Excellent introduction @Bud_B! I love how you have the snow storm slowly covering the landscape.  I will not be reading the comic until the end but @Bud_B suggested I at least say hello before things get going.  My chosen forces will have some new gear to show off but I'm not saying what it is.  You guys will see it when @Bud_B's comic characters do .  So, sit back and enjoy the comic and I'll fade into the background and let my pixel troops do the talking from now on.

Why is CM Great? One answer might be that real militaries use it as a training tool, and I doubt they’re trying to simulate what may keep them alive… badly.
Another answer might be that I can realistically simulate countless battles with friends and learn real tactics.
Another are the fantastic mini-stories we see happen in each battle. Like, perhaps this One  that takes place over 5 panels. Could not believe my eyes when I saw it occur.

    There is a setting, indeed.

Go to settings, system, display, then at the bottom, graphics settings.
under Graphics Performance Preferences, you can set specific executables, (eg: CM) to use High Performance. That will use the discrete card rather than the built-in motherboard one.

Not sure what the offensive “bad taste” element is here but it is very realistic.  This stuff happens all the time on exercises and we develop all sorts of methods to try and control it.   The lesson here is that spotting in a buttoned vehicle RL is much harder than a lot of people believe.

Nice explanation and good point on the 'fighting' bit :).

Jockeying in CM is a bit difficult, although with using pauses it's quite doable imo especially with modern tanks and using the pause feature.

Bud Backer reacted to IICptMillerII in Benefits and risks of hull down battle positions
This entire discussion is misunderstanding some basic fundamentals.
Hull down means that a tanks hull is covered by terrain or a fortification, leaving only the turret exposed.

    (Not my graphic)
Fighting from hull down is entirely different. Tanks who fight from hull down are not stationary. While not under fire, they observe from a hull down position. This increases protection, reduces visibility (reduces the chance of being spotted by presenting a smaller target), while maintaining situational awareness by observing the battlefield. Once engaged, tanks move. They fire from a hull down position (ideally) and then reverse into a turret down (similar to hull down, but now both the hull and turret of the tank are completely concealed by terrain) while reloading. The tank either then moves back up into a hull down position to fire again, or changes positions to a new battle position and does the drill over again. This is known as jockying. A tank moving from hull down firing to turret down reloading and back to hull down is known as a berm drill.
Here is a video I have posted before showing the basics of a berm drill, without firing the main gun:
A test that has a tank in hull down being fired at while not moving is a flawed test. Anything not moving while being fired at is increasing its chance of being hit. Whether that is an infantryman, a machine gun team, a tank, an IFV, whatever. Displacing is a fundamental tactical movement.

Bud Backer got a reaction from dbsapp in Soviet vs NATO tanks discussion in "International Security" magazine
I think this is a problem I am facing. For context, I only play QB. Anything short of an Assault in QB will give numbers a lot closer to 1.5:1, maybe 2:1 but I believe even an assault is still well under 3:1 for the attacker in terms of points. So for both Modern and WW2 battles I’m having a very hard time having the mass of armour I need to fight in what I think is “Russian style.” If my enemy is almost at parity to me points wise, what am I to do?

Just to add/follow up to my first post on this whole Soviet/US force balance thing, I can't speak for CMBS but for CMCW the were never any secret meetings in dark rooms where we all went "Wow those Soviets are too good, we need to nerf them to maintain US superiority".  First off, I am not a US citizen so not really interested in some sort of US superiority myth.  Second, I have never seen or heard BFC promote the same, they are simply interested in trying to be as accurate as possible because it is core to the brand.
Third, it would have been a really bad idea game-wise to do this.  Both CMSF2 and CMBS already demonstrate asymmetric superiority of the US inventory, well into the modern timeframe when the US Army has been unchallenged and at its height (how long that will last is a matter of rigorous debate).  Why on earth would we want another game that models that direction?  It is a big reason why we stayed away from the 1985-1991 timeframe.  We were looking for later Cold War balance that makes for a different gaming experience, more like the WW2 titles with modern kit.
I can recall exactly one US weapon system we pushed to have beefed and that was DPICM, we really did not tinker under the hood for anything else.  We knew we had balance from the the very first Alpha scenario tests.
So I know there will be those that cry "lies, lies, it is all a BFC conspiracy", fine we can post facts and analysis here all day and they will remain unconvinced.   For everyone else, as I said we no doubt have western biases - it is almost unavoidable - however, we also remain open to credible facts that tell us we are missing something.

