ALBY reacted to Free Whisky in New Video: Domfluff gives us a guided tour through the wonderful world of Cold War Soviet doctrine
I asked Domfluff to help me out in creating a video about Soviet military doctrine in the Cold War era, and how those principles can be applied in a Combat Mission scenario/QB. He played a game against me as the Soviet Army, gave me an arse kicking, and then sat down with me and explained why he did what he did. The result is the video down below!

It is like a smart phone. You share your information with any other unit in the formation. Transmission is by satellite, I was out of C2 with the platoon HQ but the company HQ received the intel before the platoon HQ.

I recently used the newer ClipChamp (from Microsoft) to put the final touches on a video I made a while ago about the real size and composition of an IN BN within CMBS.  This was partly for my own practice and partially to show, and suggest, how Battlefront could expand the T&EOs to provide a wider range of scenarios and the flavor objects that may be good to add someday.

    Hey Kevin,
I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot as well. Especially for quick battles in the stock game where the rarity for certain equipment is not reflective of reality (since the game came out so long ago and isn’t necessarily supposed to be realistic in that way).
Since the current war in Ukraine started I have been fairly regularly keeping up with videos covering it and I’ve seen a lot of the equipment that is being used along with some researching of equipment numbers.
From what I can tell, the vehicles and equipment that should be used on the Russian side are these:
-BMP-2 (by far the most common Russian IFV in service in Ukraine right now)
-Note that BMP-2Ms have been seen and destroyed but they are much, much more rare than standard BMP-2s
-BMP-3 (a fairly common IFV, you can see many pictures and videos of knocked out ones at least)
-BMP-3M (these are more rare than the base BMP-3 from what I’ve seen but telling them apart in a wreckage picture is difficult)
-Note that BMP-3Ms have not been spotted with ERA plates from what I’ve seen, and no APS or Shorta systems either
-BTR-82 and 82A (both variants of very common but from high level research on the internet it looks like there are more BRR-82a in service, note that I haven’t seen any BTRs equipped with the 14.5mm machine gun as seen in the game)
-MTLB (these are very common but note the other variants of the MTBs with heavy MGs and auto cannons are absent in the war from what I’ve seen)
-TIGR Cars (have been seen everywhere in the war)
-T-72B3 (this is the most common tank in the game -and real life I think- that Russia uses. Note there have been no reports of APS on these)
-T-90A (this is a pretty rare tank compared to the T-72B3
-T-90MS (It is confirmed through video evidence that there are some T-90MS’ being used but this would be ultra rare but again, probably no APS)
-All of the other vehicles and equipment like drones, cars, trucks, mortars and artillery have been seen throughout the conflict in large numbers
If anyone is still interested in this topic I’ll post what I’ve found for the Ukrainian Army in the war as well. This one is a lot more difficult because the vehicles/equipment currently being used by them is extensive but the in-game vehicles/equipment is limited.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

ALBY reacted to Hapless in ... a constructive simulation called Combat Mission, showed that civilian gamers with no military training outperformed military officers with years of experience
I had a much longer rambling post, but gave up on it, so TLDR:

How many tactical decisions does a junior officer make in a year? Not a lot. Exercises are expensive and time consuming, training objectives must be met, freeplay is rare, scripting is prevalent.
    vs
How many tactical decisions do you make in an average CM game? How many do you make in an average CM turn? All that micromanagement from battalion to fire team level? Endless tactical decision making.
Naturally, decision-making and execution are very, very different. And CM is by no means 100% realistic. But it's probably realistic enough, especially integrated into a full on professional military syllabus. If nothing else, it's a lot safer and cheaper to 'fail forward' in CM than it is on exercise or- God forbit- the real deal.

OK, I've done a lot of stupid things playing Combat Mission, but this one takes the cake:
Playing a great PBEM game in which I was doing really well.  I only had two tanks.  A pair of Stugs and I moved both of them up to take out one of my enemies' Shermans.  Moved my first one right up, found his Sherman and POW! up goes his Sherman in flames. Drunk on my victory I move my second Stug up to look for another Sherman he has poking around and BAM! right into my own minefield. 😵 My Stug is completely destroyed.
That has to be the stupidest thing I've done in Combat Mission I think, but no, its not over.  My first tank, the one that took out the Sherman has also, just barely, entered the minefield.  So I delicately back up and KABOOM! another mine goes off destroying the tank.  And that's it.  Both my Stugs I destroyed myself in my own minefield.  That has to be the stupidest thing I've ever done in Combat Mission. 😳
Anyone else willing to share and help me reduce my shame? 🙏

They are about to cross the field (after the ridge) toward the settlement. The field is possibly littered with RU petal mines. So, APCs drive forward (behind tanks), detonate mines, drag away any wire obstacles and infantry run along the APC track to avoid mines.
[UPDATE] It is what UKR author of video said.

    Ref YPR in action,
I surprised at the tightly Placed lines of men. Looks like they're about to rapidly advance. It also implies no fear of RUS drone observation and/or accurate/timely RUS arty strikes.  The tension is palpable, they're about to go into it.

Totally agree. Reducing the tedium and increasing performance should be the main goals. Maybe a couple extra features. All graphics does is slow down development time.
If you have a unit that will be meeting resistance, you should be able to set a speed, plot your waypoints and that unit should be able to fight anything it spots and keep going when it loses the spot.  Trained spotters should be able to control multiple batteries. None of this adjust one battery and adjust all bull****. You should be able to call artillery anywhere but you have a substantial penalty to accuracy if the observer has no line of sight. Counter battery should be a factor. If you fire your artillery for too long there is a chance it will be taken out by the enemy. You should be able to set a massive area for aircraft to go guns free. Battalion level engagements should run at 60fps

There was a bug with the Gill missing that has been fixed a while ago.
Never underestimate the abilities of conscripts to make a hash of things, like locking the Gill's seeker onto a hot rock instead of the tank they were trying for.

As part of our in-house campaign, Near Peer Simulations is designing CM maps from real world locations, sat imagery, topographical data and refining the final steps for our in-house process for coverting RGB into CSV formats to then utilize as editor overlays displaying raw elevation numbers relative to 8 meter grids.

This is the result. Currently it is for Professional Edition, with work ongoing for a Black Sea public release. This will be the official thread when that release is available. Attached are screenshots showing the terrain as well as the QB Maps for open source. If you have Professional Edition, it is a plug and play. If you wish to help crack the conversion you may download the files and give it a go.

Part of what we do is ensure that all content that can be utilized in the publicly available titles, will be free of charge and released with no strings attached. You may edit as your heart desires.
