And another timely one on Ukraine graft:
    https://www.wsj.com/world/eggs-ammo-and-underwear-inside-ukraines-new-push-against-military-graft-8b47b6d9?mod=world_lead_pos2
KYIV, Ukraine—Masked Ukrainian security officers have raided properties, seized wads of cash and detained suspects in a recent crackdown on graft in the purchase of goods for the military ranging from eggs to artillery shells.
As Ukraine faces setbacks on the battlefield in the third year of Russia’s invasion, attention has turned to corruption that is corroding support for the war effort at home and abroad.
The appointment of Bezrukova follows a series of procurement scandals that erupted after Ukrainian investigative journalists revealed the Defense Ministry had purchased eggs at more than twice their market price. President Volodymyr Zelensky fired the country’s defense minister in an effort to quell a furor in Ukraine and disquiet among Western allies.
Since then, law enforcement has carried out a number of corruption-related arrests. Among the most high-profile cases is that of businessman Ihor Hrynkevych, whose companies won contracts to supply clothing and underwear to the armed forces despite previously being involved in construction.
The companies weren’t able to meet the standards outlined in the contracts, resulting in losses of more than $30 million, according to Ukrainian law enforcement. Hrynkevych was detained in December while trying to pay a $500,000 bribe to a security official. His lawyer didn’t respond to a request for comment.
A separate investigation by Ukrainian law enforcement implicated senior defense ministry officials in embezzling $40 million meant to purchase artillery shells for the army.

FWIW: The primary tactic that works for all CM games (unless your units are all armor) is to send several 2-man scouts ahead to spot enemy positions - especially the most dangerous: ATGM's and ATG's (and tanks of course).  The best approach is to kill those asap with arty or mass fire from tanks etc.  Once the ATGM's and/or ATG's are dead, then one can maneuver with more "safety" vs enemy units.

Adam, your questions are confusing.  it occurs to me maybe you don't have English as your first language.  Maybe post in your language and we'll try and translate.

??  One has to assign all "prep fire" in the setup turn.  The only choice (for offmap arty) is whether it is "immediate" or starts 5, 10 or 15 minutes later.  Prep fire from an onmap gun is always "immediate" (onmap arty fire cannot be delayed).
I cannot see how firing on possible approaches is gamey.  The only house rule that makes sense is "No firing on known enemy set-up locations on turn 1."  (How would one know where the enemy set-up locations are without first loading the game as the enemy player?)

My plan is to have this be my only post in this thread... I've known about the thread from day one. I really only have one question about the whole thing.
How can anyone know the truth of the matter?
Yeah, when we invaded Iraq because of WMD's I was one of the ones questioning the decision. I watched in disbelief Colin Powell's address to the UN, the one with the crudely made computer generations of Iraq's supposed mobile WMD labs. Not satellite photos... crudely made computer representations - the lack of no photos was a big tell. I also read all of Hans Blix's report about there being no proof of WMD's and his willingness to keep investigating.
Why was I so skeptical of the US government? I missed the Vietnam draft by 2 years. The Pentagon papers clearly showed those "in command" were lying through their teeth about the state of things. For me, this type of government mendacity erodes trust. Fast forward to Iraq and my saying to a friend during a work break meal as we watched the opening salvo Shock and Awe bombing on TV "I can't believe anyone believes the reasons for this after having gone through Vietnam". My friend's response "Obviously you don't know anyone who lives in New York" (guess where he was from). It was a very enlightening moment about the human condition and yet not enlightening at all about the justifications for the war.
Then there's Russia-gate. You all know it has been thoroughly debunked right? In a court of law no less. See the Durham report. The whole "thing" was plotted by the Clinton campaign. There is also the Inspector General's report (Horowitz) about the FBI, and its head honchos, losing its/their way. When these truths were exposed one NYT reporter commented about the Clinton campaign liars thusly "...they lied and with sanctimony...".
We were told the Hunter Biden laptop was Russian disinformation... Trump (who I will never vote for) was called out in a debate with Biden for promoting Russian disinformation by the mainstream media moderator because he mentioned the laptop. The moderator's reasoning: 50 former high ranking intelligence operatives said the laptop bore all the classic hallmarks of a Russian disinformation campaign.
Have you ever wondered why Paul Manafort was tried and convicted for FARA violations while Hunter Biden is given a free pass? Or the fact that Peter Navarro was sentenced to prison for ignoring a congressional subpoena (yanked off an airplane and handcuffed) but Hunter faces no repercussions?
So, we've got the CIA and the FBI running covert ops against the American public in order for form public opinion in their favor. Apparently there is a healthy appetite for wolf attacks these days because no one ever seems to ignore or tire of the boy calling wolf in real life. At this point Regan definitely got it backwards: verify before trusting.
The essence of a good con is telling the mark what they want to hear. No con can succeed without it.
With this, I am out. I don't expect anyone in this thread to agree with anything I've added to this conversation and I am very much okay with it. I did want to voice my thoughts on the fundamental nature of matter. I hope you all are having a great day/night and enjoying life one day at a time.