M1A2 Abrams and Javelins in Black Sea are disruptive technologies, and trying to work out what to do against them is one of the core problems you need to solve - there really aren't any reliably good answers.

The T-90AM and AT-14 can both penetrate an Abrams frontally... but probably won't. Both of them will happily go through the sides, and both are significantly cheaper - you will usually have more of them.

This means that the basic, generic idea has to be to coordinate an attack simultaneously from at least two different directions, ideally with at least 90 degrees displacement between them. If this was two T-90 platoons, then each would attack on-line, and at the same time, and would need their flanks screened, presumably by infantry.

To make this work requires excellent reconnaissance (drones do a lot of work here), excellent counter-reconnaissance (this is well developed by the Russians in general, but even just thinking in terms of drones - the Russian anti-air is superb, and can easily blind the US from the air), and great coordination (this one is on you).

Too many rules 🙂 The more rules you have the more likely I'll accidentally violate them because I cannot remember them. LOL says the guy who helped develop the Hard Cat rules. Speaking of which I should really be pitching that to opponents more and try to get some games going using them.
Yeah this is pretty much it for me plus for probe, assault and attack the defenders can get TRPs and the attacker can pre-plan what ever they want. The thing is once the game is going there are no safe zones. Don't expect the setup zone to be some permanent home base that will not get hit by a barrage.
Why not. I'm approaching a village why wouldn't' I blast the heck out of the enemy approaches or retreat routes.
Mulligan - what's a mulligan. There are no do overs in life, why would there be in combat mission. I have no idea what you meant by engine process problems though...
If you want to have restrictions on this follow the Hard Cat rules - they at least are more realistic than a blanket ban - which I would never want to have.
Huh - what is this. PBEM use password protected .ema files there are no .bts files in PBEM - except any intermediate saves I might make if I have to go to dinner or something. Am I missing something?
Humm I feel like I am missing something here
Yeah, that's not going to happen. I can look up if I played a scenario before but not a map. Heck sometimes I don't realize I've been on a map until deep into the game. As for scenarios if someone specifically wants to play a scenario blind, sure I'm OK with putting the the effort to find one we haven't played but anything else I just asking me to make a mistake that violate your rule.
Sure OK but there are a lot of variables here. So, I'm happy to discuss it but writing it into a rule like this might just mean I cannot play you. Take for example a long running game that just finished I played a turn a day during the week but not the weekends pretty consistently except a few times I managed to put in three or four turns in a day. That would have been in violation of this rule. Better to discuss things with your opponent than a hard rule.
    That I agree with.
For sure if you really are bailing. But see above.
My bottom line is less blanket etiquette rules and more discussion with opponents.

These results are consistent with my findings during play. I have repeatedly used trenches to enhance the concealment of AT guns, and especially when coupled with the camo bonus, found them to be devastatingly effective when properly positioned. Not all terrain is well suited for ATGs, and it’s important to recognize that when purchasing a force to not end up with fodder for tanks. I’d change nothing about their points.

I suppose I should have been more precise in describing my experience - I don’t usually bother with scenarios, and I haven’t played against the AI in quite a few years. So my experience with them is purely against other players and being both and on the receiving and giving end of the barrel I think they can be very useful. Certainly when they supplement my more mobile elements.

I re-ran my the test with longer spotting time and added in a camo/no camo comparision. My numbers are slightly different than what I posted last night but don't change the conclusions.
Range at which trenches can be spotted: ~550m Camo Pak 40 in trench spotted at ~300m Non-como Pak 40 in trench spotted at ~350m Camo Pak 40 out of trench spotted at ~600m Non-camo Pak 40 out of trench spotted at ~700m It looks to me that the guns are still better off in a trench than not in a trench.
