Megalon Jones reacted to Ultradave in Soviet Formations
There are choices in the TOE for several different kinds of Soviet battalions, both motorized infantry and armor. There are Reserve armor battalions that are equipped with T-55s an T-62s compared to the frontline ones with T-64s and T-62, and two varieties of those with 3 tanks per PLT or 4. For the motorized battalions, different selections of BMP equipped or BTR equipped, although they aren't specifically listed as reserve. That's taking one setup example from a 1982 quick battle selection. think you should be able to create whatever you want with all the combinations, as long as it falls in the years covered.
Is that what you were looking for with your question @Megalon Jones?

Megalon Jones reacted to c3k in CM Cold War - Beta AAR - NO The_Capt or Bil
Gotta add this: the period depicted is awesome. Meaning, literally, filling one with awe. The amount of arty and air and the damage they can inflict, as well as the numbers involved, and the Soviet T-64 vs the M48/early M60, new ATGMs, makes every encounter a very touch-and-go event. If you get cocky...you die. And once the dying starts, it just keeps going.
Look at how any vehicle spotted in this AAR has died. Sure, they're just BMPs and M113s, but the accuracy and deadly effect of munitions...and the number of shooters...is what makes this a well-balanced period. Soviet numbers are offset by the assumption that they'd be attacking. The equipment is balanced: it's up to the user to make the difference.
DPICM must be seen to be believed.
On this AAR: it seems like Bil is falling for The_Capt's razzle-dazzle. Of course, of anyone, Bil will suss it out soon enough and be in a very balanced position to parry it. (At least, that's my assumption. )

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like we can expect both main forces to run into each other in a nice clash of steel that the Capt might win due to his overwhelming firepower advantage. My read of the coming manoeuvres:

I'm not sure Bil is expecting a large push over the southern part of the valley, so it'll be interesting to see if he sniffs it out in time.

Thanks to @Pete WenmanI can link the pictures to places in the map. My guess is that you're preparing to advance on the town with your right flank, and also covering your back. You're moving your armor to what to me looks like a very safe FUP. It also incidentally would be a good position for your armor to be part of a KZ. If I am not wrong, you're moving them to what looks like a hamlet with a few buildings and a treeline, with possible keyholed battle positions. Not sure who are the dismounts on your right flank, but I presume they are taking with them their Dragon missiles.

Provoke the enemy to attack your ATGM assets and use the armor from concealed positions to ambush them from the flank. I suspect at the end of the hunt move your ATGM's on top of the APC's will be followed by a reverse move. The armor has a natural approach route on the right to point 401. I see an FO did he call for Air support or artillery?

Hi all, really looking forward to this module. I served in BAOR from 1983 - 1988, so a little after this initial release. From my time at least i would say one of the main concerns was NBC warfare, not so much Nuclear at this stage but definitely Biological and Gas. I would estimate we spent about 80% of the time whilst on Exercise in our NBC suits.
Nobody really knew what was going to happen, but initially there would of been a big fear of Chemical warfare, it would be good if this could be simulated somehow. i know at the time that any smoke, cloud, mist etc i saw and i would of had my mask on pronto.
Training in NBC gear was extremely tiring and cumbersome, especially in the Summer months so even if reduced visibility, higher exhaustion etc could be modelled.
I'm on the right in the picture below, taken about 85, with a typical bit of squaddie humour 😉. I see if i can find anything more relevant, i think i still have the old 'Survive To Fight' pamphlet in the loft.
cheers all

No, the missile just gravitates to your mark so knowing the distance to the target and the missile speed you can firstly aim higher then lower the mark to the target. The missile will follow. The technique was actually developed early on to avoid entangling (and tearing off) the control wires in bushes that grow near the straight line to the target. So with BMP-2 you can go "hull-down" behind the bushes and yet launch the missile. And your skill will be your sensor

Gives an idea of what the NBC procedures were like for UK Forces, i can't emphasise enough how much time was spent on Exercise in BAOR (83 - 88) in some kind of NBC readiness, and carrying out these drills on a regular basis night or day. It was common place for our CO to order a Gas drill at some ungodly time of the morning just as you pulled into laager following a route march or relocation.
Cheers all

The sandbox element just means that the game itself is not bound to a specific narrative. The campaigns share a common back story, but a lot of the scenarios have their own background.
In reality, a Cold War gone hot war would have only lasted on the order of months, not years. Instead of limiting the scope of the game to, say, March-July 1979, it instead covers 79-82. But it does not assume a war would last that long. It allows the player to choose what year they want to set up a scenario in and go for it. Plus, it allows the player to compare how the same scenario changes when newer (or older) equipment is used instead.

I don't want to jinx things but I see more than 4500 views and not one down vote. That's almost unprecedented.

The Fulda Gap sector really was the responsibility of US V Corps, with just a small number of German units involved.
It would make sense for German units (on both sides) to come with an expansion covering battles farther to the north. And there's the British Army of the Rhine sector as well.

@Bil Hardenberger How concerned are you about the M60A1's performance against Soviet Armor? What kind of Armor (if any) do you expect to run into?
