. Observation to all sides is the duty of every commander. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR EYE OUT FOR THE ENEMY!    4. Your entire ability in combat must be used to make a constant appreciation of the situation. Only in this manner can you make the correct decision during the decisive seconds and issue short, clear orders without delay. This is the kind of leadership for which you are responsible.    5. Iron radio discipline is a prerequisite of good leadership, particularly when your only method of command is radio. In the point company for instance, the trail platoons should not use the radio at all except in emergency, leaving the net clear for the point platoon leader.    6. You must lead with strength. At least two tanks must be forward, and the trail platoons must be held far enough forward to support the lead platoon. The more guns that fire in the first minute, the quicker the enemy will be defeated and the fewer losses you will suffer.    7. When breaking cover, do it quickly and together. The more targets the enemy is shown simultaneously, the harder his fire control and distribution will be, and the more guns you will have in effect on the enemy.    8. In the attack drive as fast as you can. At slow speed you can see and shoot only a little better than at high, and are much more likely to be hit. For a tank there should be only two speeds: the half (for firing!) and all out forward. This is the basic principal of tank combat!    9. When antitank weapons are encountered at long or medium ranges, you must first return fire and then maneuver against them. First make a firing halt in order to bring effective fire to bear - then commit the bulk of the company to maneuver on the enemy with the continued support of one platoon.    10. When antitank weapons are encountered at close range, stopping is suicide. Only immediate attack at the highest speed with every weapon firing will have success and reduce losses.    11. In combat against the antitank guns you may never - even under the protection of strong fire support - allow a single platoon to attack alone. Antitank weapons are not employed singly. Remember - lone tanks in Russia are lost!    12. You must continually keep a broad interval between vehicles. This splits the enemy's defensive fire and complicates his fire control. Narrow intervals must be avoided at all costs, especially in critical situations, or it will cost you losses.    13. When an impassable obstacle, for instance a minefield or antitank ditch, is encountered you must immediately and without hesitation give the order to withdraw into the nearest cover. Standing still, in open sight, trying to carry on the attack, has in such circumstances no sense and will only cost you losses. Your consideration on how to make a new start will be best made in the safety of cover.    14. When your attack must pass potential enemy tank positions, for instance a woodline, you should either pass by them so closely that you are inside their minimum range, or remain so far away that you are outside their maximum effective range.    15. Enemy tanks should not be attacked directly, because then they see you and know your strength before you can kill them. More often, you should avoid them until you can move into favorable firing positions, and surprise them from the flank or rear. Repelled enemy tank assaults must be aggressively pursued.    16. A strongpoint, for instance a small village or artillery battery position, whenever possible should be attacked from different directions simultaneously in order to split enemy defensive fire and deceive him about the true location and direction of the attack. In this manner your breakthrough will be easier and your losses fewer.    17. Always prepare dug in positions and camouflage against the possibility of air or artillery attack. Being sorry afterwards is no excuse for losses taken by these causes.    18. Ammunition should not always be conserved; in the decisive moment, if you want to save casualties, you may expend ammunition at exceptionally high rates (for instance, an emergency attack.)    19. Never split your combat power; that is to say, do not employ parts of the company in such a manner that they cannot support each other. When your attack has two objectives you should attack first one and then the other with all weapons. In this way you will more certainly end up with both objectives in hand and fewer casualties.    20. Support from artillery fire or dive bombers must be used immediately, that is to say, while the fire is still hitting the objective. Afterward, when the fire has stopped it is too late. You must know that mostly such fires only produce a suppressing effect, not a destroying one. It is better to risk a friendly shell or bomb than to charge into an active antitank defense.   21. Other weapons and arms, cross-attached to you, should not be misused. Do not use them for purposes for which they were not intended, for example, do not use tank destroyers as assault guns, or armored infantry as tanks, or recon or engineer troops as infantry.    22. Unarmored or lightly armored units attached to you must be protected from any unnecessary losses until they are needed for their own operational tasks, for which reason they were attached to you.    23. Cross-attached units placed under your command are not your servants, but your guests. You are answerable to supply them and share everything they need. Don't just use them on guard duty! In this way they will work better and more loyally for you when you need them. And that will be often!    24. In combined operations with infantry or armored infantry, you must make certain that the arms stick close together; only so can they help each other and achieve success. Which of the two is leading is a secondary matter; what must be known is that it is the intention of the enemy to separate them and that you must prevent this in all circumstances. Your battlecry must be "Protect the Infantry!" and the infantry's battlecry is "Protect the Tanks!"    25. You and your soldiers must always concentrate on your combat mission, i.e. "the bridge," and you may not turn aside, for example, to an enemy on your flank, unless he is actually dangerous to the accomplishment of your mission. Then you must attack and destroy him.    26. After a victorious battle; i.e. the seizure of a bridge or the occupation of a village, keep your helmets on. That is to say, prepare for a counterattack which will certainly come, perhaps in a different place than you expect. Later you can collect the spoils of victory.    27. In a defense or security mission place your tanks so that not only their firepower, but also their shock action can be brought into play. Also, leave only a few tanks in stationary firing positions. Keep most as mobile reserves under cover. Tanks defend aggressively!    28. Against strong enemy resistance, there is no point in continuing to attack. Every failed attack only costs more casualties. Your effort must always be to hold the enemy with only weak forces, in order to use mass of your strength at another, weaker place, breakthrough, and destroy the enemy by surprise attack in the rear or flank.    29. Never forget that your soldiers do not belong to you, but to Germany. Personal glory hunting and senseless dare-deviltry lead only to exceptional cases to success, but always cost blood. In battle against the Soviet- Russians you must temper your courage with your judgement, your cunning, your instincts and your tactical ability. Only then will you have the prerequisites to be victorious in battle and only then will your soldiers look on you with loyalty and respect and always stand by you in untiring combat readiness.    30. The panzer division in modern warfare today holds the former place of cavalry as the decisive arm of combat. Tank officers must carry on in the tradition of the cavalry, take up its aggressive spirit on behalf of the Panzer arm. Therefore take note, as a basic combat principle, of Marshall Blucher's motto, "FORWARD AND THROUGH!" (but with intelligence).

