This is some good footage. I have actually seen this before except that the first part was cut, where it shows them driving towards their objective. I have been mapping this area for fun and knew they reached the dachas across the road from Vuhledar proper and even the gas station there at some point, before being repelled but I was wondering how they managed to actually get there in the first place and which way the attack came from. Very useful.

Okay, that's it uploaded. The picture failed to load but I don't care about that too much at this point.
    https://www.thefewgoodmen.com/tsd3/cm-shock-force-2-2/cm-shock-force-2-campaigns/cmsf2-usmc-gung-ho/
This is a six mission campaign featuring Bravo Company of 1st Battalion 8th Marines. I should mention that it's a rework of my much earlier CMSF1 campaign of the same name but it's so reworked that it's really an all-new campaign that takes advantage of all the CMSF2 features. You'll need the NATO module to play this as the Syrian Airborne features in one of the missions. Sorry about that but I guess most folks reading here already have the full Monty.
It's designed primarily to have fun with one of the most unique factions in the game, the USMC, a light infantry formation that punches far above its weight even without the air support that you'll have in these missions. It should also be quite challenging but not too challenging. Mission 3 - CAAT among the Pigeons is intended to be very easy, to allow you to let rip with a rather unique formation within the MEU.
I look forward to hearing how you get on. Perhaps you can tell me how many kills HITMAN got in your campaign? You're not beta testing this - I've already played this myself but that's a potential issue, it's been tested by one player with a particular play style and skill set. I try to break these missions but I'm not as creative about that as some of you will be  If you find any typos, let me know. I've been scanning the texts these last couple of days and can't see any but that's likely fatigue. Unless something egregious is found, you should be safe to complete a campaign before a revision comes up. I'm hoping that won't necessary but I've done this before and it can always be improved.
With the exception of CAAT among the Pigeons, each mission has several AI plans to give the campaign replayablity. So, if there's enough interest in it, I will return to this to make a new version featuring the German Gebirgsjagers which look like they'd be a blast to play with as well and not need much work to be done beyond making a core unit file and importing the units into each mission. And finally, I want to make a Brit forces Light Infantry version but that will need more work to do.

    1. Smoke screens used by mortars and with smoke grenades for local purposes. In this war we have seen multiple clashes of relatively small units (maximum 1-2 reinforced companies, very rare whole battalion at once) on relatively longer front line, than in WWII and as it was intended in Cold War times. In order to set so large smoke screen you have to concentarte enough number of artillery pieces - maybe even a battlion. This is too risky - to gather many assets in one place for long time. So, on battalion level usual mortars or armor can set smoke for local needs. Though, I have seen one video with artillery shot several smoke shells. Usually videos are filming to show elimination of the enemy, but smoke is not interesting.
Except artillery there were in use special vehicles smoke-generators like TDA, from composition of CBRN-protection units. But they have speciphic tasks, for example to cover the bridge or crossing or some object.
    2. We discussed this question as far as in 2014-2015. But in this time enough number of UKR BMPs and especially BMDs, have driven with launchers on the top. But gradually ATGMs were almost desappered. Just specific of this war turned out them mostly useless. Also in 2014 many mobilized BMP gunners had poor training in ATGM shooting (the same thing was in separatists forces and often in Russian army). In current war is no sense to keep BMPs on first line to repelling of tank hordes. Even no sence to set portable launcher from it pack. The role of close AT-weapon crossed to infantry AT-assets like NLAW and Javelin, which have much more effectiveness, than old Konkurs. Also during ATO/OOS we probably used lot of Fagot/Konkurs missiles (and then so far many of them were outdated and often didn't work properly). Though, we still see Fagots and even Metises in the hands of infantry.
Russian side doesn't use launchers on-the-top by the same reason. Though, I've seen several times they used portable launchers of BMP/BMD pack.
Since 2014 and to present time I've seen maybe about dozen+ videos of ATGM usage by light armor and only in two applications - a launch from covered position when there is enough guaranties that you wil not be spotted first and attack of bunker or truck (some shots were in the night). But I never seen that BMP shot ATGM in "cavalry-style" meeting engagements or being in LOS of enemy tank or hypotetical ATGM in tree-line.

