CMBB on a 42" Plasma Screen
Captain Pies replied to von Nev's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
At the risk of inviting numerous jokes relating to size of screen and lack of manhood, I'll tell you that at work I run a Theatre system that has an 18ft x 7ft screen back projected with twin Cinema DLP projectors at 15,000 ANSI Lumens. Alas since CMBB only runs on a single screen I can only use one projector and half the screen. Still 7ft x 9ft is more than enough for anyone I think and CMBB looks really sweet. -
Maps of North Africa
Captain Pies replied to SgtMuhammed's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Try COPAC Its the online catalogue of the British Library and 22 Universities. Use the experimental v3 interface and put War Office in the anything box. Comes up with quite a few, Tunisia 1941 1:100,000 for a start and plenty more. You can make an inter Library loan to get hold of some of them. Shell position on impact - is it modelled?
Captain Pies replied to moneymaxx's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
I'm no expert but logic tells me that air resistance will always ensure that a pointed shell will have it's nose oriented along the ballistic flight path. If it didn't, things like VT fused shells wouldn't work as the fuse would be pointing upwards as it approached the ground. Thus ballistic impact angles for HC would favour penetration on highly sloped plates because that angle ought to be closer to the normal than not. If this is modeled or not I don't know. -
Gun damage on tanks? You Crazy?
Captain Pies replied to Patton21's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Take a look at This Page Shows how a ricochet can disable the gun mechanism and cause the crew to bail. -
CDV, the installation wizard
Captain Pies replied to British Tommy's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
I believe we all suffer from this affliction. I find a Mantra helps when putting the CD in. CDV are ****e, CDV are ****e, CDV are ****e... repeat until you are able to cancel the autorun. -
mechanics of CMBB ??
Captain Pies replied to Charlie Co 2nd /8th's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
No is the short and polite answer to your question I personally find all the controls intuitive and don't see the need to change them. Have you tried the demos out? -
Wittmann Hill 65.5 Battle
Captain Pies replied to RockinHarry's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Yup, CSDT - Bussard is the one, I just played it and it's fun ********************SPOILER************************* > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > In the scenario the Russian have BT5's not T-34's so it's probably a little less amazing than the real life accomplishment. -
A poll of sorts....
Captain Pies replied to nevermind's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
I mentioned the term. A reverse slope defense doesn't physically have to be on the reverse slope of a hill. It just describes a situation where the defender can bring all his support weapons (including arty) to bear on the attackers infantry whilst the attackers support weapons cannot fire on the defenders. which is pretty much what you describe. The extra details you give help a little in visualizing the situation but without looking at the map in question it's hard to say if this was a gamey tactic or not. -

I'd second CrankyKris on this. If the VL's are in indefensible terrain your opponent is not going to sit all his forces on them. The game then becomes more about finding and killing your opponent than grabbing the VL's (he hasn't got them so why should you bother with them). If they are on the valueable /defensible ground which would generally be hills, then what you just described would be a classic reverse slope defense. -
When to use "Withdraw" Command
Captain Pies replied to Snowbart's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Don't bother. Just "Advance" to the rear. You don't take the morale hit and your troops use available cover. There will be a command delay this way, but if your troops are dead by the end of that they would have been dead anyway IMHO whatever command you used. Its been mentioned in passing by a couple of posters in relation to dynamic lighting, but needs to be specifically stated. FO's and Mortars should have a new ammo type for night battles: Parachute Flares. I don't really care how it's modelled, just turn night into day for a minute or so

Hey newbies,beware the spoilsports!
Captain Pies replied to Poor Old Spike's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Hmmm... Checked out that picture and all is explained. If it really is POS it was taken in Plymouth which is one of the UK's largest naval bases with a correspondingly large population of AHEM "Ladies of Negotiable Affection" Need I say more? -
Do you mean in round 2 or as a bit on the side (oooer)? I'm always up for a bit on the side so mail me at the address in my profile if you are. I don't really have a problem with random troop quality as you get more grunts to make up for low quality. The problem is when half of them shoot themselves in the foot or go down with Dysentery, and that King Tiger you bought develops engine trouble on the way to the front. Should we put this to the vote?

I'll go with the flow on this but the situation that Iain and I experienced was a major armour imbalance. I had 3 T34's and 2 KV's he had a Marder and possibly one tank. I haven't received his surrender file yet so cannot confirm exactly what he was left with after casualties were applied. Iain can you let us know? A situation like this is probably a one off but wouldn't occur if Casualties were not set as random. Besides, my unfair advantage has given me an over-inflated sense of my own tactical skills and I'll need taking down a peg or two in the next round.

Re: Iain Fuller Vs Captain Pies Our game has stalled a little over the last week as Iain has been busy with college course work and I have had machine problems. SP at the moment is I hold both flags on the map and my T34s have fought off a small infantry assault on the main village. All Iains SPW's are dead and my KV gunners are sitting around drinking tea and talking about the medals they are going to get. A Marder Iain was fielding has dissappeared into the weeds somewhere but he is now pummeling my main position in the village with heavy caliber Arty to devastating effect. A suspected Tank has also just popped up on my exposed left flank, which worries me since I haven't seen any German tanks so far and was wondering where they all were So far I think I'm on top

Bloody Hell old chap, its not cricket to stereotype us Brits in such fashion.

Hey Mikey You aren't doing a very good sales job on behalf of BFC, You may have just deprived them of the $15 that shaves 10 minutes off the release of CMIII.

Redimpz The extras CD that comes with CMBO doesn't contain anything that you can't already download off the various fansites so don't go buying CMBO for that reason alone. That said I'd still advise that you kick off with that game because its so cheap and will teach you the principles of the game engine and tactics. You can then buy CMBB and get your arse handed to you by the AI until you figure out how much closer to reality it is than CMBO.
