Ever wonder if those annoying hits to one of your tanks main gun tube reflect real life? Well here you go. This Tiger commander is having a real bad day.

Had not played much CMFI lately so decided to mess around.
Set up a QB against the AI on a very small map and selected Italian infantry as my force against a AI attack using forces of its choice.
Normally I hate these things as to what they create.

So the battle starts and I quickly see I am against Canadians with Sherman V's and a little bit of supporting infantry.
I have MMG's and 45 MM mortars,  well perfect stuff to take on Armor, oh I did have two tanks, if you want to call them that. But hey, at least they had a chance of taking out the armor.
But I started this thing , so lets see what I can do with infantry and having to use them in close assaults verse armor.

It came out it had 8 Shermans, and about 20 men in brems and such.
I started hiding all my men behind walls, hedges and in grape vines.

Since the map was very small the AI kept the armor together as it moved to its objectives.
Thus doing a good job of covering its own units if and when I let the infantry attack.

But this turned into one of the funniest battles I have played in a long time. .
My armor only accounted for one enemy tank.
My infantry destroyed 3 Shermans and immobilized 4.
The MMg's kept what little infantry there was at bay.
I used the mortars on the tanks trying to help immobilize them. they accounted for one immobilization and maybe aided in one or 2 others.

In came down to swarming infantry on the armor and close assaulting (Too bad there is no graphics other than HG's flying. but they were busy doing that.)

It cost me 110 Italians, literally using ammo support troops on the mmg's as part of my attacks.

Bloody and fun - sometimes this game really delivers.

When I was done, It was like I started thinking, this would make a great scenario. What a mismatch .
(and amazed that what is or should be the weak side did have strength in only one thing, numbers, the number of men I had to throw at those tanks).

+1. May I lobby for some Frenchies in CMSF2? Or, if the family is definitely over, consider them for CMSF3.

As to the question of whether Churchill was a competent military strategist, well he was and he wasn't.
The invasion of Greece was a disaster, except... ...that it and the revolution Yugoslavia delayed the start of Barbarossa by just long enough to prevent Germany from winning in 1941.
The invasion of Italy, likewise, was a pointless, bloody adventure except... the collapse of Mussolini's government came at just the right time to break Hitler's nerve in the Battle of Kursk.
For a lousy strategist, he had an uncanny ability to choose strategies that had unpredictably beneficial outcomes.

This has probably been discussed before, but does anyone else want to see a CM title set in the early days of WWII? Mid and late war are pretty well covered, both by CM and other war games, the campaigns of 1939/1940 are practically ignored. The Winter War and invasion(s) of Poland would both make for great CMs in my opinion, maybe even one set during the Spanish Civil War (I consider it part of the Second World War, but that’s a discussion for another thread...)

I recall back when Steve first discussed plans to do a CMSF update. He said 'no mission creep!'. We were just going to update the game engine. Nothing new, nothing extra... Then we wound up going crazy and redoing EVERYTHING!   Usually, with CM products, 'good enough' means we've already gone the extra mile and exhausted ourselves in the process. Trying harder and eating up more resources isn't going to see a return on investment. That definition of the phrase is the opposite of 'slapdash'.

Well, ever attempted to take a developer POV? Even if I criticize BFC and raise my voice (sometimes), I never forget that they do great stuff and at last it´s THEIR game, THEIR vision of it and THEIR way doing things to THEIR liking! I see no reason to deny Scott Hamilton and his works the same rights. That´s the reason I´d never want to become a programmer or publisher. You just can´t do it right to all the "know it all better" folks who know nothing but their limited consumer views. The Jon Snow´s of wargaming world.
so quitting here now as well. HPS and related stuff is ****ty crap not worth the dirt under ones nails. And off course (as I wrote in my very first response) NOT comparable to BFC products beside it´s all wargaming sort of stuff.

I like the look and feel of CM much as it is, but I'd love more sophistication in the AI, especially for those who play against it.
I know it's probably difficult, but I'd like to see game-level AI that works less like clockwork and that responds to the player more.

Perhaps you could use this for one of the H&E scenarios.

Not a beauty but simple and resource friendly and thus more can be placed. For editor interaction the original flavor object is located on the see floor. I resized it to test if the fov issues go away but then the model got catapulted out of bounds. However for medium sized objects that are not always in point black front of the player its not that noticeable.
File is too big, I moved it to my dropbox.

Freyberg reacted to IICptMillerII in SF2 or Black Sea for first modern CM game?
SF2 is more forgiving. It is still a modern battlefield, so weapon systems are still hyper lethal. However it's definitely not on the same level of intensity that Black Sea is. My recommendation would be to get SF2 and play through some of the campaigns or scenario's to get a good feel for modern warfare (the equipment, capabilities, lethality, etc) against an opponent that will hurt you if you fail to follow the basic fundamentals, but otherwise is relatively easy to beat. Then, once you have a feel for modern warfare, go to Black Sea where everything is turned up to 11.
Of course, you could always just fling yourself into the deep end and get Black Sea first. Or just get both and go nuts.

Freyberg reacted to FoxZz in A plea for a French Army DLC
Well it would have made sense back then for sure, I think it would be a pity to make all the effort of creating the faction and implementing it in the previous game. Especially since a lot, I mean A LOT changed in the French army since then.I think gameplay wise it would also be more interesting to play the French against a challenging faction like the Russians, rather than against the Syrian army. French army would also be a nice contender against Russia in multiplayer, as it would be more on par with Russia than the US.
Lastly, from a political standpoint, Eastern Europe is a major point of interest for French diplomacy, it would be very unlikely for the fisrt military power on the continent, always talking about european defense, not to get involved in a conflict at the border of the EU. For example, France is taking part in the NATO task force in the Baltics, in the last Trident Juncture it was one of the main contributor, so it would probably send a sizeable force in Ukraine.

Things like specifying what to do when contact is made. For example that way you could have scouts behave differently from an assault team etc.
Actually not really. The main reason we do not have super flavor objects in game now is *not* because the game cannot support the models it is the way they are treated for spotting, pathfinding and fire. A flavour object representing an amusement park ride and a steel container should have very different properties in game but in CM2 the will all behave like a bus shelter. Getting large models into the game is pretty straight forward. Having them behave in a variety of ways is not.
So, it would be great to get all the supporting code in CM3 that would make arbitrary flavour objects possible. It would be a fun feature.

    What's an SOP?
With the brilliant work of Aquila-CM those things are nearer than you think. And functional, not just pretty pictures.  I also have felt that they are a necessity for modern combat, as well as large concrete buildings like offices, factories, hospitals, and particularly multi-storey car parks, which we now know can be converted into veritable fortresses and immune to most arty and airstrikes.

CM3 is as far beyond my imagining as the future CM2 had been back when I was playing CM1.
Wishing blindly for stuff this way, you're liable to either go 'too small' (make mere CM2-appropriate suggestions) or 'too big' (impossible fantasy suggestions). Something that's always been on my wish list has been 'super flavor objects'. Huge dominating flavor objects like locomotives or dockyard cranes or electrical power pylons. On the scale of things to wish for that might be considered 'chump change'. Like walking into a Michelin starred restaurant and ordering a burger and fries.
