Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich
Sgt.Squarehead replied to KGBoy's topic in Combat Mission - General Discussion
"The German chemist Friedrich Hauschild had been aware of the American amphetamine Benzedrine ever since the drug has been used as a doping product in the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936. The following year he managed to synthesize methamphetamine, a close cousin of amphetamine, while working for Temmler-Werke, a Berlin-based pharmaceutical company. Temmler-Werke began selling methamphetamine under the brand name Pervitin in the winter of 1937. Partly thanks to the company’s aggressive advertising campaign, Pervitin became well known within a few months. The tablets were wildly popular and could be purchased without a prescription in pharmacies. One could even buy boxed chocolates spiked with methamphetamine. But the drug’s most important use was yet to come." https://time.com/5752114/nazi-military-drugs/ Ohler gets a few mentions in the Time article, it seems to have been taken from another interesting sounding title in a similar vein: https://global.oup.com/academic/product/killer-high-9780190463014?cc=us&lang=en& -

Some tank duel tests (CMBN)
Sgt.Squarehead replied to Drifter Man's topic in Combat Mission - General Discussion
The AAMG on all of the M10 based TDs can only fire to the rear of the turret.....Just look at how it is mounted. If you want to fire it forward, you need to do this: CM tank crew can't do that. These TDs typically travel with their turrets traversed to the rear, I'd guess the AAMG is mostly for self defence while travelling thus (other than it's use against aircraft, if the Germans had any, obviously). -
Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich
Sgt.Squarehead replied to KGBoy's topic in Combat Mission - General Discussion
I seem to remember reading excerpts, perhaps in relation to an article detailing the use of Captagon by ISIS & similar groups.....The effects of mind altering drugs in combination with cult-like pseudo-political/religious indoctrination should not be underestimated. A big part of defeating your enemy is making him think he's being defeated.....If he's incapable of assimilating that concept, you are always going to have issues. -
Wot he said! But wait.....Maybe they stacked on top like that in case of captured Javelins?

Now that looked like our M48A3 getting hit by a RPG and once again I saw no ERA related text. This is good. -
Will Russia Attack Ukraine in September?
Sgt.Squarehead replied to Armorgunner's topic in Combat Mission Black Sea
Yeah, the Russian border just keeps pushing closer to those NATO bases, eh? -
That's a screenshot from an in progress H&E scenario (Mission 5 - 'Year of The Rat - 1972', an excellent campaign by @puje). Yes he has an M-79 and also a M-16, yes they are both fully functional (the mighty @37mm discovered some witchery to make this possible). Both weapons are purely visual effects, the actual mechanic underneath is for an AK with an underslung 40mm grenade launcher, but in game you really wouldn't know (other than the ammo listings, which still show 7.62x39mm etc. because he just can't change those). H&E is actually two modules in one, by using the [bhcw] tag, the game is set to (as best as we can manage) represent the Vietnam War era. Naturally in purely technical terms it's not quite as it should be, but once the game starts immersion should take over. Without the [bhcw] tag, the game is essentially CM:SF2 in a fully crafted jungle environment.....It would be quite possible to make a second Korean war or a Chinese invasion of Taiwan using the basic H&E framework, essentially you'd be making changes similar to those activated by the [bhcw] tag (sound files, new models & textures, revised string files etc.), but focussed on your particular theme. PS - My recommendation to anyone interested in 'Heaven & Earth' is to make a seperate CM:SF2 install (thus giving you a seperate z folder).....The current H&E mod weighs in at just under 5gb, which is quite a lot to be moving around every time you fancy a quick trip to the jungle!

They leapfrog with Advance too, but in Assault they will make much more of an effort to find cover & shoot back. The Next step up is Max Assault, where the units will stop moving and engage any targets they have LOS to, movement will not resume until those targets have been eliminated (and when they do resume, they'll often do it at a crawl, which is irritating).

How are M20 Armored Cars Used?
Sgt.Squarehead replied to Andrew Kulin's topic in Combat Mission Final Blitzkrieg
IIRC M20s were most commonly found as utility vehicles in tank destroyer battalions and I believe they also found use transporting forward observers.....Neither job should involve getting shot at. The M8 Greyhound is a recon vehicle.....That should only get shot at once. If it survives it should hide and call up a Jumbo or some Hellcats. -

Will Russia Attack Ukraine in September?
Sgt.Squarehead replied to Armorgunner's topic in Combat Mission Black Sea
Given our changing climate, Russia's looking like an increasingly attractive spot: https://www.propublica.org/article/the-big-thaw-how-russia-could-dominate-a-warming-world?utm_source=pocket-newtab-global-en-GB Of course that couldn't be a factor in NATO's persistent belligerence.....Could it? -

Just started fiddling with my OSIRIS stuff for the first time in ages. One day I'll hack a proper scenario or two out of that concept, but I made a few errors when creating it that make building a decent scenario a chore (basically I have to remove & replace all the units on one side, or both sides if I'm going for the scenario that I would really like to build). -

The Assault AI Order is often a better choice if there is uncertainty about enemy presence IMHO, but no designer can cover every eventuality.
