  1. To the contrary, it was possible, and happened. The scenario was the first day of Barbarossa. I, as the Soviets, had destroyed most of his units, and had taken all of the flags except the main victory flag on the far side of the bridge. Just before I got to he bridge, he had one of his units blow it, and I lost because that flag was the main victory point. He blew it up just to see if he could. I have retaliated by beating him in about 95% of all scenarios (CMBN + Market Garden, CMRT, and CMBS) we've played since then. I am however magnanimous and will explain what he did wrong that allowed me to crush him, and even what I did wrong that could have caused me to lose. In fact, I even gifted him a copy of Market Garden so I could continue to abuse him. l actually have no problem with a defender blowing a bridge, or a dam, or a dike or something, but I don't agree with the attacker doing it unless it's to stop a defender's reinforcements from out flanking the attacker. Anyway, it was more than a decade ago, and he has paid dearly for his transgression.
  2. Actually, I beg to differ. Perhaps in the CMx2 series, but in the first PBEM H2H I played in CMBB, my opponent used a German Sapper/Pioneer/Engineer unit to blowup the bridge that I had to cross to take the last flag I needed to win. Because of that, I got a loss.
  3. You heard correctly. I'm going to be his driver. I miss my Marines so much I reinstalled my PC version CMSF +Marines on my boot camp Windows 7 drive after my CMSF+Marines, British, and NATO modules failed on my OS 10.13.3 drive and even with all of Steve's help, we couldn't getting it going again. No more 10-"War-fighter" squads (whatever happened to Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen). Solid 13-man Marine Squads that you can split into four fire teams! Lord how I missed them. Waiting breathlessly for CMFS2 to drop! In fact, I started playing CMFI again cause at least that has proper squads.
  4. Sorry about being late to the party, but as I understand it, this tip is basically saying to use "shoot and scoot" when possible. LT. Colonel Abrams ( the commander after whom the M1 Abrams tank is named), used this tactic outside of Nance to stop a superior counter-attacking German armor column. It is a well known maneuver. I don't know how applicable it is to the CMBS battle field though as I haven't used it there yet.
  5. It could actually be caused by your view being too high. Sometimes you're looking down at an angle and don't see that your viewpoint is actually already at the border of the map. The screen will not move back if you're already at the limit of the map. Test it by hitting your 1, 2, or 3 number key to lower your view to see where you actually are.
  6. Well, I still have ALL of my original Avalon Hill Advanced Squad Leader modules except for the last three from the new company, so I would still be able to scratch that itch
  7. Well, I realize this thread and the other one have been specific to Windows OS, but I had the same issue on my Mac Pro. I have the CMSF Bundle (CMSF, Marines, British, and NATO) installed on my Mac. It worked fine in OS 10.12.x until I moved it from its original HD location to a new SSD. After I did that, I got an error message on attempted startup saying to contact the developer. I put in a ticket, and Steve worked with me for a couple of weeks trying to correct the issue, including deleting and downloading again, and running a terminal program that BF support wrote. We failed. Steve finally said that he felt it was related to the old licensing coding and the new Mac OS, and that we would have to wait for the new engine. I haven't been able to play it for almost a year now. It has NOT been due to any lack of effort by Steve or BF though. Sometimes crap just happens. Still waiting patiently though, and just reinstalled my PC version of CMSF and Marines on my Windows 7 side, patched it, and am using that. The game was not made with a 4K monitor in mind though, so it's not playing well with the text.
  8. I must strongly disagree with this comment. I have every CM game and module since CMBO to CMFB except Afganistan. I've had a few major problems tha mainly dealt with game registration. In all cases, Support tried to help, but the solutions didn't work. At that point, the next e-mail was from Steve. Steve stayed with my e-mail string until the issue was corrected, including until late on Christmas Eve on one issue. I haven't had that type of experience with any other software ompany with which I've dealt. Here's a suggestion; reply to the last e-mail, POLITELY, explaining that the issue isn't resolved, and ask why the ticket was closed. Be advised that if you take too long to reply to a response from Support, and they will assume the issue is corrected and close the ticket.
  9. My CMSF developed a problem with registration after I upgraded my MacOS to Sierra (I had also moved it to a new SSD). Steve performed yoeman's service over a number of days and nights trying to find a workaround. Unfortunately, nothing worked and he said I'd have to wait for the upgrade with the new engine. That tells me it shouldn't be too long (hopefully this year).
  10. Speaking of ASL, IIRC a unit that routed couldn't rout toward the enemy unless it was into cover that was a certain distance away from the enemy. Since BF started as the PC version of ASL, you'd think that prohibition would still be in place.
