One element that has genuinely changed for the worse is the loss of ChrisND, and his twitch streams. Those were superb content, both in terms of engaging with the player base and highlighting upcoming releases. I can't make a claim that that kind of presentation is cost effective, but it's certainly missed.

The helmets of the North African troops were partly color mustard.
the factory helmet had a khaki color at the beginning of the war however the liberation army repainted its helmets in dark green and a part of the manufacturing had an aluminum crest and the paints peeled

Can I please enquire @BFCElvis - now that the R2V tome has been released, will we see some attention directed into squashing the bocage infantry TacAI bug in CMBN at some point in the near future?  cheers!

I'd tag him and see if he has a copy on his hard drive.  The thing was released very shortly after CMSF was released and as a result does not cover any of the new features that started to be introduced with the WW2 titles such as the map overlay, AI triggers, AI target orders and unit facings.  While it may come across as a criticism, it certainly isn't meant to be as I found it very useful in the early days, but it amounts to a basic illustrated talk through of editor features.  If you have spent any time at all in the editor I would suggest that you probably won't get much out of it.  The Sherriff of Oosterbeek Scenario Design Manual is broader in scope and comes bundled with all of the titles these days.
Blatant self-promotion requires me to point you to my scenario design tutorial:

Hats off to the BFC crew; another great new title.  My favorite added feature: a tie between the French and the Indian Army.  (And I love that both have different uniform options to toggle between).
Thank you for bringing us such a content-rich multi-module Italian campaign!

Very kind of you, but I already tried that establishment almost 371 years ago, and found the shave to be . . . excessive.  Pro tip I learned: do not frequent a barber who uses an axe.
By the way, isn't Whitehall very near Westminster Hall? I believe your hairstyle was seen there for many years (displayed on a pike, if memory serves).

I'll be working on one after I get to the SF2 British uniforms I didn't finish last Spring. There are a lot more option with skins and whatnot with the release of R2V.
Edit: Loaded my old one form years ago into R2V and it works!  But this is a mod to the British uniforms.  Need to do it with the French.

I don't know if other people are still having crashes but I think I might have found a quick and easy fix for the CTDs so I thought I'd post in this old thread in case it is useful for other people.
I got a new PC last summer with windows 10 and the game has kept crashing on me with a CTD with an uncanny regularity ever since. The game has always been rock solid and super stable before. It wasn't the end of the world because I only experienced these crashes after 2 hours, 2 hours and a half of play. But it was every session and it was bugging me a little.
I tried all the suggestions in this thread, toying with nvidia settings, having the exe in admin mode, excluding it from the anti virus etc. But no luck. I was about to try different drivers for my graphic card as a last resort because I don't particularly like updating these all the time just to gain 1-2 fps when all the other games I play work fine.
Then I right clicked on the game exe to access the properties and set it to launch in windows 8 compatibility mode. I have tested it for a week to make sure it wasn't just a fluke. I have had zero crashes since I did that.

I think there were holdouts.  I still recall back in the 1970's serving beside an officer from the Royal Tank Regiment in liaison with a US Army tank battalion who often called the M-60 tank's 105mm main gun a 25 pounder.

Thanks, very interesting. Much of it reminds me of situations I've seen play out in Combat Mission. From the part where they manage to cross the road under fire, to especially the bit about the two-man "scout team" that was maybe sent out only to draw fire and make the enemy reveal themselves. Thanking my lucky stars I grew up in peacetime.

If you're travelling along a secure route that the enemy could not have eyes on then go as fast as you want. If you're trying to cross killing ground then you've got decisions to make.
Awhile ago I was tinkering with an old CMSF2 huge map night scenario for fun. Originally the Red AI side would rush headlong towards my side and get slaughtered. I tried adjusting the AI so the Red side cautiously leap-frogged from position to position providing overwatch to the moving unit, with time between movement orders for them to sit and surveil ahead of them. That altered AI plan beat the pants off me. It went from blindly barreling in my direction to getting kills against me the full width of the map.

I recall discussion that it does not matter what speed one orders vehicles to move - they will automatically slow down to move at an "appropriate speed" - ie like when crossing fences etc.  It sounds like that one could simply order vehicles to move FAST at all times since they will slow down automatically as needed.   That was good to know as I was wasting much time putting in waypoints with SLOW moves every time a vehicles would have to cross a fence or bush, or even RR tracks.
However, there has also been discussion that one should drive SLOW over some terrain -  like marshy ground to reduce % of bogging/immobilizing.  Any clarification on "safe" vehicular movement orders would be welcomed.