Now, I won't name any names yet, but 'this guy you all know' yet again came up with this neat new concept. New to CM, that is. The entire gaming world outside of CM has been saturated with it for years. What am I talking about? Achievements! Obviously for use in campaign games only.
Since I'm the go-to-guy for 'this person you all know' for this type of odd-job, I happily sank my modding teeth into this one.

I've been playing around with the idea for an evening. It's just a bit of fun, and nothing too serious. I just thought this was too cool not to share straight away:

agusto reacted to John Kettler in John Kettler vs BadgerDog (Forever War QB thread)
My finally achieved actual battle first battle with BadgerDog was, from my perspective, a very poor start on our Forever War! Am talking Grade One military debacle

Informal notes from USMLTUGF (US Military Liaison Team to Ukraine Ground Forces)

"Though we had no people anywhere in the immediate vicinity, we have learned that, for once, RT got the story right. The UGF, in what the Kiev government foolishly insists on calling the ATO to this day (guys, it's a war) showed convincingly why we need to make sure every UGF TG has one of our teams attached to it. Bluntly put, it was a disaster from the get and wound up essentially handing the Russian forces (still claiming to be pro-Russian separatists) nearly a TG consisting of aged BTR-70 intact, a TG including a Bulat tank,  ARTY observation vehicles, an AFV with BSR, and the newest IFV--with the highly capable new Bar ATGM installed! Not good."

"While our computerized terrain analysis capability and vast ISR support would certainly have helped, by any standards, even WW II, the UGF CO had a very poor understanding of the real nature of the ground (out of date maps, outdated recon info, no UAVs to help), then compounded those woes by bringing a peashooter to a rifle engagement--in the near darkness of dawn and driving rain! As you know, despite strong efforts and a lot of American ingenuity, there are still considerable UGF units with no thermals at all. In brutal terms, with some exceptions in upgraded tanks and new IFVs, the Ukrainians not only don't own the night, but they embarrass themselves and us when they try to. So it was here. They were shot to pieces and were unable to get a fix on where the shots were coming from. Equally, it's clear that either the UGF needs to relegate BTR-70s to rear security or rearm them with modular turrets possessing thermals, a 30 mm cannon and a Bar. As it is, they make excellent targets and fully live up to the old Russian characterization of "coffins on wheels."

