  1. Nice ideas, but wouldn't it be equally as valid to just have independant FOW setting for the player and the AI. For a real challenge you could give yourself IMFOW and the AI God mode Mind you some of my results suggest that is the case anyway
  2. Silly question probably but you do have the CDV version don't you? Those install instructions are for the CDV version only and the pathway should read something like. C:\program files\combat mission 3 afrika korps\run not C:\program files\cmak\run unless you manually created that directory when installing the game? For the BFC version you just run the patch in the game directory [ February 23, 2005, 04:13 AM: Message edited by: Captain Pies ]
  3. LOL takes me back to my days of reading those "Commando" type comics. The Germans always shouted "Achtung Tommy!" and the Japs always died shouting "Aiiiiiiieeeeee".
  4. I'm all for having assets re-tasked mid scenario but what worries me is the loss of control aspect of it. The AI sometimes does dumb things and I can see no exception to this rule if it is given control of re-tasked units, eg reversing a bunch of tanks into LOS of an 88. How about a compromise where the player retains control but re-tasked units can only move towards the friendly or neutral edges of the map? There would be nothing to stop the player from leaving the units where they are if they want to defy orders but this could be mitigated as suggested with a points reduction if they are not exited from the map by a certain turn.
  5. At last someone has mentioned the F word. FAITH (in BFC) There are a whole lot of people in this thread that need to get some. I have it, and I'd warrant that the 10,000 others that aren't posting on this forum have it too. Could we please get back to the bones now?
  6. Didn't we go to war with Greenland (or was it Iceland?) in the 70's over the last remaining Cod in the Atlantic? lasted 45 minutes or something stupid like that. It ended when the cod got bored and buggered off. Edit: It was Iceland: Cod Wars [ February 10, 2005, 05:59 AM: Message edited by: Captain Pies ]
  7. I would imagine that a 64 bit machine with PCI-Express graphics will be the mid range box by the time CMX2 comes out. I'm holding out 'til then before I upgrade. Might as well get the best I can then, rather than upgrade now and find its just fair to middling in a year.
  8. Actually it would be possible for BFC to do cut scenes if they implement the whole battle movie playback that many people have requested. It could be done with a slightly modified version of that functionality.
  9. Nope, we never got "Combat" on this side of the pond, there is a nice little scenario for CMBO based on one of the episodes though. I think it's just called Combat
  10. These would be perfect for the "Panzers gone Weald" mod that Andreas has in the works. I'm pretty certain that they are all UK scenery.
  11. Ambrose mentions the "Salad Fork" in D-Day and the same excerpt appears in The Victors. He doesn't name it as such though.
  12. Variable Timing The shells have a radio transmiter which can be set for a certain burst height above the ground. Very effective against entrenchments without overhead cover and gives a better spread of shrapnel against exposed targets. Only available in the late war years. A grog will be along shortly to tell you when probably
  13. Aside from my hatred of waypoint plotting the ideas above seem to be coming from players who prefer the "Gods Eye" view of the battlefield. Playing at the battalion command level is not what I play CM for. I think of myself of the Platoon or Squad commander for the unit I happen to be plotting. Imposing limits on the flexibility of those units would seriously hamper my enjoyment of the game. Although these ideas would provide an enhanced C&C model over what we have now I'm just not sure they would be valid in the WWII environment. I'm not widely read but what I have read leads me to believe platoon comanders were literally told "capture that hill or town" by the company commanders and came up with the details themselves. They wouldn't have really been restricted to executing a plan the company CO came up with other than coordinating with neighbouring platoons and the support weapons. I just feel the ideas above would apply a level of C&C that didn't really exist at that time.
  14. I think this would be way too much waypoint plotting to do. Its the one bit of CM I find tedious and although its a necessity I would prefer to keep it to a minimum.
  15. I bought my Nvidia card just to get the fog! I'm steering clear of buying a new PC until it's released and I know what's gonna work. Probably will be a PCI Express card by the time its released.
  16. It's been suggested by myself and others before but here it is again 1. Contour overlay for maps or even better the ability to overlay a scan of a contempory map or a fake map auto generated from the terrain. 2. Only things that would appear on an officers map should appear on the game map as generic icons, eg large groups of houses, rivers and known defenses. The game map could then be filled in with the detailed objects as LOS is achieved to various parts it. Should make for some interesting changes of plan as unseen houses, small woods or streams appear.
  17. Welcome to CM and the forum KG. I hope you don't have a wife. If you do, please let her know she won't be getting much sense out of you for the forseeable future. In answer to your question the Waffle thread is a form of opponent finder for a small group of members with an affinity for Molten TNT. You may also have noticed the Peng thread. Feel free to go in there and introduce yourself as a new member
  18. IIRC there is a minimum distance for canister too to allow a good spread of the shot or am I mistaken?
  19. I currently have two Padawans. One is cutting his teeth on CM:BO and is a work colleague so there is scope for lunchtime tcp/ip The other is a friend who is into military history but doesn't play any games on his PC. It's a delicate operation coaxing him to try it out whilst assuring his wife that "It's not time consuming at all"
  20. Whenever I go to sites online that sell software like Amazon. I make a point of checking out the CM reviews. There are always a few but I like to add my tuppence too. Every little bit helps the cause for world domination.
  21. Andreas " Regiments were known by colonels' names before 1751, and there was another Howard regiment, so they became known by the colour of their facings: "The Buff Howards" and "The Green Howards". That's how "The Buffs" and "The Green Howards" eventually became the official names of the regiments much later." from This Site Hope you've got a brew on
  22. Can a Marm Herr carry a 2" mortar team? you could get rid of both nuisances with a single enemy shot, that way it might make the turn process a microsecond faster. SPOILER > > > > > Actually my MH's in Sidi Rezegh did kill a couple of PSW's but the kill ratio was 7 - 1. I don't think I need to say in whose favour