Those rules are there for very good reasons and they protect the potential new members just as much as they protect those already in the club. Nothing wrong with having Ukraine enter EU when they are ready. I personally doubt that right now Ukrainians fight this war to get into EU instead of defending themselves against a Russian invasion and to prevent more Buchas. But I don't know, maybe our Ukrainian forumites here can comment. If the only way to have peace is Zelensky lying to his electorate about a rose tinted future they can have right now if they just accept peace then maybe this is a really, really bad idea. Germany has experience with one country joining a club unprepared being promised consumer heaven and a flourishing economy. It was not an awesome experience for West Germany but a traumatizing experience for many East Germans that has negative effects even after 30 years the reunification.

Not really. On the video covering the first part, the attack actually opens with a Russian firing a RPG round into the trench. Also, you can see some of them having RPG22/26 on their backs. As to why are they not shooting against the UKR BMP and Tank, I suppose because either the RPG gunners were KIA/WIA by the artillery (rewatching said video, yeah, the guy with the RPG surely catched shrapnel from an artillery hit), or the Ukranians were able to quickly gain fire supperiority vs the Russians, and getting to fire an RPG with a 30mm cannon firing at you has to be a harsh proposition. Also the tanks just "appear" on the video, and we cannot see them actually approaching to those positions, so as far as we know the russians could had been the first to fire their RPGs, however, as you all should know, they are hardly a 100% hit weapon (there was a video the other day of a group of Russian infantry shooting to a tank with their RPGs, and having all of their shots fall short of the tank, it could have easily happened the same here as well).

Three maps in Estonia one in Latvia.
All the maps in this mini pack are based on google earth satellite images, photos and also street view when available, not historical maps. So obviously these locations were not identical during ww2. I however tried to downgrade the type of roads when I thought it made sense, on rare occasions removed a couple of houses or farms here and there but for the most part they're as accurate as I could make them.
Some have attack or meeting engagement setups, some are raw (no deployment zones or objectives). The latter will require a little bit of work to be playable.
I tried as much as possible to frame the maps so they're versatile and can be used in various ways: both for meeting engagements and attacks. But there are also usually several possible setups that you could use i.e different directions for the attack with potential objectives and road in all cardinal directions. There is often not just one single way to play them.
It should be noted that most of these maps, except Talvikese which is fairly open with rural terrain, are basically dirt roads going through forests, marshy ground and lakes. So it can be very easy if played as attacks or assaults to block the roads with anti tank mines depending on the deployment zones. So you could just have infantry battles, have an agreement with your opponent to limit the usage of mines or even modify the terrain a little bit by replacing marshy ground with mud or something else where needed. Or just play them as is. It is up to you.

A good number of Ukrainians did fight for the Germans at the start of the war. And many Ukrainians were in the Ost-Battalions at Normandy (Although their alternative was likely starving to death in pow camps, as over 1/2 of Soviet pows died in German captivity). However, and contrary to modern Russian propaganda, by the late stages of the war the overwhelming majority of Ukrainians fighting fought for the Red Army. Ukraine was disproportionally affected by the general plan for the east, so a lot of Ukrainians chose the Soviets as the lesser of two evils. Ukrainians were instrumental in defeating the Nazis. If I remember correctly, the soldier planting the flag above the Reichstag in that famous photo had Ukrainian descendants but was born in Kazakhstan. The Ukrainians sacrificed a lot because they knew they would be wiped out if the Germans won. They acted heroically, and I would say their efforts greatly, or even decisively, helped in defeating the Nazis.

The pipeline was one of the last diplomatic cards that Putin had on hand to put political and economic pressure on Europe.
The explanations I've seen about why he would decide to throw away that card while trying to wage energy war during the winter seem very contrived to me.
That said, I'm waiting for any evidence before making up my mind about it. Some "anonymous source" is not good enough.

Oh I am not going to venture out a guess about the fate of Bakhmut. I am just trying to get a better sense of the situation on the ground. Yeah soldiers grumbling and complaining is pretty much part and parcel of any conflict. You obviously need to take it with a pinch of salt. It is just that sometimes it is easy to get a distorted or partial picture of the events with the way the war is portrayed in the media. It can easily become a caricature or a meme. I thought the article did a good job of highlighting some of the issues on the Ukrainian side. Russian woes and failures are well known.
You follow the tiktok war, watch enough combat footage of drones stalking hapless Russians acting like bumbling fools and soon you get this mental view of the Ukrainian army being almost omnipotent, highly flexible and reactive and then you see this:

