we used to have shoot and scoot in CMx1.
this topic talks about how to use pause and movement order to setup a "poor man's " shoot n scoot in CMx2
it is very unfortunately all the pic are gone.

    and
in modern battle shoot and scoot will keep your casualty low.

Here is an example, a two men infantry team spotted a Javelin. They run towards the BMP-3 and transfer the information to the BMP-3 commander verbally (turned out)
BMP-3 issued a couple waypoints combine with pause order. The purpose of that?  Fire air burst HE to the target then get back to the safety before the Javelin ATGM can finish the lock, then reload and repeat this process.

    or

an ATGM team rush into the fire position, fire the missile then running towards the safety before the enemy retaliate with HE (this is a PBEM game, so I know my opponent is very likely to use area fire next turn)

Don't bother with trying other maps, because the result will be the same. The game is hardcoded to not allow the withdraw command when you're in the ground floor of a building.
This change was deliberately added a couple of patches ago in order to prevent the AI from running out of buildings when under fire. Before the change, it was often possible to eliminate enemies from buildings simply by suppressing them, and they would eventually trigger the fall back behaviour, which works for the AI just like for the human player.
The AI troops would then run out of the house and often straight into the street and get shot down easily. It made it too easy to clear buildings. And since they were not able to improve the AI behaviour, they instead just disabled the function when inside buildings.

Chibot Mk IX reacted to Centurian52 in How close to the target did Soviet motor rifle squads dismount?
Oh, and I very nearly forgot. Another factor in the Soviet preference for no dismounting, or dismounting as late as possible, is that they expected a nuclear battlefield. Vehicles are NBC protected (at least the ones designed during the Cold War). And while individual infantrymen also have NBC gear, it's still best for them to spend as little time as possible outside. In fact this might be a bigger factor in the "don't dismount unless you have to" attitude than the desire to maintain a high operational tempo.
We often forget about the nuclear aspect because nukes aren't represented in Combat Mission (they are obviously a bit outside the scope of a tactical sim, since even tactical nukes are probably more operational than tactical assets (though it's possible that the effects of a tactical nuke could fit in a CMCW scenario (especially given that CMCW scenarios tend to be larger by map size than other CM games), and still leave some scenario to play (infantry hiding in buildings, forests, and trenches would be able to survive much closer to the blast center than infantry standing in the open, and armored vehicles would be able to survive even closer) so perhaps it would make some sense to include the occasional tactical nuke in our indirect fire assets (you don't even need to account for radiation effects, because those don't manifest until well past the scope of a CM scenario))). But of course they played a big role in the assumptions that Cold War doctrine was designed around.
I don't know if this was part of the consideration for choosing the timeframe of the base game. But the game's timeframe of 1979-1982 is probably the period that had the best chance of seeing both sides just use conventional arms. Any earlier than this and the US lacked confidence in the ability of its conventional forces to stop the Soviets, and viewed them more as a tripwire for destroying the Soviets with tactical nukes. Much later than this timeframe and the Soviets lose confidence in their ability to overrun NATO defenses with conventional forces alone, and start depending far more heavily on the use of tactical nukes in their attack plans.

Put the SS squad in the open , one Soviet SMG squad area fire (I have to reduce the SMG squad to 1, because SMGs are OP even at 180m distance, with two SMG squads, there will be no survivor after turn 1)

So, I issued the withdraw order, same as test 2, pinned down text disappear although the suppression level is still there.

And the remaining survivor of the SS squad successfully pull out at the end of the turn 2.

    So, see the difference?

You may have a point as I remember someone else mentioned the same thing before ( withdraw order = a fast order). If it is true then the whole issue become “the ground floor is a no way out death trap.” I can do some test and hopefully get a conclusion tomorrow.

Meanwhile, here is a test that proves the ground floor is a trap.
    See test #1
Put a German SS pioneer sqd in the ground floor. 180m away 3 x Soviet SMG sqd area fire the ground floor. So at the end the turn (28:00) the SS sqd was pinned down. Since I cannot issue a withdraw order, I put a fast order to get them outside the building.

    But 27:00, they didn't move

    Same as 26:00, 25:00, 24:00.

Not until 23:00 when Sov SMG squad running out of ammunition , did the SS squad finally pull out

    *******************************************************************************************************************************************

    On the contrary
    Test #2
Put SS squad on the upper floor, same configuration , 3 x SMG sqd area fire the upper floor at 180m away. At the end of the turn the SS sqd was pinned down.

I issued the withdraw order , drag it outside the building (note that as soon as I hit withdraw, the pinned down text disappeared, but the suppression level is still there) , hit start.

In less than 5 seconds , the first pixeltruppen run down the stair, then followed by 2nd, 3rd. By the end of the turn, everyone gets out of building and is out of SMG sqds’ LOS completely.

Wow, in my *coughs* long CM career (well not quite 3 years actually 😉) I have never used those buttons.  If I set a pause it has been in the orders phase using the options to the right.  Thanks for pointing this out, wonder whether it would have made a difference.
As for the mod, it looks like JuJu's UI mod (now in the care of Ithikial).  I am also using this and don't like the look of the games without it.

