Yep, I understood that people were quite unhappy when it was proven a myth in 2015. Somewhere I read, this was why the movie was made in 2016 in the first place.

Yesterday I watched „28 Soldiers“ on YT. A 2016 Russian movie about a „hero tale“ at the gates of Moscow in winter 1941. It seems the story was proven to be a myth, but still a pretty good movie. After a somewhat slow start, loads of action and loads of (CGI) Pz III’s and IV‘s. Quite worthwhile to watch.

Yep, it’s the known habit of confusing detail with realism.
@Endyamon What makes you think all the detailed info you get is “realistic” or better “accurate”? Plus, what do you need it for?
In RL, I am an engineer and learned “too much info is not always good”.

I would not necessarily say so. You might call it „initiative“ instead of „skipping the C2 system.
@MikeyD „recon by fire“ is certainly no unrealistic procedure. Why not shooting at the famous church tower, expecting there is a FOB hidden? Or at the only building or patch of wood on the open plane in front of you?
I agree, this can become pretty gamey. Therefore I try to avoid it in too extreme situations. E.g., if there is nothing suspicious in a certain spot, except knowing that some guys far away spotted an enemy there.
For me a, much more annoying practice are for the „mad last turn rushes“, which some people seem to like. Though, indeed, one even can construct reasonable excuses for those.
In the end, CM is a game and when playing H2H, one should agree on a common understanding and set of rules first.

Perhaps, because he is afraid of the firing squad, if the shells fall short.🤔
How often do you experience in RL, that things take ages, when a newby is on the job. And seconds, when an old hand does it…

As a general remark: In another thread a long time ago, one of the professionals in this forum estimated that battles in CM play out about four times faster than on reality.

    Hi Ross
I just played the new version of your scenario. Much better now! And nicer.
With the new time limit, it is really a race. I still won with 11 minutes on the clock, but I guess it helps somewhat, to know where you are going.
In the end I failed for losses, but that's because I became a little too "gung-go" and went chasing survivors.

That would bring us back to the discussion about „micro management“ or „micro realism“ in CM. Like the old argument, that not all troops deploy behind a wall, but on the „attacker side“, too.

To date the best overall account of the battle between the 3rd Infantry Division and the Panzer Brigade „Westfalen“, which I know. Much better than the two Marc Felton videos about the battle.

I liked „Bloody Buron“ quite much. It‘s a huge one, but again with the Germans in defense, I found it manageable enough. I remember a pretty desperate fight, with many thrilling „micro-actions“.

Re „Huzzar!“: There are a few different versions around. The latest is „Huzzar Redux“, IIRC. It is a „night action“ at sun set with fading light. Or was it the other way round? Can‘t remember exactly. Anyway, one mostly plays in poor visibility, which makes it a little more difficult. But, yes, that‘s a thrilling scenario.

„Wittmann‘s Demise“ is great. Fairly large, but still quite manageable from the German side.

I think the way to help young people develop an interest in history is to present the real history. It's plenty interesting as it is.

I think it's only fair that the actual people who fight real wars are also represented in game. So if I'm playing a game set in ancient Greece, I would not mind seeing the Sacred Band of Thebes make an appearance, just as I would expect to see female soldiers in a game featuring the modern Israeli Army.
What I don't like is if different minority groups are inserted in times and places where they historically were not present. But that's another story.

As others mentioned already the „hunt“ command is not „walking“ and it does in general increase fatigue quite fast, not only in snowy conditions. 200m is a long distant for a hunt command in CM, you will see that in other scenarios and conditions soon.
As far as tactics are concerned: You did not describe the situation, but I assume, you tried to move your „front line troops“ 200m forward into unknown terrain. That‘s not a good idea. The same is true, if you want, e.g., to clear a forest which you by-passed earlier. I usually let a scout team sprint forward about 30m, let the rest and watch a minute and then bring the rest of the squad forward. Preferably not into the same place as the scouts. Just in case somebody plans evil things with a mortar and waits for more targets…
