hummm patche 4, I need your opinion
Warts 'n' all replied to Falaise's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
They are indeed. Hopefully we all learn from, and help each other. I'm just beginning to think that engine 4 was a step too far. From my own experience the "Combine Squad" command was useful. But I don't think any of the other features were essential, or that they added to the game. And we have had to wait two years for a patch, only for it to create a new problem, hitherto unseen. -

Wasn't it Dartford Mick and the Tax Dodgers who said "You can't always get what you want, and if you moan too much, you might just, get something you don't really need?" In other words, was Engine 3 so bad that we needed engine 4? -

Finally I got my Limey arse bitten too. As I stated to the Honorable Gentlemen of the House on a previous occasion, during all of my "Roadblock" tests I allowed my troops to pick their own targets, and had no problems at all. Over the last few days I've also gone back to the The Road to Montebourg Campaign, I've only previously played it using engine 2. And having never played it using engine 3 I thought I'd give it a whirl now. First two missions no problems at all. But, during the third "Le Grand Hameau", I have had units that have had "Face" or "Target" commands head off through the nearest gap and into danger. I'm not sure if it happens the moment they lose sight of an enemy or not, I'll have to look more closely at the enemy units the next time it occurs. Watch this space. -

I'm sorry I can't be of any more help. But, having now run seven tests my troops always maintain their position at the gap, whatever Jerry throws at them. Also, during my tests I have never seen the strange behaviour that the German troops were exhibiting in an earlier post. This would lead me to conclude that the problem is not being generated by the patch per se. But, rather be a conflict between files which may have arisen during downloading. I'm not enough of an expert to be able to explain why things happen differently for different players Just as an example, I encountered problems with units missing from the map when playing "Amiens Tonight" on Engine 3, which it's designer did not encounter himself. And he was unable to help me resolve it. Having tried it again with the new Engine 4 Patch it now works properly. But, I've no idea why. -

I don't see (no pun intended) how it can be down to LOS. As my boys can see the same enemy units as yours without getting the urge to run through the gap towards them. -

@domfluff Thanks for this series of screenshots. That is exactly how I've been running my tests, without the unfortunate side effects. Even when my guys have had mortar rounds dropping on their side of the hedgerow, they still don't run through the gap towards the enemy. Hopefully players having this problem can get it fixed soon. I'm certainly glad that it isn't happening to me. -
In Limeyland if it had the mg mounting mini turret it was a "Lee" if it just had a low profile hatch it was a "Grant". But, just to confuddle us you'll sometimes find M3's called "Lee-Grants".

I've now run a few tests. I've tried both the stand alone battle version of "Roadblock" and the "Task Force Raff" version. I make sure that the Squad is centred on the gap, and I don't split it into teams. It doesn't matter if they take casualties from direct fire or indirect mortar rounds, they still won't run through the gap towards the enemy like fanatics, or run away from the gap in a panic. It certainly sounds like you need help from Tech Support -

I tried this with one US Squad in Roadblock. I had them go "Quick" up to the gap in the hedgerow at "Overwatch" so that they would attract attention, rather than use "Move", Hunt" or "Slow". Once they came under fire I issued no other orders for the entire battle. They stayed by the gap, and even tried to fight back when they weren't cowering. At NO point did they run either through the gap towards the Germans, or run away back towards their own lines. By the end of the battle they had been reduced to just 3 men, and their moral status was ""Nervous". -
Looks great.

I much prefer having my troops "cower" as they did when the game was originally released, than running out into enemy fire in a blind panic as was happening with engine 4 before the new patch. And, of course, I'm glad that I am now able to use BARs and Brens properly again. -

Thanks to the good Captain for those great pics. Perfect illustrations of how much better the game looks with the trees on Full. -

Ah, scenes like this. It's what the MG42 was made for. -
Yes, I did. To begin with I had the same problem with the game crashing as soon as I hit the little red button. And I tried the things that Stonecutter described with the same crashing. I left the campaign and went off and played others. When I gave it another whirl some months later it worked fine, sadly I can't offer any explanation for the difference as my settings for the game were still the same. Just run a little test... I skipped through the recce mission by hitting Cease Fire, which means a "Total Defeat" and went onto the first big battle. I set up a naval bombardment and everything went fine. I have a mixture of guns and explosions mods but they are quite old. Sorry I can't shed any more light.