"We were shocked to discover the Ukrainians attacked with no FS Plan or fires, of any sort, whatsoever. Not a Grad bombardment to disrupt the defenders and kill or wound personnel. Not a single TRP! What were these guys thinking?"

"In fairness to the totally outgunned UGF TG CO, the start line, dictated by still incompetent higher, was in enemy LOS/LF--with altogether predictable results. Half the recon screen died while on its first bound, and a tank firing from its hilltop position blew up another BRDM-2 before it could so much as move. We think a BTR-82 got two that actually managed to almost complete their first bound. Several vehicles exploded while on the start line, and some which somehow were masked from crossfires initially, wound up unwittingly reversing into them while attempting to honor the terms of a proposed cease fire. We know there was such an effort because we, and doubtless many others, intercepted the broadcast, which was in clear. Unfortunately, it was so garbled (will the Ukrainians ever get their radios sorted out?) the Russian CO may not have understood it. Or chose not to. We simply don't know.

If things are really this bad for the UGF, I feel for the UGF troops trying to defend their country with ancient weapons!  Attacking in heavy rain and near darkness was supposed to degrade BD's thermals. Not exactly what happened, was it? Instead, we have yet more proof that war should be left to the professionals. And while I clearly am on the wrong side of a near vertical and bloody learning curve, not only is there cause for hope, but for joy! Joy? Why joy? Though it took weeks to get operational, I have now completed my first ever CMx2 PBEM and am successfully using CM Helper to take the misery out of PBEM!

BD and I are about to have at each other again. This time some will die amid the beauty of the sunlit steppe. Perhaps in some variety of internecine warfare. What's that? I must away, for SLIM calls me forth to drink Heineken and eat Edam at a place called Bridge Number Seven!

With the exciting news that a Ver, 4.00 of CMX2 will be under development at an unspecified time in the future and that the features to be included have yet to be decided on, do any of the features on this whimsical wish list, many of which have been raised before and which apply equally across FI, BN and RT, strike a chord?

Or are many/all of them merely tilting at windmills?
Make the branching in AI orders have more conditions, make it non-binary.Similar in Campaigns, plus simple dialog-based choices so the designer doesn't have to insert a scenario for every choice they want to accommodate.  Updating all the UI elements to C21st standards (scalable, configurable, incorporating standard UI conventions like scroll bars and in-place editing). Camera height going to actual eye levels of selected elements. Allow Broken troops to rout off the map edge in all cases if they're still running away and they hit it; if they leave from within a setup or exit zone, they're not counted as casualties;if they leave off an unmarked edge, they're MIA. Improve the TacAI so it's more aware of what's around it and can react to that knowledge. Including more surrendering when cut off, surrounded and about to be wiped out. Especially allow it to abort/reschedule script movement orders when it's being forced to run a gauntlet. Tagging for units and AI order groups so that groups get orders appropriate to the kind of assets which will be assigned. Make screen edge scrolling toggleable. Being able to Tab to a waypoint. better representation of close assault on vehicles. The current one, whereby an AFV can be 'assaulted' from up to 30m away - sometimes with an obstacle to movement in the way - is far too generic and allows something that happened on a vanishingly small scale to become almost commonplace. The real short range danger to AFV's were 'zooks, 'shrecks, fausts and Piats not 'improvised' weapons. better auto-selection of forces in Mix option, in QBs, particularly in the tiny and small categories. stopping the heavy 'clipping' that is still possible with AFVs. I know Steve has said this is very difficult but having, for instance, a tank drive 'through' another tank on a narrow bridge is a real immersion killer, IMO. Never going to happen but... Tighter C&C around out of command units. Ideally, no communication with them at all but, more likely, some limitation on command options. Less casualties, much more suppression effects on infantry under fire, particularly in heavy cover/buildings.

Leather helmets used in motor-racing were adopted as head protection. The design of the leather helmets was a ridged dome of pressed and glued together leather to absorb impact. The inner layers are cushioned by quilting a pattern of "pockets" filled with shredded leather or horse hair. A "skirt" around the lower half provides protection from the elements as all early race cars were open cockpit.

