I have done a complete reworking of this campaign to get it to where I originally envisioned it to be. The  units involved are the same however I reworked the German and Russian OOB's as well as correcting the mess that was the Russian AI. The Germans have a been scaled back some in strength by removing 1 platoon of Tigers and the Soviets have gotten a small boost in some of their unit stats to make them a bit more stubborn. This should make for a more balanced campaign. I also reworked the briefings a little as well as the graphics.

This was my first attempt at a campaign and since I feel i am a little better I felt like this one needed a redo.

I also included the necessary mod files from Umlauts factory mod that models the water tower for those who do not have his full mod downloaded. Just put the mod folder in your data z folder and the water tower should show up in Ponyri now.

For those who have played or are planning to give it a try please delete the old mess and try this one out. I feel it will be a much better experience.

rocketman reacted to dragonwynn in CMRT Mini-Campaign: The Hill
The Hill is a 3 battle mini-campaign of a semi-historical action of the 6. SS Panzergrenadier Regiment (Totenkopf) during August, 1943 near the Mius River. The regiment Totenkopf is tasked with holding Hill 203.4 southeast of the town of Marinovka against the assault by the 40th Guards Rifle Division during the 3rd, 4th and 5th of August.

Under the command of Sturmbannfuhrer Hansen your orders are to hold the hill at all costs with the resources available until relief arrives.

Very little intel is available so you must allocate your forces and anticipate where the attacks will be concentrated. The setup zone allows for you to reposition all forces available except for the command bunkers and associated support units at the very top of the hill. Choose carefully in your positioning and consider having a reaction force available if things get "exciting".

This campaign is designed with the latest game version and is playable from the German side only. Due to the map size and units involved it may play slowly on older systems. It is designed primarily as a infantry engagment though armor will play a role for both sides.

The campaign showcases tagged mods from Vein and Umlaut. All the required mods and tags are included in the download. Simply put the mod folder in your data z directory and the .cam file in your campaign directory.

Make sure to read all the briefings as they drive the storyline as well as information for each scenario.

The entire campaign takes place on a single map that is my first map creation attempt. However in my infinite wisdom the map was 95% completed when I realized my orientation was wrong. So during the campaign ignore the compass. North is south and east is west so let the imagination juices flow.

I hope you enjoy the campaign and any comments or suggestions are welcome on this thread.

Units involved in the campaign are as follows:

    Germans (Totenkopf)

    1. 6.SS Panzergrenadier Regiment
    2. 3.SS Panzer Aufklarung Abt.
    3. 3.SS Panzer Pioneer Kompanie
    4. II/SS Panzer Regiment 3

    Russians

    1. 40th Guards Rifle Division
    2. Elements of the 37th Guards Tank Brigade

rocketman got a reaction from Bulletpoint in The Titanium Bunker
After running into concrete bunker behaviour that seemed odd I did a test with MG bunkers between 40-500 m from M4 Shermans, either on level ground as the bunker or on a gentle slope. I have only run the test once, but some observations so far (and shouldn't be considered full conclusions just yet):
Shermans only fire HE (not AP) Almost all hits are low of the embrasure, making penetrating shots very rare, even from 40 m Even when HE get penetrating shots, it doesn't kill the enire crew or even none of them. Wouldn't a blast like that in a confined space kill everyone instantly? Crew behaviour appears like this: one man is standing, manning the MG, the rest kneel below the embrasure. The only kills I saw was direct hits on the guy manning the MG - no matter how many hits they take, they never cower, no matter their state Since the main gun fires single shots, and those rarely penetrate, "Target Light" is actually much more effective as the bullits have a much greater chance of penetrating and hitting the standing guy, who is replaced by the next, and by the next and so on until the crew is gone. Even at a long distance "Target Light" is prefered The only way to knock out the bunker from the front is a direct HE hit on the MG itself, which causes the crew to abandon

Good point akd - makes sense.

I made some more tests, so this is a revision of above mentioned observations.
Shermans do fire both HE or AP and tend to shoot either/or consecutively. Not sure if it is due to distance. HE seems pretty useless. Since penetrations are rare, crew casualties are low. And even though they get blasted repetedly they do not cower, which seems odd. Even if you park a Sherman some 20-30 m straight ahead of a bunker, they are no less accurate or get more penetrating shots. Indications rather to the opposite, they miss the bunker completely. When using Target, it fires both HE/AP/MG so it is possibly the better alternative after all. But not all of the time. AP shells can take out a bunker with one shot. Too bad we can't choose which ammo to use, as HE seems less effective. Hits tend to appear in clusters, which indicates that the gunners aren't especially good at adjusting their aim (see below) Clusters - one good aim, one way too low.

    Clusters - all too low.

    Single AP-shot takes out bunker.

How about making the camera come down to soldier eye level? It would make it so much easier to get an overview of the battlefield, and make me feel like I'm standing there myself..