Totally agree with Centurian.  (One cannot see a dam thing especially WW2 night actions.)  It is a very normal RL tactic to hose down suspected enemy positions to allow friendlies to advance.
Am also unsure about the "no preplnned fire in Meeting Engagements".  If you know what your enemy is heading for why not bombard?  Also if you know what you are heading for, why not bombard?
As mentioned earlier, most designers now solve much of this preplanned issue by having arty arrive as a reinforcement

It's safe to remove all the content folders (mods, scenarios, campaigns and quick battle maps) and put them someplace safe.  When you have your desired game version installed you can add them back in making sure there are no duplications.

Am surprised that this first turn "gamey" arty fire is still an issue. Most designers have arty arrive as a reinforcement to avoid this.

Erwin got a reaction from AdamPraha in CM Vietnam war MOD ?
There is a CMSF mod called "Heaven & Earth" that mods the terrain to that of an "unspecific" SE Asia that could be Vietnam.  From the manual:
Heaven & Earth is a supermod centring on the fictional country of Bong-Hai, the Bong-
Hai civil war & its messy aftermath.
The Bong-Hai Civil War is suspiciously similar to the real life Vietnam War but, for
technical reasons (architectural, floral, TOE, linguistic, vehicular & weaponry), because
the team could not truly represent that conflict we decided to go the fictional "Vietnamesque"
    route.
    The two sides are...
    • The People's Army of The Free Democratic Republic of Bong-Hai & its People's
Militia insurgents (aka "The Roundheads")... they are the Earth component of this
narrative & are as similar to the NVA & VC as we can get them.
    • The Imperial Army of the Divine Kingdom of Bong-Hai including its iconic, M16
wielding Imperial Cavalry (aka "The Cavaliers") .. they are the Heaven
component of this narrative & represent both the poorer & better performing
    elements of the ARVN.
The Heaven & Earth modpack is designed for CMSF2 version 2.03 or 2.04, it is advised that
you use no other mods alongside Heaven & Earth as it is a complete package with a unique
UI, sounds, scripts, special effects, vehicle's & weapons... many of which are swapped
internally by the use of tags.

It is not uncommon for a map maker to accidentally place terrain that bogs vehicles accidentally.  In CM1 it was much easier to tell terrain types apart.  In CM2 it can all look very similar.  Had a similar situation in one of Paper Tiger's maps  (very dry desert) and he was able to replace the boggy terrain that had been accidentally placed.

Traffic management for speed on a large map becomes important when playing H2H - esp MEETING ENGAGEMENTS when you want to get to a location as fast as possible - and therefore you don't want vehicles to slow down at bends in the road.  In those situations am often traveling FAST and using 2 waypoints at every bend that is 60 degrees or more.  (Yes, it is a PITA and a clickfest - as is trying to give new covered arcs to tanks at every waypoint.  It was easier in CM1 cos CM1 had a "one-click 180 degree arc" feature.)
