MikeyD got a reaction from Blueonblack83 in CMSF upgrade/remake?
The old v1.00-based CMSF game engine is probably past salvaging. So returning to CMSF would most probably mean a ground-up redo with precious little that's recoverable. Not a mere engine upgrade. And they'd hardly be expected to return to fighting in 2007 again. So the notion of 'returning to CMSF' would probably mean returning to similar modern desert war. CMSF but not CMSF. Maybe the next CM desert war would be against Egypt, or Lybia, or some god-forsaken spot out around Turkmenistan.

MikeyD got a reaction from gunnersman in Ukraine Combat Footage
I recall when John Huston was filming combat footage in Italy in WWII he found actual combat to be dreadfully 'uncinematic'. So after the action he'd often call the same units back to recreate their deeds more 'Hollywood' with cameras optimally placed for most dramatic effect.

MikeyD got a reaction from Capt. Toleran in M25 CDTE - salvage priority?
If your troops are already maxed out on carrying weight the won't pick up the valuable weapons off bodies. That's one of the downsides to acquiring a couple extra Javelin missiles and a thousand more rounds before you exit your vehicle.

I'm reminded of M60A2 'Starship' with the Shillelagh missile system. Minimum range was a staggering 730m and max range was only 2000m. imagine trying to use that vehicle on a CM map!

MikeyD got a reaction from DMS in Suggestion: Give us 'ironman' mode
I recall awhile ago (a LONG time ago) I was playing battles where I did not ascend to 'eye of God' observation height and I never moved the camera beyond my own troops front line. I kept the camera a ground level as much as I humanly could. And of course no tree toggle. The game turned exponentially more challenging. Being in a copse of trees where you can't see three feet in front of you, hearing unseen rifle fire and suddenly an artillery barrage shakes the ground beneath you is pretty terrifying, especially when there's no fleeing skyward with the tap of a key.

I've already expressed my fondness for the Ukrainian T-64. Here it is, the least-capable of the tanks in the game. The true underdog. T-64BV.

MikeyD got a reaction from A Canadian Cat in Any guidance for newbies? Have no idea how to play :(
A handy rule of thumb is don't do anything in the game that you wouldn't do in real life. Would you charge across an open field into the teeth of a machine gun? I think not. So don't do it in the game either.  This rule applies to pretty much everything.

You don't clear woods using an equal number to the troops you're facing. You need overwhelming superiority. If the enemy opens fire he gets return fire from four times his number.

MikeyD got a reaction from slysniper in How to overcome Tunguskas?
Curiosity got the better of me. I picked a M107 .50 cal sniper rifle team (first time I've touched them in the game, I think) and went hunting for Tunguska. Sniper rifle will easily hole Tunguska and the vehicle seems to freak out, getting penetrations without knowing where they're coming from. I even got one crew to bail out in panic. M107 is supposed to be an anti-material rife. Holing Tunguska and Strella while remaining unseen is it bread-and-butter.

Here's something to give you a chuckle.
In the editor in Flavor Objects is a listing for 'posters'. In the WWII titles they're mostly filled with propaganda posters. Not exactly appropriate for modern times. So a selection of fake Ukrainian billboards were made. Everything from UN observer force notices to government emergency decrees to Chinese and Italian food, karaoke and rock concert advertisements! The smattering of roman text among the Cyrillic means these are most suitable for the environs around Kiev. You can't say we didn't try to being you modern Ukraine!

If they had released the game during the World Cup - THEN there'd be a problem!  American football you can play an entire scenario during the commercial breaks.

For those who haven't noticed, the CMBS QB map folder is full to overflowing. 330 maps, and some pretty spectacular looking maps too. Complete with multiple AI orders, triggers, the whole nine yards. All hail MarkEzra for his work assembling those. I just got done playing a QB on a huge map involving a dam on a river, an overpass highway, a huge railroad bridge and a rock quarry. Great fun to play.

Actually, even the Beta team is playing the game with add-on beta test functions removed for the first time and the game just flies! My computer has never liked 'huge' maps. CMBS does even better in that regard that CMRT, which was a huge improvement over earlier title.

MikeyD got a reaction from agusto in Hit Decals!
The combination of hit decals with ERA boxes does seem to confuse matters somewhat. You see exploded ERA boxes with a nice non-penetrating hit decal beneath it, or sometimes there's no exploded ERA box and no hit decal on top of it - BUT you find an exit hole out the back!

"isn't the stock terrain texture the same as in CMRT?" It depends on your definition of 'stock terrain'. Roads are modern, pavement is modern, houses and bridges are modern , telephone poles and street signs are changed. Yes, birch leaves are still birch leaves. I don't know how a 2017 birch leaf would differ from a 1944 birch leaf.

MikeyD got a reaction from gunnersman in Is it best to leave a "TC" with the BMP2?
I was just play a scenario yesterday, I forgot which one,  where Russians were rolling in the direction of my Ukrainian bmps. I hastily grabbed the nearest unit, split them and sent a team into the BMP so they'd have some commander 'eyeballs' to scout for targets. I unbuttoned them too so the commander would be heads-up. A very dangerous move considering the number of snipers but BMP-2 is previous-generation and doesn't have the best situational awareness in the best of times.
