Why do we focus so much on the messenger rather than the message? Snowden doesn't matter. What matters is that unelected agencies have carte blanche to circumvent your rights and democracy. I guess nobody cares.

Been on vacation so i haven't had time to watch this, but was wondering if anyone else had the chance to see this army university press video - skimming the comments, seems like criticism is that they still want to overestimate Russian capabilities and think of them as near peers.

Are we talking the grenade tossing episode or combat coming from outside the incident?
“The LOAC states that as soon as those RA troops came “into the hands” or “under the power” of then UA troops the combat between these two parties was over because the RA troops were legally POWs.  Once the grenade was tossed the central question to be answered is whether that lone soldier was re engaging in combat in an act of perfidy? And/or was the rest of that RA soldiers unit also re engaging or had the intent to re-engage.
If the UA unit were to come under fire from a third RA unit, they actually have the obligation to protect and extract the RA POWs. And nothing in LOAC says they can mow them down because a third party is shooting at them.
Look, I get it.  Ukrainian members on the forum really want to promote that the UA kept its hands clean. However, unrighteous shoots happen in warfare all the time - this the a harsh reality of combat.  How a nation is judged is by how it responds to and ensures that any party who engages in these actions is prosecuted under a military legal system.  Here they are afforded full legal protections under domestic law and a fair trial that will take into account all factors.
Now if the UA is smart - and frankly I really think they very much are, far smarter than a few posters on this board - they will conduct an investigation etc with transparency etc, and the news cycle will move on with the footnote “Ukrainian authorities are investigating the incident in full and will share the results with its western partners”.  These sorts of investigations can take freakin months or years so we will be on to a new crisis before long while whatever this is fades to the background.
Or you can make a ton of counter-productive noise, bite the hand that is trying very hard - against some it it’s own electorates - to keep you from becoming a Russian province and provide a steady stream of sound bites for the pro-Russian crowd who are circling.

I have to admit I wish the people adding tasteless music to these clips would get drafted and sent to play a role in their own MTV videos.

I'm just halfway through this video, but it is really great. Author discussed three most important political philosophers of Ru regime (spoiler alert - no Dugin). I saw a few other of his videos and really recommend the whole channel.

They are not Ukraine skeptics.  They are enablers of authoritarianism.  They love Putin, they love Orban.  Let's not play word games.  They don't care about spending, or war, they care about supporting dictators.

Hopefully we won't need to pivot to China.  Hopefully US & China will make the smart decision and realize economy matters a lot more than some piece of land somewhere and to not kill the goose that lays golden eggs just for some nationalistic stupidity.

Main reason of my reduced activity is a work and some tiring from this 8-month information marathone Concerning to strike consequenses in our district of Kyiv - cell phones and internet still working. Main discomfort - there wasn't hot water for three days. Two days electricity was turning off at the morning for two hours and two days ago all our district has plunged into the darkness from 20:00 to 1:00 of next day. As I know Irpin' town was turning off completely on two days.
Just a look from my balcony after the strike at the district thermal plant. There was two very loud booms. Most dense smoke is from missed missile. I don't know what could burn with such dark smoke.

Well this is another OT tangent, but 'privatisation' of government has other names, really:  feudalism, oligarchy or monarchy.

Wow, that took some effort to catch up and what a time to do it, just as the kerch bridge gets smacked.  However although I'm liking all the theories of what did it, everyone has overlooked the main reason for all major russian mishaps in this war.
The extremely dangerous and explody act of smoking.  The smokers done it again, dropped his fag in the truck, rolled under the seat, set fire to highly flammable cheap chinese foam padding which then caused 152mm ammo to explode and blew up the bridge.  Case solved, call me Sherlock not Shirley.

I actually would like to find out that we've been deceived and that RU propaganda is correct for once.  Meaning I WISH there were 2 Polish brigades fighting there!  W NATO air cover.  yeah yeah yeah I know that's crazy & an escalation but jeebus that would be one fun CMBS module.  Poles finally get to punch back at Russian oppressors.

Well, if not nasty, maybe overly dramatic and rude.
Some of the briefings were written by scenario designers who speak English as a second language.  IMO they are very talented, intelligent multilingual individuals who donate their time for our Battlefront community.
Good teachers/instructors are often taught and trained how to interact with others to facilitate the passing on of information/knowledge.  If you are actually a teacher you hopefully had some of this type of training and continuing education.  It is a shame you didn't demonstrate very much teaching, influencing, mentoring ability in this forum.  Instead you are probably a good case study in how to quickly alienate, polarize and shut down positive communication.
Think of the knowledge and help you might have provided if your opening post was not so overly dramatic and rude.  Probably a squandered opportunity to be a positive influence.