    So here you go instread:

Go get Gran Turismo 5 and then you can race the Schwimmwagen all day long. Heck, you can even paint it pink, or silver, or whatever floats your boat (pun intended).

Great looking roads you're making for the Bulge operation.

I was a bit intrigued by this one, so decided to run a test:  I set up four outhouses, and put SU-122s in two of them, and a BA-64 in a third.  I then put four Stugs in various locations within 30-50 meters from the outhouses, with some facing directly towards and some away from them.

The problem is readily reproducible--one of the SUs was visible, but the other, and the BA64, were not, even at these close ranges.  Also, the Stugs could not target the outhouses which were hiding the vehicles.  A Stug firing area fire at the base of the outhouse was able to destroy the BA64, although it never saw it.  Interestingly, the BA64 could not see anything from "inside" the outhouse, even the Stug 30 meters to its front.

I tried to attach the scenario file but the forum would not let me attach a btt file.  There is also a smaller outhouse among the flavor objects, perhaps someone should try that next?

rocketman reacted to c3k in When should BFC start to develop a CMx3 engine ?
    Aurelius,

Please re-read my post. Am I defending BFC? Perhaps. I was trying to let Wiggum15 know why his posts don't carry any weight.

Am I mad if someone calls me a fanboy? Not at all.

Am I a fanboy? Maybe you think so.

    Shrug.

As a counterpoint, look at Lacroix's post, just above. He quotes me and adds a "lol". Why? Because he does not have a rational counterargument. Lacroix is another one to whom I give no credence. His posting history has caused this. Criticism is acceptable, even desirable to improve the game. The negativity expressed by several, like Wiggum15 and Lacroix is counterproductive.

Back to your point, Aurelius.  I will not stand by silently when I see posts which are counterfactual. I try to reply to posts with the same level of respect and maturity as they are made. Look up my posting history. Find where I say this game cannot be improved. Find where I do not support ideas to improve the game. There is a world of difference between trying to improve something and just tearing it down. Yes, this forum can get defensive against inflammatory posts. However, this forum also allows those inflammatory posts...for the most part.

Irrational, immature, insulting, and inflammatory posts should not be accepted. Defending BFC? No. I am defending a game system I enjoy. I will not passively watch a few malcontents poison a forum without pointing out their falsehoods and distortions.

    Regards,
    Ken

Edited to add: As a beautiful counterpoint to everything Wiggum15, Lacroix, et al., have posted, look at this: http://community.battlefront.com/topic/119875-worrying-60mm-mortar-behavior/page-1

We have a criticism of behavior which is specific and it includes what behavior was expected. A member of BFC's team checks it, finds it has merit, and posts an internal report about it. And then provides feedback to the OP about it. This is just one of hundreds of threads which prove how distorted are the statements posted by Wiggum15 et alia.

Wiggum15 - are you at all capable of rationale and mature debate? From your previous posts it does appear as if you are going out your way to appear both irrational and immature. TBH your attitude and the way you interact with other posters comes across as hostile and combative. You wonder why other posters then react in the way you do?

rocketman reacted to Bootie in The Scenario Depot III
    Hello Gentlemen

I bring you exciting news of the new Scenario Depot III which has been funded by The Few Good Men.  As we all know The Scenario Depot II was the go to place for Scenario downloads with its most successful period being from the mid-90's to the early 00's for the CMX1 series of games.  Unfortunately it was never updated to encompass the CMX2 series of games but all that is about to change.  I introduce to you The Scenario Depot III.

The new site is a community wide project and despite being hosted on The Few Good Men servers membership of The FGM is not required.  We have reached a stage where the site is pretty much finished and all that remains to be tested now is its load bearing capabilities.

The Scenario Depot III is the place to upload your completed play tested scenarios for the enjoyment of the CMx2 community and I'm asking if you scenario designers out there would do me the honour of starting to upload your scenarios to the database as a stress test exercise.  If all goes well The Scenario Depot III will be up and running henceforth.

    The site is available HERE

Please read 'The About The Scenario Depot III' section and then go to 'Upload A File' to go through the simple process of getting your scenario into our database awaiting front page post upload.

I would like to thank Gary Krockover the original designer of The Scenario Depot II and The Proving Grounds for his permission to launch the next era of the sites catering for the new games released by Battlefront in the CMX2 series.

The site covers all CMX2 games [Afghanistan, Shock Force, Battles for Normandy, Fortress Italy, Red Thunder , Black Sea] and has areas waiting to be opened for the Bulge games forthcoming release.

As well as scenarios and campaigns the site also offers the capability of uploading user designed maps for players to download.

At present we have just the one map uploaded so please pop over and start adding your content and if you wish to donate towards the endeavour there is a link at the bottom of the right hand column for you generous folk out there.  Donations will go towards the programmes required to get The Proving Grounds up and running which is phase 2 of the project.  I look forward to seeing your work being submitted.

    Thanks for reading.

    Bootie