The hardware is a big difference from the capability.  The strong example would be Iraqis with M1 tanks, it was functionally irrelevant what equipment they had, as long as the men manning it were poorly trained, equipped, and somesuch.

    That said:

If there's superiority in the American military, it is in the three following areas:

    1. Size matters.  While it's getting a lot smaller, the simple size and funding of the American military means a lot of capabilities that are simply too expensive for most other countries are a matter of course for the US (see the combined air fleet of the USAF, USMC, and USN and then compare it to the various other NATO countries, or things like having several carrier battle groups active at once)

    2. Logistics/support/expeditionary warfare.  When France went into Mali it was riding in USAF planes, and supported by logistics moved through the US log systems.  Further in the operations over Libya while the "shooting" part of the operation was very well spread across the different NATO members, the AWACS/refueling/other support asset was overwhelmingly yankee imperialist.

While it's easy to funnel a lot of this into "bigger is better" is worth noting this ability to not only deploy, but sustain forces, and equip them with potent enabler elements is something that is well into an art/skill all its own, and is finely honed in the regards that since 1890 or so, Americans have been doing most of their fighting well over the horizon on distant shores.

No other force can do that to the degree the American military can, and again it's a skill and training that is well beyond simply having more planes or money to expend.

    3. The average training tempo, and realism for the US military is quite a bit more elaborate than many peer countries.  The number of rounds fired, and miles maneuvered by my tank company in a year was roughly equal to how much some battalion sized armor elements in western European military forces do in a similar time scale.  Additionally every "combat" unit (to include National Guard units) goes to NTC on a regular basis to get its face peeled off by the OPFOR in training that is what could best be called "hyper realistic" (in that the enemy is significantly more capable than he should be) situations.  It's hard, tough training, but what separates it from simply tossing troops in Siberia or marching several hundred KM through North Africa, is that the hardness has a focus, and there's a lot of post-action analysis.  It's not just enough to successfully assault the fake town in the desert, but each step will be broken down, and looked at honestly (having sat through some other country's AARs, there's a lot of face-saving and hand waving when things go wrong.  This is really not the case in an American type AAR in which even your random privates can speak up about what they saw/suggestions to do it better).

You get a lot of anecdotal stuff, Legionaries roundhouse kicking Taliban, British bayonet charges, 100% objective success rate for Excercise Donbass Freedom or whatever, but there's a wide margin between what the American military is capable of, and what the rest of NATO and most potential threat nations can do*

*Which is not to say it is unbeatable, but what gets tiring is the "well we have 300 Leo 2s and they're better than Abrams!" or "here's this link discussing how fast the French moved through Mali when it took the US ten years to sort of pacify Iraq!" There's certainly ways to beat the US in conventional warfare even...it's just not really in trying to meet it at a 1:1 ratio in terrain that doesn't highly favor you if you get my drift

Of course, as a post script I'm not sure how much longer we'll be able to maintain a lot of those advantages.  One of the great problems with being "the best" is that it engenders a perception that it is simply a state that will be maintained without further investment, when in reality we're seeing the miltiary budget get hacked and slashed to maintain other spending, while at the same time not seriously re-examining if a lot of what we invested in during "good" times is worth keeping (like the always lovely JSF).

And even if you wouldnt find anything, you would probably just make something up. I wont support you trying to piss me off.

PBEM stands for play by email and that is in all games and works well.  WeGo over TCP-IP was not available at first in CM2x but was added back in. I was going to say in Black Sea but checked and see that it is mentioned in the engine manual for CMBS, CMBN and CMRT.  It is also mentioned as a new feature in the CMRT title manual.  I know some fixes happened recently that really helped fix things up I just cannot remember if the discussion was here regarding RedThunder or regarding Black Sea.

It would be good to confirm if the patch for CMRT 1.03 contained those fixes.

PS. When you purchase the game you get a title specific manual and an engine related manual.  The engine manual has details on how to setup your TCP-IP environment.

    Hey guys,

I just bought Combat Mission: Shock Force and I decided to take a cool screenshot.

I edited it a bit to make it seem more realistic. Hope you guys enjoy, and feedback is welcome!