Ahh, yeah. I forgot that they changed things with tags when I created that. You'll need to add a space then  [snow] at the end of the file name.
Ex: A winter background picture becomes "portrait german infantry [snow]" minus the quotation marks.
You will actually be able to have two of each portrait in the mods folder now without them canceling each other out.
    portrait german infantry
    portrait german infantry [snow]
The snow background will only show up in scenarios where there is snow on the ground. Any other portrait named portrait german infantry will show up when there isn't snow.
If you wanted to use portraits with say the flag background, all the time, you'd have to make two copies of them and add the [snow] tag to one (as above).
I will make sure to address this when I get around to updating the FB mod to my new style. And will make sure it's all set in the FI & RT module mods.

Additionally, in olden times when pots and kettles were used over the open flames of hearth or cooking fires, soot would form on their bottoms and sides.  They would both become blackened so neither could claim to be cleaner or better than the other.

Badger73 reacted to hank24 in How individual weapons were really carried in WW II
Interesting discussion. During my time in the German Bundeswehr, I had the pleasure to use the MG3 often which is very similar to the MG42 (ROF was reduced to less than 1200 rds/min; too much heat and too much ammo to carry forward I heard. The only machine I ever heard of where the performance was reduced). Phantastic piece of engineering, we fired single shots on a bunker target at 600 m - no problem to hit an opening 1 ft x 1/2 ft with the first shot.

Barrel exchange is really made in seconds. The container for the substitute barrel is a cylinder which opens lengthwise to two half cylinders with the barrel lying on one half. Take the asbestos glove, open the barrel arrestor, pull out the hot barrel, lay that into the empty half of the open container, take the cold one , put it in, close the arrestor, recock and fire. We had drills to train that, I would estimate some 10 sec. When I remember correctly, this was required after some 250 rds fired. The same quick exchange was made with the breech block, approximately the same time needed when trained (after 500 rds?).

Against ground targets always short bursts were recommended. Aerial targets were to be fought in long bursts.

Carry and use: In CM, the MG is fired standing and kneeling, something we never did or were trained and it was not part of the field manual for the MG; at least I cannot remember to having seen that. I am convinced, no matter how strong or heavy you are, most of the burst will go upwards into the sky. This piece pushes really hard and steady.

Mostly it is fired prone, the trick is to find some arrest at your feet, push into the two leg support at the front with your shoulder somewhat high, and then lower your body so, that there is a strong pushing tension between your feet and the front support. Then, the MG lies perfectly fixed and does not deviate when fired. Left hand is always at this small hook at the underside of the shoulder piece and pushes that rearwards.

During extended training we had an exercise to advance with five soldiers, one with MG3, and half size targets (head to hip) flipping up suddenly at relatively short distances. There I found at the field manual how to fire the MG from the hip and immediately implemented that. The leather carry belt is actually composed of two parallel belts, as you can see at the photo on the previous page with the soldier carrying it with one hand. This belt is fixed forward at an eye at the centre of gravity, rear end of belt unfixed at pistol grip, split in two and hung around the neck. The right hand takes the pistol grip and the left both legs of the frontal support. The legs are pulled to the left side of the barrel. Now you have a configuration like Vasquez at Alien2. Nice to carry, quick, stable, and precise. I used that at this execise, one short burst at each emerging target, aimed low and pulled up, all targets hit, some ammo left, no other comerade was able even to fire one shot with their G3 assault rifle - quick shooting was never trained.

Besides the old but decent shotgun of my father, this was always my favourite weapon.

Badger73 got a reaction from lsailer in Is there anything that comes close to the CM games?
If I understand your questions correctly; I too have found no other game which captures a low level tactical battlefield gaming experience that comes anywhere close to the Combat Mission games.  As far as future evolution for Battlefront games, while people talk about the "next thing after" the current CMx2 application code, I doubt anything like the imagined CMx3 will be commercially available for the next five years or so.
So, if you don't care for the Graviteam Tactics offerings or Matrix Games "Armoured Brigade", a purchase of any Battlefront CMx2 game will provide you several years of best available WW2 and later tactical war-gaming.  (In other words, "Just shut up and buy, my friend!"  You won't ever regret it . . . . 😁)

So I'm playing around in the editor with a night action. Out of curiosity I was wondering re the stars and their constellations. So I used a phone app I have, which identifies the constellations in the night sky, on the night sky in my scenario (Poland). And it worked - identified the various constellations. How cool is that?!