  11. This possible change might also be driven by the planning that all military commands engage in. They tend to plan to fight the last type of war that they fought. When the Marines landed on Guadalcanel, they carried bolt-action, five-round 1903 Springfield rifles (probably model 1903A1, but I'm not sure of that). Not because of the common misconception that the Marines received the left-overs from the Army, but because the Marine command refused to sign on to the M1 when the Ordance Board accepted it. They wanted to keep their rifles with the 1,000 yard range capability and not the lose 400 yards to the "inferior" M1. Interestingly though, soon after the Army landed and Marines saw the higher volume of fire the soldiers could put out with their M1s, individual Marines began "finding" M1s to use (M1903s and M1s used the same 30-06 ammunition). After the Korean Conflict, the U.S. developed the M14 to use the NATO 7.62 round with a 20-round magazine. It was close to the same range as the M1 (intended for long-range fire such as Korean hill top to hill top, remember the last war fought concept) but higher capacity and the ability to add an automatic fire selector switch for automatic riflemen. U.S. troops carried the M14 in Vietnam until the powers determined that a rifleman in a jungle didn't need a rifle with a 600-yard range. Plus, a rifleman could carry almost twice as many rounds (spray and pray to break out of an ambush and such) as the M14. Also, I'm sure the AK-47 had an effect an the design concept. Enter the conflicts in the Middle East. All of a sudden we have longer ranges possible, but more closely-packed urban areas. Do we now design longer range with close combat capabilities such as a bull pup design? Specialized arms for different situations such as modified M14s and M60 machine guns that are still used by some SEAL teams? As far as I know, Marine infantry stil carry the M16 and the Army infantry still carry the M4 because the basic missions of the two services are different, the same reason a Marine squad is 13 Marines, and an Army squad is 9 Soldiers. the bottom line is that we can speculate all day about combat arms and why they might be in consideration, but unless we have access to the design specs and concept behind a request for change, we don't KNOW the reasons behind the possible change.
  12. I'd be very leary of accepting that it can fire a Kornet on the move. Yes, the video shows it doing it, but videos, especially a manufacturer's promotional video is always suspect. Is the Kornet wire-guided or laser beam riding? If it's wire, wouldn't you be running the risk of driving over the wire and breaking or disrupting it? Did you also notice it taking down an attack helicopter with an ATGM? I take the video with a grain of salt.
  13. Ok, I stand corrected. I re-read the write-up and it did say to combine a into larger team. "Assume" has proven true again! Even cooler is the ability of a team behind a building to have men "peeking" around the corners, and the squad spacing. As we used to yell "Spread out! One grenade will get you all."
  14. This confuses me. If you split a squad into three teams, and each team is reduced to one man, you've always been able to recombine those three one-man teams back into the squad. I haven't had the opportunity to try recombining them into another reduced squad or into another reduced platoon. That's what I assumed the combining reduced squads or teams what was all about. Of course, we all know what "assume" does?
  15. Hull down is now a move command, and you can combine shot-up squads. Haven't tried combining casualty-reduced squads from different units though. Biggest bug is there are no Marine Amphibious forces yet?
  16. I had the same problem activating CMBN and CMRT. The key I received in my download key wouldn't activate them. I fired off a ticket to Support, and we worked through the issue. Steve stuck with me even though it was Christmas Eve and got CMRT to activate. I used my original key from CMBN upgrade 3 to activate CMBN. CMBS and CMFB activated the first time with the provided key. I have to give a shout-out to Steve for his dedication on Christmas Eve/first night of Chunakah. He could have put the question on the back burner, but didn't. What dedication! He even went so far as to thank me for supporting Battlefront! Thank you Steve. This is an example of how Battlefront has become a and remains such a great company.. BTW this was on my Mac.
  17. I downloaded the patch on 10/26 or 10/27 on my Mac. I still had to go on my account, copy my CMBS S/N, and paste it into my authorization window to play my game. Is that common?
  18. Are the rotten optics in the MTLBs due to the system or general lack of knowledge of splitting the squad so you leave a scout team in the vehicle to aid in spotting? Similar to a BMP having bad spotting and reaction time if you don't unload the squad, split off a scout team, and reload the scout team into the BMP.
  19. Ah, I see. These old eyes missed the setup zones. They faded into the map work.
  20. Thank you very much for during this DAR. I'm sure it will be very informative. I'm surprised by your selection the AV mines and foxholes. For some reason, I was under the impression that those had to be placed during the initial setup since they're primarily defensive. Also, I can't remember my two or three-man team ever being able to dig even a very basic, relatively effective, hole in loose or sandy soil in less than 30 minutes. A one-man scrape hole yes, but certainly not a sandbagged one. Are we able to place fortifications during actual play? How long does it take to place a mine or dig a foxhole?
  21. They don't have to surprise us. They just have to wait until Inauguration Day next January. The circus clown Trump has already praised Putin as a strong leader and hired (then fired after media discovery) a campaign manager who contributed to a pro-Russian Ukraine party. And the snake Billery has a track record of appeasement and lack of action. When do you think Putin will assault East Ukraine with all the forces he's positioned around the borders with Ukraine since last May to secure land access to the Crimea? See http://www.rferl.org/contentinfographics/ukraine-besieged/27934213.html
  22. Read The "Art of War" by Sun Szu. Then read it again, and FOLLOW the principles. Failure to follow the principles was one of the main reasons why the U.S. Lost in Vietnam Nam, and Lee lost at Gettysburg.
  23. Yup, you're right. However, we still can't get as many Marines on the beach by vert envelopment as by sea landing. We used it to postition units such as a 105-battery with an infantry platoon as a guard.
  24. I was also surprised by the "11 Marines" comment. Also, at risk of being "PC," since the Secretary of the Department of Defense has opened all billets to all genders, we should use the correct term of "one officer and 42 enlisted." Officers were never considered "men" in the first place.
  25. "Ayup, shot ma dog yesterday." "Was he mad?" "Wasn't too damn pleased, Ayup."