For anyone interested in the historical context, the three maps in Estonia are more or less situated right on the path of the Russian 67th and 1st guard armies operating under the 3rd Baltic front who launched their offensive from Pskov, south of the lake Peipus, towards the town of Pechory in august 44. Basically during the first half of 1944 the red army had tried in vain to attack on the Narva isthmus. With Bagration in full swing, the German retreat and the transfer of troops to army group centre, it became possible to bypass the Narva position.
The Russian offensive then progressed along a north west axis toward Tartu which eventually forced the now outflanked German Narva grouping to pull back. It is also worth noting that the Russians conducted an amphibious assault across the narrowest part of the lake Peipus with a flotilla of 40 small vessels.
On the German side, lots of troops were poorly equipped and trained Estonian militias. But naturally the German army counterattacked with units like the Nordland division from the III ss panzer corps and later army group north sent von Strachwitz and his kampfgruppe to strike the flank of the Russian 1st guard army. Strachwitz had however an unfortunate Kubelwagen accident who killed all passengers except him but left him with a fractured skull.

Yes, very sad video w/o Eng subs. It's alot of information about Wagners tactic in close fighting from "first hands"
     - Wagners are attacking continously, not with "human waves", but sending sqaud+ / platoon+ assault groups one by one with intervals in 40-50 minutes after failed attempt. Such assaults can last from several hours to several days without a break and almost all this time is a contact rifle/grenade fighting from 100 to 15..20 meters. This heavily exhausting for defenders psyhology (and this says the guy of extreme motivated unit, so what you can expect from usual UKR soldier of usual rifle battalion with his symbolic training?) Also these protracted assaults eat ammunition very fast, which create additional load on logistic and caused often jams of weapon, because soldiers, repelling endless attacks, often hadn't a time to maintain it properly.
    - Wagners usually try to attack in joint areas between units. Coordination between neighbours on their flanks always was weak place, because units often havn't clear sectors of responsibilities on their edges and when enemy attack, each unit usually thinks that developments in neighbours sector.
    - Wagners often attack in the night or at least tried to sneak very close to positions, using features of terrain around Bakhmut - dense tree-palnts and bushes, multiple ravins ets.
    - if positions of enemies too close each from other, Wagners rare support their troops with artillery, but instead they have unlimited access to heavy infantry weapon support lilke mortars, AGS, SPG, HMGs. Often our positions are showered with AGS/ 82 mm mortar fire and while next salvo incoming and  UKR troops taking cover, in theese moment, assaulters make their decisive burst to trenches and try to seize it.
    - one of methods of Wagners spotting if drones are busy or not available - they send in the night groups of spotters (usually 2 mens) with one NV/thermal. They can sneak too close to our positions - even on 20-30 m and adjust arty/ mortar/ AGS fire. If group is eleminated, next one comes immediately.
    - despite Wagner commanders used "smart mob" tactic, controlling plan of attacks own "live pixeltruppen" via tabs with special soft, but anyway their movements also are formulaic. Soldier told assault groups, which changed each other always met in one point and some time had talks. Even after they were hit several times in this area, thet didn't change own routes. Likely commander decided this is shortest way to support tempo of pressure, and exactly this matter, not lives of convicts.
    - convicts really act like zombie, because they havn't way back without order or because of wound. Among goods of killed Wagners soldiers found some unknown pills, which probably are some drugs or psychotrops, which suppress fear and even some feels. Our soldiers told - Wagners can lay three hours on the cold ground and then to rise and attack. PS - among Russian TG talks about this told almost in open, that Wagners drink special "coctails", whith similar effect.

Someone posted some great artwork in the "How hot is Ukraine gonna get"-thread and I decided to make a menu mod from one.

Not in line with the game timeline, but I've seen some "Z"-mods around so maybe not that wrong after all. In the spirit of "Glory to Ukraine".
Get it from link below for now and maybe @Bootie can put it up on CMMODS.

Mini map pack for Battlefront Combat Mission Red Thunder
    --------------------------------------------------------------

    Description:

Feel free to use them for whatever you want. Simply credit me and provide a link to this thread.

    The maps:

1/ Estonia - Kapera (raw map)

    size: 1408 X 1072m

Not combat actually, but pics from (near) the frontline. Map is from latest Zverovboy1´s Baltic map/battle pack here: https://community.battlefront.com/topic/142405-baltic-mini-map-pack/ Forces is not from actual battle. Bits of spiced up with Reshade and some GIMP filters. German SS Engineers checking soft ground in front of an armored column.
