Been re-reading "Decision in the Ukraine, Summer 1943, II SS and III Panzerkorps", and have scanned maps (L-37-6-B Dmitrijewka, 1939-ish) from the archives at the Library of Congress.
Time to finally break down and try to create a Campaign based around Aug., 1, 1943. Tons of action in the book as the Germans try/push the Russians back across the Mius. First comes the map work. Probably multiple master maps as the scope of the battles spans from east of Gerassimova to south of Marinovka, some 10km by 10km, at least at first blush. First up, where to divide the map?

Pre-ordered. Gotta support the little guys. CMBN, CMFI, CMRT, CMFB, CMBS, expansions, etc, as well as the 3 original titles. Jeez, I miss CMAK
Running a small, light vehicle or two back and forth right behind your advancing troops in the desert to create a big-a$$ dust cloud and obscure the actual troop concentrations and movement... yup, good times.

I have 6 weeks of vaca this year (a bonus from the company), and I can't think of anything better than:
    a) playing CMFR,
    b) finishing my map et al based on scans of Library of Congress maps "L-37-6-B Dmitrijewka" (covers Dmitrijewka and Stepanowka). Gotta find the right units and books about that area, and build a scenario/campaign.

Has to happen eventually, but "After 12 years, support for Windows XP ended April 8, 2014" -- sheesh, that's nigh on 6 years past EOL.
Time for an update to something more recent, like Windows 7. That EOL is only Jan 14, 2020.  Loads of time...

My all time favorite quote from work:
"Well, it is not known not to work..."  when asked whether the software we build will actually do a certain, specific task.

herr_oberst got a reaction from Freyberg in Interested to hear if you are trying a Combat Mission 2 engine game for the first time because of the new nations now available?
    No.
I purchase games/modules in order to support BFC and what they are doing.  Since the early Alpha AAR with 3 pixeltruppen marching abreast, and "Holy Crap, it's Squad Leader in 3D" (my initial reaction), through the current release, I've pre-ordered all the WWII games/modules. Don't have near the time I'd like to play, have 3 different battle maps in various states of completion (1 CMRT - Mius River bend, 2 CMFI - Kertsch peninsula) from 1:25000 copies of captured Truppenkarte maps gleaned from the Library of Congress vaults.
Even have CMBS, though I'm not a fan of modern stuff.
I think of it as placing a wager against my future retirement -- when I finally do retire, I'll have all kinds of content to explore and play.

How well would your M4A3E8 stand up to a ginormous crustacean?  Does an MG42 just bounce off the carapace? Would 8.8cm KwK 36/37/41's rule the battlefield?

Hmm... would I be more happy if BFC stuck with working only on the period and theaters I am interested in?  Most certainly!
Are there other advocates/client/customers who are interested in other periods and theaters than I?  Certainly.
Should BFC pursue other ventures (i.e., stuff we'll never see as John Q Public) for non-gamers who see the value of a tactical sim that could be tailored for their needs, and pay potentially much larger dollars for it?  Certainly.
Should Steve and Charles do what they want with their company, directing its investments and time?  Certainly.
    Sometimes, reality is a b@#$h.

If you work in software development, you know there are ALWAYS software bugs present.  Yeah, the 'development guidelines' want 100% coverage of testing cases, but as software complexity grows, the 100% mark grows what feels like exponentially -- generally no-one can afford to test all the possible permutations. It all depends on the risk associated with an error. For a game like CM, the bar can be much lower than, say, flight control software for a commercial airplane. Pixeltruppen meeting an untimely demise is vastly different than real world results.
Some errors you know about prior to release, some you don't until it is released "into the wild". People do unexpected things. I've  been releasing software in one capacity or another since 1986, and nothing is ever perfect. You always strive to eliminate anything known to cause issues for X percent of cases. The question is always, "What is X? And where does a particular issue get prioritized? Above or below the line?"
IMHO, BFC does a good job of eliminating egregious issues and issues enjoyable, playable software. Patches follow to improve what has been released. I say go for it. I'd rather be playing than waiting forever...
