Yes, the +1, as I understand it, indicates a higher level of motivation. Eg. if you select Fanatic for your troops, they will have a +2 in that field.
The modifier never changes ( without someone dying ), even as their state changes to Rattled etc.

Clearly they loved their Commander and killing him made them angry. You shouldn't have made them angry !

I'm just curious as to the problem with limiting framerates to 30 - can your eyes tell ?
I've seen the Fraps counter on my system drop to 20 and I wouldn't have known, it was still smooth.

Anyway, it's not like a flight sim where a low framerate might trick your perception of an enemy's flightpath - in CM, the bullet still goes where it would have gone
I'd rather run my graphics on Best and have framerate 20-30 than turn it down to get a ( imperceptible ) higher framerate. Just my opinion, of course.

I do strenuously disagree with your characterisation of CM as a " decade-old looking game". I think ( esp. with Aris and other mods ) it looks pretty damn fantastic, especially with what's going on "under the hood".

Oh god, I'm in the middle of that one and it's like Verdun.

There's men all over the map, cradling their buddies' bodies and sobbing. Some are running in little circles. We've broken in to an enemy position and ... there's more of them
My men also appear to have mastered the art of shooting over the enemy's heads ( one guy fired a full Tommygun clip at 2 fleeing Germans at 30-40m and missed ) whereas all the Germans have Richthofen-like accuracy

I started with quite a lot of men. It aint gonna end like that.  I'm going to need every strategy in this thread even if I win ( seems unlikely )

Baneman got a reaction from nik mond in So I can only dismount at end of vehicle moves?
Also remember that although you cannot split a squad while it's in a vehicle, if you split them at setup and mount them one at a time - and then give each one its movement command for when the vehicle reaches its destination -  then they wont recombine and will go their separate ways when they dismount.

This only works during setup though ( during game, you'd have to have the separate elements mount in different turns so that you could give one element a dismount movement command before the other boards.

    Can still be handy though.

If a unit is out of command and a Company HQ is nearby, you wont see the command line - But, you WILL see the eye or voice effect in the unit's UI - that's how you know they're getting some HQ benefit from him being nearby.

Baneman got a reaction from Bud Backer in Just when you thought it was safe to come to the forum....or, Mines!
The little flag is to remind YOU where they are - mines take no sides. If you run your guys through, expect bangs.
The enemy will see it after they've set one off - or if their engineers have sat in the AS or an adjacent AS for a few turns.

A single "mine" is as many as fit into an 8m by 8m Action Spot. How many that is actually (roughly), is not known by me.
So you are restricted to the "basic" coverage per Action Spot. It's sort of luck of the draw whether enemy set them off - note that Mixed mines are ( in my experience ) not worth much, I've seen LOTS of infantry run through them with impunity... and then after 9 squads have run through. the last squad sets off 3.

So if you're going to use them, AP or AT specific rather than Mixed is (usually) more effective.

Baneman got a reaction from Bulletpoint in How would you describe each Combat Mission in few words?
Tough question - Kohlenkau's description of CMRT is accurate ... unless you end up in forests/woods when major SMG armed Russians make things ...interesting.

I haven't had CMFI+GL myself long enough to judge properly, but it gives a taste of non-uber equipment ( funny Italian stuff, PzIII's etc. + learn to cope without Pzschrecks and/or fight Tigers ) and the joy (?) of fighting with a less than stellar TO&E of the Italians ( who can pull out some decent resistance nevertheless if you treat them more carefully ).

IMO, Market Garden adds more firepower to the Allied formations otherwise not very different, but it's hard to tell since CMBN is the one product I've kept up to date the longest.

CMFI can be more puzzlelike ( esp. if you're playing the Italians or have an Italian component ), but feels very different. More care needed perhaps.
CMRT is all about shock and awe ( to borrow the modern term ) - the Russians want to move in fast and blazing to keep the opposition off balance. If the German player can slow them down, it can go very very badly for them.

Well, believe it or not, here in the "West" newspapers ( news media in general ) have to have verifiable facts to back up their stories. If they get caught making stuff up, they would lose all credibility and shortly thereafter go out of business. This sort of thing is taken very seriously.

So, yes, a US newspaper - but a highly respected one, not just some random blogger making up whatever he likes.

Baneman got a reaction from gunnersman in What does "set piece battle" mean?!?!?!
Yes, I'm used to the term in context of Napoleonic battles - both sides needed to find each other, there were numerous skirmishes between garrison forces, scouting cavalry and detachments up to even battalion size, but eventually the bulk of 2 entire armies would be near each other, each side would take the decision that "we can win this" and usually the following day, almost the entire (field) army on each side would deploy and fight - and that would be the "set piece battle".

Going to have to disagree - there are a multitude of games which make us use the skills inside us, but which are not realistic. That's fine, but this one strives for realistic. And that's good.  It's why we're here and not on those other games' forums.

