Ain't there no classical history buffs out there?

That's the ancient Roman symbol for authority, literally a bundle of rods for whipping and an axe for executing. It was carried ceremonially before a judge(?) in processions to symbolize his authority.

I can't recall the actual name of the thing, though.

Not judges, lictors, who are more like officers of the court.

Its called a Fascii (spelling may be incorrect) as a previous poster stated. Its a bundle of rods tied together with an axe head. The theory behind it is that many thin rods together have more strength than one big piece of wood. I believe it was also a symbol of fascism in italy.

It dates back to roman times if im not mistaken.