You’re wrong. And being antagonistic does not help anyone or anything, especially yourself.

The LOD issues are being addressed in the first patch. In fact, I believe as of right now most of them are fixed.

The reason the game shipped with them is because, for techno wizardry reasons I will never understand, when the final release candidate was built, something caused some LODs to get a little wonky. We figured that it was not worth delaying the release of a game for a minor graphical issue that has no effect on gameplay, and only occurs on certain models and in lower graphics settings.

I think we made the right call. The response to Cold War has been overwhelmingly positive. And I think BFC hitting a release target has been very positive as well. Further, most feedback on bugs has been very polite and professional, and I think we have done a good job of responding and addressing these issues. A patch is being worked on as we speak that will fix these issues, and some other issues that were the result of very constructive feedback.

Jiggathebauce reacted to The_Capt in Idea for Cold War Module: Operation Unthinkable.
I kinda like this idea but to be honest it would be more of a mash-up between Final Blitz and Red Thunder, as opposed to a CW module. If they were to go this way, it probably would be the RT team to pull it together into a DCL for those other titles.  If Unthinkable happened the Cold War would have started later (if at all), this is really an extension of WWII.
If/when we move out on a DLC it is gong to remain in the 70s/80s context, I can say that much.

The respect I have for this game and the folks who put it together is immense, that scenario does exactly what was intended!
Can I also just mention how awesome it is that with a company this size and in this market, that the people who worked on it are accessible for conversation and advice to their customers and fellow enthusiast (especially when compared to big AAA corporate studios with layers of HR and PR people between us and the devs)

Maverick Pentagon planners at the time snidely dubbed the US doctrine in West Germany as 'Don't lose'. They were advocating for a far more aggressive counter-punching strategy but its doubtful that US warfighting material (pre-Abrams) was sufficiently superior to pull off that feat.
The objective of the B2F scenario is to have you feel what a Soviet assault on your defensive line would be like. If you aren't pooping your pants in fear at the initial artillery prep then it didn't do its job. Everything in the scenario's meant to heighten your anxiety, from the bad weather to the approaching enemy randomly area-firing into your position, to the spotty LOF, to the sounds of overhead planes circling.

If exposed infantry come under indirect fire, doctrine is to get the hell away from there as fast as possible.
Infantry in prepared positions (foxholes, trenches), can stay in place. The Hide command will get them to keep their heads down and increase survivability. They will still take some losses, but you'll have dug in for a reason, and you'll want to stay there.
Soviet HE in particular is not good at taking out vehicles (nor is it designed to). That means that you can mostly button up and ride out the attack. Open topped vehicles should relocate, as above. You might still suffer subsystem damage or immobilisations, but again, you're presumably sitting there for a reason (or else you'd leave).

It's worth considering what the purpose of the bombardment is. Any kills an artillery attack gets are secondary to the main point, which is suppression of your AT assets. That allows the Soviet armour to move into position to start puttig down effective fire.

If it's possible to hold a secondary position that would still control this ground, then sure, but the chances are that this wont be possible, or else the attack would be on a broader front.
That means that withdrawing from your defensive position is exactly what they want you to do.

This is where the principle of Active Defence really came from. This is the doctrine that the pre-1982 kit was designed for, and it's something of a reality with how disadvantaged the US are in 1979.
Similar to how you'd play the Syrians in CMSF, the basic plan would be a defence in depth - multiple pockets of resistance, which can support each other, and slowly bleed the attacker, inch by inch.
Active Defence was an attempt to take that concept, but apply it to a mechanised battlefield - rather than having fixed defences, instead having fluid positions that you fight and withdraw from, under cover from supporting positions. Fight, withdraw, fight. Part of the point of this was that it avoids the set-piece Soviet attack, since large set pieces are inherently inflexible.
This doctrine is also necessarily defensive in tone. When the US closed the technological gap and started to surpass the Soviets, the doctrine was able to change, and there was increased focus on proactive counterattack and disruption.
This is basically the narrative arc of CM:CW, and it really informs what you're doing throughout.
