Erwin reacted to kevinkin in THE PANDEMIC CHAT ROOM
Don't have time to see if this was posted already:

Erwin got a reaction from George MC in New Scenario - Der Ring der 5. Panzer-Division
I swear I already had a CMRT Der Ring Der 5 Panzer Division_v2 BETA' dated 11/16/2016. I renamed it adding the suffix "old" so that I could put your new v2 BETA in the same scenario folder. But, according to my system this new v2 BETA is dated 7/19/2015.
I may have discovered time travel.
Send money for the secret...

Erwin got a reaction from George MC in New Scenario - Der Ring der 5. Panzer-Division
Hi George... One of the reasons I just bought a super computer was to play your huge scenario. However, when I used the above link to d/l I got a BETA version 2 dated 7/19/2015, and I already have a version dated 2016(!).
Do you need to update the date?

Regardless of smoke, unit should still be able to hear the tank (and therefore know that it's there)..

Erwin got a reaction from Sven in Something Very Wrong with LOS Through Trees
Many of us play mostly at ground level 1 and try our best to eyeball LOS and play as "realistically" as we can. There is a a real issue with the "one pixel" gap phenomenon that only the AI can see but which allows a unit to fire and kill through what to Mk 1 human eyeballs at level 1 looks like impenetrable forest.
The other example is the clear LOS that one sees when at level 1 eyeballing the LOS but the unit itself cannot see or fire at what seems to be an easily visible target to the human eye. One experiences that situation very frequently in urban scenarios and also along straight roads that do not appear to the human eye to have any obstructions.
Maybe not a game-breaker, but it happens frequently enuff to be irritating.

Wasn't sure what you meant... Most crews won't have rifle or MG ammo, but they still will pick up rifles and MG's in the same way they PU SMG's. The ammo will come from the unit they are giving medical aid to. (I cannot recall if I ever saw a crew PU a weapon and still have no ammo for that weapon.)

When you say "the rest" I presume you are talking about the systematic massacres of entire villages in Poland and all points East (not forgetting Oradour-sur-Glane in France of course) that the Germans came across? Or was it the rape of women before they were gassed? For the folks who lost their entire families in WW2 thanks to the civilizing effects of the German Army & SS, there may not be quite the same sense of indignation.

Erwin got a reaction from SlowMotion in best scenarios for CMBS noob
Unless someone else has a specific suggestion, I would start with trying the smallest scenarios. I was a veteran of CM1 and then CMSF1, but when I started CMBS it was shocking how much more deadlier it was.

Yes. I regularly use crews with pistols as medics as then they will PU SMG's as well as other weapons.

Erwin got a reaction from General Jack Ripper in THE PANDEMIC CHAT ROOM
Talking about "smoke and mirrors", China is an abominable authoritarian dictatorship which seems hell-bent on military expansion (eg: South China Sea and also the very little reported conflict with India in "3 Corners" area of Bhutan) and has put over a million people in forced labor camps: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/16/world/asia/xinjiang-china-forced-labor-camps-uighurs.html while designing a ghastly police state where one's every movement, even facial expressions, are monitored by AI to detect possible dissent.
One has to remember that the "modern face of China" is only represented by a thin strip of Economic Enterprise Zones that run along its coast. If you travel a few hundred miles inland you step back a thousand years into a 3rd world country - the standard of living of the vast majority of its population.
The point is that China is well known for consistent lying (remember how the artificial islands built in the S. China Seas were "only for research purposes and would never be militarized"? We really do not know the truth about the pandemic in China. Time will eventually tell as it's harder to lie for a long period of time about economic impacts.
"Our failures" fade into insignificance compared to China's.

Yes, it's great that the way you tell the story one really starts to feel for the individual men - it's not just the pics, you are a good storyteller

Actually I quite like Marmite and cucumber sandwiches using rich creamy butter and that lovely soft white sliced bread (Warburtons?) that we can't eat any more as we have been told that it is killing us.

At this point I think we can all agree that LOS in CM2 just doesn't work the way it should simulate RL in certain/many circumstances. ...Not only in this example but also looking down a street with no obstructions and being unable to see a building that should be clear as day at the end of the street. But, it's just a game folks, not an accurate depiction of RL

Erwin got a reaction from JulianJ in MOUT and urban counterinsurgency (and CM)
What I noticed in TOC is that one didn't see the roadblocks until on had eyes on the location. So, one could simulate a Mogadishu situation since... until one arrived at a particular road one would not see it was impassable. Then one would have to backtrack and seek a new route - similar to what happened in RL.
Also, there is much fun in playing a scenario that is based on a RL event, but doesn't have to slavishly try to recreate it. I see Op Anaconda and Black Hawk Down more as inspirations for "stories" that could be better than the RL events. Rather like how some books are completely changed when turned into a movie and thus improved.
