  1. That mass produced armour is very interesting indeed, but it's far from the only up-armouring done to the Sherman.....As the picture I posted shows, there was a lot of improvisation. I'll check Hunnicutt & report back. EDIT: Hunnicutt confirms the mantlet armour was taken from a Panther: Hunnicutt, 'Pershing - A History of The Medium Tank T-20 Series', pp.28.
  2. No argument with that @MikeyD, indeed I suspect more than a few Shermans that already had 3600 AA Mounts may have received extra guns at more or less the same time, I've certainly seen several Shermans with both a .50cal and a .30cal, but I couldn't tell you what their specific turret configurations were without checking. Not sure what level these modifications would be authorised at, but I know a man who would be, so I'll ask him when I get a chance.....My guess would be battalion maybe with companies or even platoons adopting a particular modification strategy, but that is only a guess.
  3. You are (wilfully IMHO) reading too much into my statement fella. I can't see any other way it could have been done, it's been the same since Stalingrad TBH.....Urban warfare sucks for everyone, especially the civilians trapped in the combat zone. My sympathies lie with those civilians and with the poor blighters who get to clear up the mess.....We have some idea of what that involves in Mosul (it's horrendous) as there is a good amount of reporting from the city. News from Raqqah on the other hand is rather thin on the ground, but based on information like the above it's unlikely to be good. End of comment. No attributions of guilt or blame. Capiche?
  4. It works OK on a 'Quick' move if the going is reasonably good and if you have the space/range for it to be effective, wouldn't fancy it in a small muddy field though, the direction changes might be a bit unfortunate!
  5. I haven't seen the whole thing (seen most of it in clips by now though).....Not my cup of tea really, but it put some money in Bovingon's coffers as I understand it, so overall I have to approve. It's also brought a lot of people into scale modelling (my other indoor hobby) which is cool, even if it does mean that we get to spend a lot of time explaining to newcomers that they can't build both 'Fury' and an accurate WWII US Sherman in the same model.
  6. For the benefit of current & future players of 'Ash Al Dababir' & 'Al Hutumah'.....If you meet your objectives and the map doesn't look any worse than this: That's a victory. Poor Mosul!
  7. Which begs the question.....Just how bad is the damage in Raqqah? US Army M177s were a major contributor in turning Mosul into this: So if the USMC fired even more ammo into Raqqah......
  8. And on that cheery note! I clearly had a few too many pre-conceived notions about how the new TOE might work.....Projecting my hopes I guess. Still enthusiastic to see the new game, just a bit deflated.....Please god let them have access to Breach Teams, to suggest they don't know how to blow stuff up would be a bit much!
  9. This makes the stowage position pretty clear (but note that while these tanks clearly have the stowed gun they also have all round vision cupolas, which means they probably did not have a 3600 AA MG mount as I shall explain a little later in this post): As for the 3600 AA MG mount, this may help (76mm T-23), notice the position of the mg & orientation of the hatches (labelled 'REVOLVING HATCH DOOR') and compare with the winter camo example in the first picture, also note the stowage pintle at the rear of the turret labelled 'CAL .50 MOUNT': Some more examples showing the cupola rotated to various angles (on a few varieties of Sherman, but it works the same on all of them): The exception to this rule comes generally with the late war variants with a true all round vision cupola and oval loader's hatch.....This is the sole arrangement with a fixed pintle that I can think of off the top of my head (I should add that the same goes for both 75mm & 76mm turrets with this hatch configuration) : However 76mm T-23 turrets produced even later in the run replaced the oval loader's hatch with the older cupola and thus the 3600 mount returns: Hope this finally clears things up.
  10. Took a while to find a 75mm tank with a stowed gun.....But here you go, same deal, both a .50cal and a 3600 MG mount: Can you see them now?
  11. How many times do I have to explain the same thing on one forum? There is no such thing as a forward mounting or a rearward mounting on the VAST MAJORITY of Shermans.....The circular surround of the split-hatch commander's cupola (also later used as a loader's hatch on some 76mm T-23 turrets) which supports the .50cal pintle mount rotates through 3600. There is also a stowage position for the gun at the rear of the turret, it was usually covered by a tarp when stowed, so its presence might not be apparent to someone who doesn't know what they are looking at. This Sherman has both a .50cal and a 3600 MG mount: Can you see them?
  12. That would be a reasonable estimation IMHO, perhaps more towards the final months of the war (they certainly become increasingly common in photos). To be fair I'd have said it was more about PAK-40s & Panzerfausts than Panthers.
  13. I had issues with Webroot where the games ran fine but locked my system up solid on exit (since globally fixed by Webroot Tech Support).
  14. We do also listen to what you say, but we can only do so many things! I know you like bigger maps and the more I work with them the less I like the stock CM:A maps (the villages are just wrong), so I've taken the biggest map in CM:A (the one with the river valley and the east-west highway) extended it to 1.2km x 1.6km, removed all the buildings, walls, flavour objects, vegetation and brush and remodelled most of the contours. I'm in the process of rebuilding it based on photos of the Korengal Valley and also doing some experimenting at the same time (I've just spent quite a while discovering that you can't make a diagonal-tile infantry-only ford across CM:A water).
  15. My money is on Defender (it actually removed my CM:FI .exe).....Maybe disable Defender start the game and see what happens. If it cures the problem create an exception for the whole folder that the CM .exe resides in and restart Defender. It so is!
  16. This is something I've been trying to clear up in my own head, maybe you can clarify for me. Is the 20% chance applied to the whole unit all or nothing, or is it applied to separate sub-units within the main force individually? I'm guessing it's the former. Presumably you can mitigate the all or nothing nature by breaking up your core into company sized chunks, but this will mess up C2 in larger than company sized operations.
  17. Take one to a shopping mall.....Pretty sure you'll have short term fire superiority more or less anywhere (maybe not Texas). Keep in mind this is ISIS we are talking about.
  18. Buddy of mine's building this one in 1/35 in the Sherman GB:
  19. And keep in mind it's Mosul.....Utterly wrecking some of it has to happen, or it just wouldn't be. Poor Mosul!
  20. No worries fella.....It will be what it will be, I guess.
  21. Fair comment mate, not trying to get at you, but you need to understand that there's no such thing as casually knocking up a scenario for these games, let alone a campaign.....It staggers me the speed that some of the guys ( @dragonwynn ) can work at, but we all lead different lives and have different amounts of free time (and patience).
