To be fair there are excellent soviet doctrine training scenarios in the game that should help you out. The briefing includes a list of reference materials for the same. The US field manuals are all available online too and full of great information. It would be great if there was a bit more info in the manuals but it’s not like the info isn’t out there.

Shoot and scoot maneuvers are possible to some degree. ATGM vehicles do not fire ATGMs if waypoints are still available. So you can not give the order to drive from a hidden position into a hull down position, give a pause order of some seconds and then go reverse into the hidden position, as the vehicle will not fire ATGMs from the paused waypoint. At least not as the game is done right now, because of engine limitations.
But there is a work around, if you give a pause order in the hidden position first, then drive up to the hull down position, so that the vehicle will stand there for about 10-15 seconds, before the turn ends, then it will shoot, as there are no following waypoints ahead. You can then drive reverse into the hidden position in the beginning of the next turn, to perform a full shoot and scoot maneuver.

You can’t as far as I am aware. I make a rough sketch of the AO and mark where I’ve placed them for later. Doesn’t have to be very accurate, close enough usually reminds me where it was located.

Part II - following on from the above.
Once the enemy security outpost was eliminated the platoons swapped out and a fresh platoon carried forward the attack, whilst the lead platoon, tended to their wounded, re-orged and rearmed and took up position as the reserve.
By this stage some armour support in the shape of three Panthers had joined the attacking force. They all rolled forward.

The enemy supporting positions that had revealed their location attempting to support their security outpost were taken under fire from the supporting 105mm 'Wespe' battery.
Whilst the defenders were pinned down the assaulting SPW platoon drove onto the enemy position.
Under covering MG fire from their SPW the grenadiers assaulted forward to clear the foxholes.

it was not all straightforward. Some defenders rather than cowering in the bottom of their foxhole actively and effectively engaged the attacking grenadiers.

Yup , I also remember, I get 2 activations , I think I can download as any times as necessary. But steam looking better , if after I purchase it , I hit a download button on their email and it pops up on my desktop without giving me a chance to screw it up. I think maybe original files corrupted with the multi transfers between internet explorer and wordpad

Yeah it’s the green dot that was really confusing. I’ve been playing these games for almost 20 years on and off and never noticed it before but I only played the WW2 titles and always use runners and 2ICs etc to maintain contact and share info.

If off map (deleted) HQs are providing C2 this may be a bug.  HQs are not like artillery that can work from off map (in the game).  If HQs are deleted they have not, in the past, been in the C2 loop.  Even HQs that are set to show up as reinforcements don't provide C2 until they appear on map.
My understanding is:  The off map (deleted) Company HQs should not be in C2 and should not show the green C2 dots.   The off map (deleted) Battalion HQs should not be in C2 and should not show the green C2 dots.
I just tested this in other titles and deleted HQs don't provide C2.  However I think deleted Battalion HQ have always showed the green C2 dot in all titles even though they do not provide off map C2.
In CMCW I have been trying to get deleted company HQs to provide C2 but have not been able to replicate that.  However the green C2 dot does appear next to the company in the UI.  IMO the deleted company should not provide C2 and the C2 dot should be red.

I believe this is correct.  This is why we use liaisons and runners in some scenarios.  This is one of the cool / interesting things about Combat Missions.  It has been this way in all titles for as long as I can remember.  It is confusing that the deleted Battalion HQ displays a green C2 dot.
Can information be shared between two different HQs that do not have a common higher HQ?  (Higher HQ deleted or not yet arrived as a reinforcement)
Vertically: No (With no common higher HQ there is no bridge for the information to pass over)
Horizontally: Yes with liaisons, runners or if the HQs are within about 32 meters of each other.
If a scenario designer wanted to have a platoon or company "cut off" from both physical and radio contact he has this choice.  If deleted HQs always provided C2 this "cut off" choice would be eliminated.

I read the Mantis report.  PM sent.
Another odd thing is that HQs in CMSF break radio C2 while moving on foot with 2008 technology.  HQs in CMCW do not break radio C2 while moving on foot with 1979-1982 technology.  Of course, in all WW2 titles HQs break radio C2 while moving on foot.

I've found this is where your 2IC/command teams come in handy. If battalion HQ is off-grid then using these HQ elements (as you mention) as radio links/liaison officers helps maintain the net and info share. Also works if you have a cross attached unit that is not part of the battalion radio net.

I performed one more test over the last couple of days and if you leave the Batallion HQ off map but include the Company HQs the info is not shared via the net between companies, so if you want info to flow you need all the relevant HQs on map, unless you're happy having runners or positioning guys with radios near each other's companies.

It works on the company net if they are off map but not at battalion level. It’s quite misleading as the lights are all green and the platoon HQs all have the radio icon in their audio comms box which makes me think everything would be shared. I haven’t tested but this may be affecting the entire engine and could well be the intended behaviour, perhaps @BFCElviscan advise.
I’ll certainly be making sure they are on map from now on in QBs and won’t delete them so I can squeeze in an extra vehicle or artillery.

If there are C2 links off-map, they'll take longer to communicate. With both the company and battalion commander off-map, that'll take longer still.

Even if there's no hard coded degradation of timing here (which is something I haven't tested, but does seem to be the case), then an on-map battalion commander can receive multiple strands of information, whilst the off-map commander will not - consider something like a battalion commander standing next to their 2IC, they might be transferring spots through the radio net, but also getting anything horizontally from the 2IC unit, and this kind of incidental thing can add up, possibly by accident.

I haven't seen anything particularly unusual about the Cold War spotting or information sharing (aside from the M113 bug, obviously). I *do* find it amusing that most of the early complaints about the title were alternately "BMP spotting is far too good" and "My BMPs are totally blind".

I'm reasonably sure it would be the same for the US but in the British Army of the time, platoons will be on a company net so as soon as the sighting platoon sends in their contact/sighting report every platoon and the company HQ would have the information.  Battalion would be a different net so passage upwards would be from the company HQ on the battalion net which also goes sideways to all of the other callsigns on that net (i.e., the other companies in the battalion).  I can't speak for the Soviets as I am nowhere near my reference materials but I don't think it was that much different.

Yeah I expected that but nothing in 58 minutes? Like I said it may be I’m expecting too much. Will have to do another test with them on map and see if that makes a difference.

I have a 4 year old that likes getting up at 5:30 every morning and a 1 year old who’s teething and up a few times a night. It’s killing us

58 minutes would be a problem, and sounds like a broken link somewhere. That's definitely worth testing in clean conditions.

Oh It absolutely could be me being impatient, Cold War is the first non-WW2 title I've played so I would just shrug and wait in the WW2 games but cos it was modern-ish I was expecting it to be a lot quicker, based on no experience of course  I was hoping someone with knowledge of how it worked IRL back then would provide some answers cos I'm sleep deprived (kids) and therefore lazy. Sounds like I need to find some time to do the research, thanks for the response.

I was thinking about that but some of them are in color.  I may start a thread to see if there is enough interest for Battlefront to add an option.  I really wish I had bought them now.

Yeah, and that is certainly possible. There are veterans from that era around here. My own impressions, again not based on experience, is that the 70s and 80s did have better and more reliable equipment the actual tracking of information was still done with the same tech as in WW2. I would not expect a significant difference in spotting contact information spreading. But again I don't really have any expertise either.

I dunno - when I had the time and stamina for H2H, PBEM was excellent.
Some of us live in radically different timezones to the USA - TCP/IP would have eliminated most potential opponents.
