Anyway as for in-game I recall one of my first encounters with IS2s (Gog and Magog I think) - perhaps it agrees with what you're saying as the 88mm L/71s on my KTs certainly could penetrate the IS2s' fronts at some distance, unlike the above data.  Not quite the same, but more recently my opponent in Cat and mouse with 75mm L/70 Panther guns had no trouble achieving penetrations either.  My IS2s prevailed on that day however...

This is how my mod looks in game, make sure you do not have any other weapon mod that replaces this rifle in your Z folder, or just put a z in front of my mod folder name.

I may be wrong but I think they will 'move as riflemen' and fight with their rifles, but they will still be carrying the out-of-ammo 60mm mortar. 
It's only a small encumbrance 😉.

The commanders in the following tanks forgot their goggles and on top of being blinded,  they are now breathing dirt too.  


 

Example that a tank is not always easy target for drone dropped HEDP and thermobaric grenades. ERA and weakness of charge makes own work, if this is not sniper drop in open hatch or lucky hit in engine area. 
Here compilation of several drone attempts to finish of abandoned Russian tank. HEDP and two thermobaric grenades in the puddle of fuel can't set the tank on fire. Only last dropped thermobaric grenade penetrated inside the turred and caused fire. Several grenades were defeated by ERA - it's good seen how blocks dissapeared afer activation. But in one case ERA didn't activate 
 

Apart from 'can you do better than history?' scenarios I hear what you're saying.  A re-enactment of the fall of Berlin has likewise failed to excite me as there will only be one winner, but I mean no disrespect to those trying to recreate it.

From an application technological standpoint, what could change in CM3? Not era nor theater, but technology. For example, might CM3 be a Windows application?
I realize this is all speculation and the people who do know belong to a secret society and are sworn to secrecy.

I've often wondered why I've never done anything with the Germans in CMBN because they're my favourite WW2 wargaming side (Japan being a close second in a strategic wargame). I really enjoy playing as the German in Panzer Corps and Unit of Command 2 up until 1943 and then I lose interest and would prefer to play as the Allies from 44 onwards. So perhaps it's just that I want to play as the side with the strategic initiative as there are so many interesting options to explore there.
I guess it's really old to say this by now but I really wish BFC had gone back to 1941 to do the Russian Front and work forward instead of 1944 (of course I understand why this was done - the ability to recycle unit models and formations for one side so that they only had to make everything for the Russians who fortunately sported some lend-lease kit which was also already done.) Had that been done, I'd probably have done nothing but German WW2 campaigns as 1941-43 is where the excitement is at for me, especially 41.
Unfortunately, I've never managed to find the enthusiasm to make a German CMBN campaign as there are severe limitations to what can be done with them and to find a situation and craft a core force which could feasibly survive several missions. Some what-ifs could be interesting - what if Rommel had had his way and the Panzer divisions were positioned closer to the beaches? But I just can't see any real chance of driving the Allies out of Normandy as their completely mastery of the air would make that nearly impossible to achieve. I'd imagine that the Allies would have responded devastatingly had an existential threat emerged to the invasion so I don't see how it could have changed much except to make the victory more costly for all parties.

I think the M26 had a certain amount of what the US called HVAP but if I remember most of this ammo was distributed to TD units (M36).

Yeah, me too I suppose. I'd certainly be dismayed to start all over again at Normandy in CM3 since I'd like to see them get around to covering the whole war eventually. And starting back at the start line (Normandy) over and over again isn't a very efficient way to get to the finish line (the whole war). But I'd still buy it. And I'd still enjoy the hell out of it.

If it makes you feel better, when I played that, the Pershings didn't have a lot of trouble with Tiger Is unless they were angled just right.