PS: Also see the latest UKR/US report in the AAR for alleviation of your spotting concerns - seems even the much vaunted US can run into ambush despite their modern gear. It's all good  ( and realistic )

And now, lest you start fingering your knife, I'm outta here. I'm not much over long-distances, but I can really shift for the first 50m, so you can work on sburke, he's backing away slowly.

Baneman reacted to nuzrak in How about some basic advice for those of us new to modern?
On the plus side, I'm certain that learning how to use the Russian / Ukrainian forces effectively against the technologically superior US troops will almost assuredly make you a better CM player in both Modern and WW2 titles.

Well, that was at least true for me with CMSF, where the learning curve for playing the Syrian forces, especially against human opponents, was absolutely harrowing but well worth it in the end.

My two-cents on the key elements for fighting on the modern battlefield 'with inferior forces especially' are (as mostly already stated),

Use all possible cover all the time for everything you have. But note also that buildings won't protect your troops very much when they are spotted! Helicopters love troops on rooftops!!!
Don't move your troops until you have to and always do it with overwatch.
As the US forces, engage the enemy at range with fire superiority whenever possible.
Fighting against US forces, try to remain hidden and lure them into keyhole crossfire corridors then retreat quickly and do it again!
Use scouts. It's better to lose a couple of guys or a Humvee etc, than a whole platoon, APC or MBT.
Use your artillery and CAS assets wisely.
Examine your troops thoroughly at setup and try to assign them tasks they are best suited to.
Learn how the C3 comms networks in CM functions, including its delays up and down the chain of command. I can't stress enough how important and how often overlooked this element of the game seems to be. Even having a partial contact because of good C3 links seems to make a huge difference in spotting times.
And lastly, be patient! The modern battlefield is very unforgiving, don't run to meet death!

One thing that will be interesting to see is how ECM affects the US forces and if it is enough to level the field?

Baneman got a reaction from Doug Williams in sell on Steam?
Thought experiment  : The trouble is not the $100 or whatever, it's the work that would need to be done to get CM in synch with Steam's method.
Say it took 3 months ( made-up figure of course, but unlikely to be a trivial amount of time ). That's 3 months of work for HALF of BFC's programming staff ( assuming 1 person could do it ). That's time they're not spending releasing new game, be it Black Sea or Bulge or whatever's next or patching bugs or adding new features. Maybe they can't financially factor in that kind of extra non-productive time - in that scenario, already the Steam experiment HAS to work or they're in deep do-do.

It's just not as simple as "just sell something on Steam".

Existing CM players probably wouldn't pirate a CM ( or any ) game. But what about new potential customers ? They might. They're not loyal fans yet.

I respectfully disagree with this point - a lot of us who have played most of BFC's games feel we get a lot more for our cash due to the replayability of the game - one of the commenters on the article said he had 750 games on Steam.
I already struggle to find enough hours simply to play BFC's 3 CMx2 offerings + the 2 CMx1. That guy clearly isn't looking for replayability. I can't see him investing 10-20 man-hours in any of BFC's games' learning curves. We inhabit different worlds.

Again, I fail to see the difference to Steam. On Steam, many patches are free and Modules aka DLC is not.
The time to install modules, patches and activation problems is a once-off issue unless you move your stuff from hard drive to hard drive regularly. Bad content ? I don't quite know what that is. Is that scenarios you don't like or what ?

It has been said many times in this thread, but exposure is not the same as sales. Especially if many people who didn't like the game ( cf. learning curve ) give it bad reviews.

This one has been mentioned before, but I just don't see the relevance - What if Steam went out of business ? Exactly the same applies.

I would say, probably just expect to have your troops die a lot more, faster while you learn.

So, similar to how you got used to CM2 WWII, just speeded up.

As more and more people learn via the above method, more and more Tips and Tricks will be posted.

Baneman got a reaction from A Canadian Cat in Slow command, spotting, and fatigue
I think there's a small morale penalty when Tired - I can't be sure because when my guys are Tired they're either not fighting, or in so deep that "subtle" penalties are out the window

Slow is pretty good for concealment - especially if the enemy haven't already seen you eg. crawling the last AS into some cover gaining LoS on enemy positions. I've also used it successfully to get guys into a top story, but once there they may be more visible ( peering out of windows )  than a guy at the edge of a forest, say.

I kinda disagree ( wait, does that make your post a self-fulfilling prophecy ?     ). I'd say the community as whole tends not to suffer fools easily, but there are plenty of posters in your category who make either well-informed posts or posts which lead to all of us becoming better-informed ( ie. good questions ).

Tired ( ie. fatigue state ) can always recover.

Morale states can end up more or less fixed ( eg. may recover, but over timescales not available in your scenario ).

I think the yellow is just for emphasis ( but that's a best guess, never really paid much attention to it if it's not red )
    - thinking about it more - it could well indicate that it is now fixed - I've had low motivation units go from OK to Panic in one turn just from suppressive fire, then recover all the way back to OK in the next turn when no fire was coming in. But Rattled guys with a yellow border stay Rattled.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.