    --------------------------------------------------------------
Mini map pack for Battlefront Combat Mission Red Thunder
    --------------------------------------------------------------

    Description:

Three maps in Estonia one in Latvia.
All the maps in this mini pack are based on google earth satellite images, photos and also street view when available, not historical maps. So obviously these locations were not identical during ww2. I however tried to downgrade the type of roads when I thought it made sense, on rare occasions removed a couple of houses or farms here and there but for the most part they're as accurate as I could make them.
Some have attack or meeting engagement setups, some are raw (no deployment zones or objectives). The latter will require a little bit of work to be playable.
I tried as much as possible to frame the maps so they're versatile and can be used in various ways: both for meeting engagements and attacks. But there are also usually several possible setups that you could use i.e different directions for the attack with potential objectives and road in all cardinal directions. There is often not just one single way to play them.
It should be noted that most of these maps, except Talvikese which is fairly open with rural terrain, are basically dirt roads going through forests, marshy ground and lakes. So it can be very easy if played as attacks or assaults to block the roads with anti tank mines depending on the deployment zones. So you could just have infantry battles, have an agreement with your opponent to limit the usage of mines or even modify the terrain a little bit by replacing marshy ground with mud or something else where needed. Or just play them as is. It is up to you.
Feel free to use them for whatever you want. Simply credit me and provide a link to this thread.

    The maps:

1/ Estonia - Kapera (raw map)

    size: 1408 X 1072m
    type: forest/rural
    60km west of Pskov
    google earth coordinates: 57°46'12.40"N 27°19'33.80"E

2/ Estonia - Kahri Koorvere road

    size: 1168 X 1184m
    type: forest and lakes
    35km south east of Tartu
    google earth coordinates: 58° 5'19.20"N 26°58'28.02"E
Includes both a raw map and a version with a red attack setup. The map with the attack setup is slightly cropped on the northern edge for gameplay reasons so I decided to also include the original one.

    3/ Estonia - Talvikese (ME)

    size: 2688 X 2832m
    type: open/rural
    20km south of Tartu
    google earth coordinates:  58°12'3.76"N  26°49'7.02"E

4/ Latvia - Courland - Lemzere (raw map)

    size: 1776 X 1008m
    type: marshy forest and lake
    55km south west of Tukums
    google earth coordinates: 56°36'15.63"N  22°34'36.97"E

The above would be the options for "Close mounted, dismount on or near position".

When there was "an obstacle to mounted movement" or "strong defensive positions that cannot be suppressed", then you're dismounting, before closing with and destroying:

    Many thanks for this.
Suyi's analysis is excellent, although since my foreign language skills (beyond tres mal high school French) are limited to ordering  beer and finding a WC in 3 dozen countries, I mainly check in on his English Twitter feed.
While house experts here like to beat me up over doomsaying (and should feel free to do so), I continue to check 'the other side of the hill' for early indicators or hints of improvement. It's too important not to.

There is only one industrial power in the world today capable of ramping production of low tech artillery shells and other low-to-medium tech consumables within 6 month timeframes, and it's China.  Russia, no way.
I'm not in the miltech business, but I have watched China basically eat the entire global (high tech but mature) wind turbine OEM sector alive over the last 5 years.
No foreign maker competes today unless they put their branding on a 95%+ Chinese built product, that is (outside the West) installed (and likely maintained by) Chinese EPC engineers and technicians all the way down to welders, using Chinese construction equipment and hand tools. Vertically integrated.
Let us not fool ourselves about their capabilities to ramp up production of pretty much any mature tech by orders of magnitude in periods measured in months, given a directive from Beijing.
They are well beyond the cheap knockoffs stage now, although they'll certainly cut corners, if they can make money off it (and not get shot in a stadium).

IMHO, the 'European Slavic' countries, using US and EU capital and knowhow, and where most people still make things (experienced engineers and machinists and, sorry, plumbers are still available), need to become (one of the) Western alternatives to China ASAP, first in the heavy military and then more broadly in the wider heavy manufacturing sector.
But it is not clear (again IMHO) whether the 'old West' business sector, even old 'MIC' fixtures like Boeing and GE, have not already gone too far up their own McKinseyized/ financialized/Black Rock ESG activist posteriors to be more of a help than a barrier in aiding this transition.
Let's just say it, this needs to be a government led effort and let's face it, that's Team America (**** yeah!).

    Indeed, these are poor examples:
The first link's description suggests that a very old manufacturing plant was simply being renovated. The second link really refutes the main point.
The topic of this article was that the RU MOD had ammunition difficulties in Syria (and Ukraine). They ordered extra ammunition, but it does not look like a significant shift in RU MOD policy.

1,   Russia formed 10 division from 2016-22. Usually people believe this expansion is a Shoigu’s office politics tricks , to appease the Russian army officer corps (because Serdyukov's reform kills a lot of promotion opportunities for the young officers) . I am not sure how strong the evidence is because usually it doesn’t tell too much if the market of ammunition + special chemicals increased 23% revenue from 2015 to 2016.  But I have never heard any other similar opinion claims Putin prepare this “SMO” as early as 2016.

To the contrary, it was recon by death, conducted by them. So the Russian excuse for forward observers could at least pin down the Ukrainian positions to grid square or two. I do hope they feel honored by being allowed to sacrifice their lives for the Czar in this manner. I suspect they would have lived a lot longer calling the Ukrainian surrender hot line though. I suspect the penalty for insufficient enthusiasm involves mine clearance by beating the ground with hammers.
