Michael Emrys
Yeah; pre-battle intel has been a scenario design option since CMSF. Which makes me wonder how often it has been used by scenario designers, and to what extent. Michael
Grisha
Okay cool. I have Afghanistan, Battle for Normandy and Fortress Italy of the new ones. Didn't realize this. Most of my experience has been with CMBB and CMBO(edited).
YankeeDog
Which makes me wonder how often it has been used by scenario designers, and to what extent. Michael Well, off of the top of my head, pre-battle intel is used in the CMBN demo scenario that is also the 1st battle of the "Task Force Raff" training campaign included with CMBN, so most players who have played the CMBN demo should be familiar with it. Pre-battle intel also features in several battles of the more recently released Road to Nijmagen campaign included with the Market Garden module. These are just the first examples I could think of; there are many others. What did you all think those enemy icons you were seeing during setup phase were there for? Decoration?

I don't recall seeing any during the setup phase of the demo, but it's been a while and I may have just forgotten. What I do recall is having the crews of the ACs dismount and crawl up to the hedgerow and observe for a while. By the time the rest of the force had shown up they had spotted a few units. Those ATGs were a bitch to locate though. Michael
Grisha
YankeeDog, it's been awhile since I played the newer versions and I only played them a couple times to be honest. My heart has always been set on the Russian theater for WWII. I thought Fortress Italy would grab me due to the terrain, but so that didn't work out. I didn't even check out how scenarios are made. Of course, this all changes with Red Thunder. I'm a sucker for Russians. Izvinite!
YankeeDog
Glad to have you back, Grisha. I myself have enjoyed CMSF, CMBN & CMFI, but I am with you in that as far as I'm concerned these prior titles are secondary to the main event -- the East Front! I do not think you will be disappointed....
stikkypixie
Which makes me wonder how often it has been used by scenario designers, and to what extent. Michael It wasn't very useful in CMSF and CMA because all you would get were the <?> without knowing what it was (tank, infantry, etc...).
Grisha
Thanks, YankeeDog. Not quite the frothing-at-the-mouth-soviet like back then anymore, but I'll always be ready to play when it comes to the Russian front.

Bil Hardenberger
I thought I would start this turn off with today's official tank porn: Miss February, the T34/85: ..and her hotter little sister, the OT34: This turn started off with my SMG team in position.. it didn't take long to spot an enemy infantryman.. obviously oriented towards my moving Rifle Team... it only took one squirt from the SMG to take this fellow out at around 15 meters: Another enemy soldier was spotted later in the turn... note that this soldier was killed before the two grenades (red circles) landed... after the grenades exploded I heard another soldier cry out in pain... so it sounds like Elvis suffered three casualties this turn (possibly). So this is the setup at turn end.. note the second sound contact. The one enemy unit I encountered didn't seem to have enough firepower to be a complete squad, so I suspect I am facing enemy teams.. if that's the case then the one team I hit this turn must be down to one man. My goal is now to pin the second (team) before it can slink away and to eliminate the first... if this is his recon, then I want to blind him as quickly as possible.
Ts4EVER
Is there any performance difference between the PPsh41s with 71 and 35 round mag?
Battlefront.com
And the award for First Blood goes to (crinkles envelope, pulls out piece of paper... dramatic pause...) Bil, for his SMG Forest Encounter! Congratulations Bil Steve
Krilly
I thought I would start this turn off with today's official tank porn: ..and her hotter little sister, the OT34: Ooh man she is a spunky hot little devil! I christen her Roxanne. Enjoyed the update, good to see first blood is spilled.
waclaw
I have a question, definitely added to the sounds of the Soviet weapons, but is otherwise in terms of sound changed anything? (eg whether the game can randomly choose between several ambient sounds / music - so that each time it was different? etc.) ps. give to images without the effect of the film - with practice I know, no one uses (just see some videos on youtube, even movies not recorded with this effect)
LukeFF
ps. give to images without the effect of the film - with practice I know, no one uses (just see some videos on youtube, even movies not recorded with this effect) I'll second that. The whole sepia-tone look just looks ugly IMO.
Endymion
I'll second that. The whole sepia-tone look just looks ugly IMO. I guess it's personal preference because I like Bil's screenshots in movie mode more than stock colours...
Fizou
Is the OT-34 able to use the main gun (or is it just a dummy)?
waclaw
Endymion This "film effect" only looks good on screen. They do not show how the game looks in practice - because really this effect is used very rarely
Endymion
Endymion This "film effect" only looks good on screen. They do not show how the game looks in practice - because really this effect is used very rarely I realize that and I never use it myself in game. But as screenshots go, especially the ones made by Bil, I prefer the ones where he uses movie mode, they just look prettier to me. As for the game colour palette, you can see how it looks like in the other AAR, by Elvis. It's a bit too colourful and bright for my tastes (same as stock CMBN or CMFI) and I will probably use some texture and colour palette modification as soon as it comes out. For now, I like what Bil does with the screenshots a lot. But like I said, it's all a matter of taste.
permanent666
Is the OT-34 able to use the main gun (or is it just a dummy)? as this site (http://modelarmour.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=958:dragon-ot-3476-model-1943-no112-factory&catid=37:kits&Itemid=60) indicates it was completely operable. Another fact I was not aware of is the long range these flamethrower tanks had.
Lanzfeld
Remember Bill that the scream you heard after the nades went off COULD be an already wounded guy (red cross) getting killed. I have had that happen before.
Fizou
Another fact I was not aware of is the long range these flamethrower tanks had. Thanks. Wounder how ammo loadout is affected? The fuel needs to be stored somewhere? I knew the range was long but not 130 meters long. Thats impressive. Any grog that can inform if it was a typical engagement range or if it usually was used much closer to target?
Bil Hardenberger
Remember Bill that the scream you heard after the nades went off COULD be an already wounded guy (red cross) getting killed. I have had that happen before. Yes I had considered that, which is why I said (possible).. it has yet to be confirmed. _____________ This "film effect" only looks good on screen. They do not show how the game looks in practice - because really this effect is used very rarely Sorry but I only play with the game on War Movie mode now... whether it be CMFI, CMBN, or now CMRT. But that's just me and my preference. _____________ I wanted to make one note from last turn... previously my HMGs were getting pulled around like they were ATGs and could only be given Move orders.. now with the new BETA (yes we recently upgraded) they can indeed be hustled forward so my HMGs are now on the move heading towards KT3 and KT2 specifically to backup my scouts.
Macisle
Hopefully, we can get some nice standard-color closeups of the Soviet gear from Elvis then. I'm another one in the camp that never uses Movie mode (though I'm glad BF included it for those that do).

Shelia is a more appropriate name for a tank. Bil, great stuff!
