Since Russian is not my native tongue does anyone know what Vlad was being told about these Russian soldiers?

Battlefront.com
Let's keep it civil and respectful. Do that and we have a productive thread. Otherwise the heavy hand of the moderator will smack some backsides. Well since the game is set to portray current events in future by 2017+ the Russian soldier may very well look and dress differently than what is currently shown in pictures from Crimea. Here is a video showing an inspection by Putin of latest personal equipment of the Russian soldier. It appears that much of the viable parts of the Ratnik system (soldier's personal kit) is already being issued. Some of it is visible in Crimea already. There's a few bits and bobs to come, but if you look at the most well equipped Russians in Crimea that's pretty much what to expect from our game. Minus the balaclavas and with the addition of national identification Some aspects of Ratnik are either never going to see the light of day, may come much later than 2017, or will be limited to special forces. We are discussing this internally and I think we've got a good handle on it. Steve
Buzz
So Russian's Land Warrior - the Future Force Warrior program? integrate small arms with high-tech equipment; provide communications and command and control at the infantry soldier level; look at the individual infantry soldier as a complete unit rather than as a segment of a larger force. Respectfully... The lady in the line up is for "the PR show" .. right? Does Russia actually have women in the fighting force on the front lines with their men?

Battlefront.com
So Russian's Land Warrior - the Future Force Warrior program? No. Ratnik is a total makeover for the Russian soldier, including such mundane things as socks. Several components of Ratnik, however, are similar to the Land Warrior/Stryker Warrior/Future Warrior (and whatever else they decided to call it next year) program and long standing US stuff that is actually in the field. Specifically the helmet mounted HUD with camera on the gun, thermal scope, various bits of radio equipment, ruggedized squad computer, Blue Force Tracker type system, etc. Most of this stuff will likely not make it into the field any time soon. The technology is on the outside edge of Russian mass production capabilities, the cost is likely too high for mass fielding, and (like other nations) some stuff just won't work well enough to enter production. At best some of it will find its way into special forces use. Steve
Buzz
Thanks for the explanation Steve. An awful lot of uber tech equipment on the folks in the video. I also wondered how they were going to make all these gadgets for the many thousands of Comrades and someone has to pay for all this. Sell more oil & gas I guess.
Tank Hunter
Here is an article about Ratnik, according to the article Russian Ministry of Defence claims that Ratnik will be deployed among troops this summer. It doesn't go into details of every part but it describes what Ratnik includes which should provide an idea of how a Russian soldier should be modeled in CMBS. A lot of the equipement mentioned can be seen in the video with Putin. It cannot however be concluded if the equipement shown durin Putin's inspection is something of a 2nd or 3rd gen Ratnik. http://kitup.military.com/2014/02/russia-upgrades-soldiers-standard.html Video of Ratnik http://www.military.com/video/guns/rifles/the-ratnik-future-soldier-system/2759276231001/ According to this article it will take around 5 years to supply Ratnik to all armed forces http://voiceofrussia.com/2013_07_12/Russian-troops-to-receive-new-battle-suit-Ratnik-9990/ My guess would be that VDV is first out along with SF. More on Ratnik http://voiceofrussia.com/2014_03_19/Ratnik-gear-will-make-Russian-troops-fully-fledged-soldiers-of-the-future-1851/ http://en.ria.ru/military_news/20131020/184248906.html
Buzz
"Together with the helmet and remaining gear the Ratnik ensemble weighs about 20 kilograms." 44 pounds of Ratnik gear! Fast may not be fast for very long in CMBS.
Tank Hunter
Minus the balaclavas and with the addition of national identification Steve Steve, What's your take on the balaclavas? It appears that they are included as standard issue with Ratnik. In current Crimea events all soldiers are wearing them which probably has to do with the fact that they are "not Russian" more than it being a field requirement. Could it be so that Balaklava is issued for use in colder temperature? Why not include a balaclava face with the standard faces? Maybe make it random, or based on temperature or selectable in QB/Scenario Editor just like you can do with uniforms?
Erwin
The Russians probably want to make CM programming graphics easier since it won't require so much work to do a bunch of guys in balaclavas. If you add in the goggles so no eyes needed, much easier.
Stagler
It wont be hard to do a retexture of the heads as balaclava heads.
agusto
The Russians probably want to make CM programming graphics easier since it won't require so much work to do a bunch of guys in balaclavas. If you add in the goggles so no eyes needed, much easier. So the easiest thing for CMSF 2 would be to have a faction of female islamist fighters in burkas. No textures except dark black are needed, not movement animations for arms, legs or facial expressions as well. They would also be perfectly camouflaged in urban terrain:
Erwin
Yes, I was going to say that. But, I thought it would be questionable so thought better of it. I know quite a lot about female oppression and misogyny in a cleric-dominated society. I live in Utah.
agusto
Without question religiously motivated female oppression must be fought.
Tank Hunter
I wonder if we will have something like this in CMBS since VDV will most likely take part in the game? Yes that is an air-droppable church!!
Tank Hunter
It wont be hard to do a retexture of the heads as balaclava heads. I guess not, especially now with the fact that you can create mods for specific scenarios in ver 3.0
Tank Hunter
I also wonder if Arena will be modeled. Here is a pretty good video showing how it works If it makes into the game, remember to keep your infantry away from your tanks! You don't want to be close when that thing activates.
agusto
If my memory is correct, there is an active protection system in CM:A. It is called Drozd. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drozd
