  1. I wouldn't call it "nazi fanboism", however, the myth of the panzer is still well and truly alive today. Honestly I used be like a lot of those people when I was 15 or so, whenever I would lose a Tiger in company of Heroes I would be shocked! A tiger destroyed? No way! Go easy on them and try to teach them!
  2. Its a matter of personal preference honestly, download some of them and mix and match with other mods to find out which sounds you like the best. For example, an MG42 sound in one mod may not strike me as one in another so I just swap it out for the other one.
  3. Oops I did indeed read that wrong, I thought he meant he wanted to live there! Nonetheless I am surprised he enjoyed his time there seeing as what I have learned of the DDR. I suppose this article is a great example of the individual and how easy it is to just lump everyone into one group, and in doing so getting a lot of things wrong.
  4. That is a very interesting interview, I have read his book once, but I can't believe how much hatred he has for the west and not the Russians! I would think for the majority of German soldiers the Russians were indeed there most hated enemy, many ran off to surrender to Americans etc. His experiences are most certainly more unique than the majority of the men who fought in the east. I also wonder now how many even wanted to live in the DDR its crazy how he did!
  5. Steam workshop is allowed/enabled by the developer, I have games on Steam that I have mods for that do not require steam workshop. Modders shouldn't have to do anything in regards to that, if anything workshop functionality would just make it easier to organize/distribute mods. As for the "flak" BF is receiving from this guy if it makes BF "even more resistant" than they have more problems than a few people over the course of two years coming on and suggesting Steam. I think we all need to remember that we all want what is best for this game, yes even the guy proposing arguments for Steam (Which I largely agree with). The hostility comes from two very different ideas of what Steam is going to mean for BF.
  6. In many of the NATO and some US missions it advises you to not fire on buildings until you have identified enemies in them in case of civilian casualties. My problem is, how do I identify enemy's in these buildings if I can't fire on them, sending scouts in close would be suicide because of the ambush risk and most enemy units are hiding so you can't spot them normally in the building. Tips, tricks, thoughts? Thanks.
  7. Our hearts are in the right place (I was the one who made the last Steam thread), but if BF doesn't think its a good idea than it isn't. As Steve always says, they have lasted this long doing what they wanted and so far it has definitely worked. I would love for Combat Mission to get more popular as well, but Steam doesn't appear to be the avenue to do it.
  8. Anyone who thinks a machinegun team stacking up with 4 or 5 people in a window is a sign of "complete lack of tactics or intelligence on the part of the men you pretend you are individually modeling" is overreacting and frankly needs to get over the fact that that window has bad LOS and is abstracted. Its fine complaining about bad LOS, I have done it and many others, but going on to throw what I see as a tantrum over the AI and the rest of the game over it is just silly.
  9. I have played the majority of scenarios in Red Thunder and a wide selection of the QB's with a friend and I can say I haven't had a problem as severe as yours. I think you may be exacerbating this a little, it would really help if you would post screenshots. There is no doubt that LOS can be very fickle but usually there is a very good reason for LOS to be blocked, what is the time of day, do you have trees turned on? I have made stupid mistakes like that before.
  10. At this point I think you need to provide screenshots, its hard to visualize what you are talking about.
  11. Good stuff Erwin, I agree with all of it, especially selecting movement lines and color coded squads!
  12. Ukranian Army 300mm Smerch Rocket artillery firing- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6nttvUpWhg Those rockets are huge, I would hate to be on the other end of these things!
  13. I love seeing Combat Mission get good press, hopefully that video and article inspire more people to play!
  14. No surprises there, I was talking with my friend and we think Brad Pitt will pop out his 45 and kill it.
  15. I understand that armored reconnaissance works much differently in reality, but in terms of this tactical space what is the best way to utilize it? Obviously infantry would be a better way but in the case of some scenarios where you have only armored recce and no infantry (At least in the beginning) what is the best way to employ it? Thanks.
  16. Valiant Hearts: The Great War was recently released, its no combat sim but instead a puzzle game set during the war. Its the story of five individuals who find themselves wrapped up in the war from many different walks of life, from a Belgian nurse to a German and French soldier. The story is based on recovered letters from such individuals during World War 1. The graphical style is extremely stylistic and instead of focusing on combat it attempts to show all of the facets of the war. You find yourself escaping a POW camp, to fighting under the trenches in tunnel warfare, and of course taking trenches. Collectables provide extra information on rather trivial items such as a soldiers flask or an ink well, that provide a lot of fascinating facts. I watched a play through of the game and it actually brought a tear to my eye at the end, it was very powerful even though it doesn't look it at a glance. I am glad the game exists because it is a chance for a younger generation to get into history and understand/remember the sacrifices of those so long ago. The message at the end of the game is as valid as it was back then. "War makes men mad" Here is the trailer for those interested, and this is by no means a competitor to CM
  17. Indeed that is very annoying, but there is a very easy fix! Don't let the AI pick its forces, do it yourself, you can still get a randomized result from the ai just go in and delete the artillery.
  18. Since radios were so rare at the platoon and company level in German formations shouldn't we see a patch fixing this? Or is it just an abstraction to help with calls for fire? (Simulating runners and such)
  19. Remember when infantry are using "grenades" on vehicles in a close assault it is an abstraction. They could be doing anything from throwing grenade bundles to climbing on the damn thing! A side note to that is that some units in Red Thunder specifically Russian "tank hunter" teams actually have AT grenades and are visible in their inventory, these are also shown being thrown rather than a generic grenade.
  20. That is supposed to happen, it is an abstraction. However friendlies can wound/kill each other with explosive weapons ala a tank cannon, artillery or rifle grenade.
  21. Very powerful at the end there Jorge great job. What sound mods are you using?
  22. Ah well I guess that's that than really. Its a shame they can't find a beneficial way to put it on there.
  23. Today Close Combat launched on Steam in one of the few rare times an in-depth tactical/strategic game made it onto such a widely used digital service. I honestly think that Combat Mission deserves a place there too, I know many of you guys say that having all these new guys flood the forums and not understand the game would damage what we have here. However, I think Steam is an amazing opportunity to get Combat Mission out too people who might not realize they would love a game like it and those who may just be curious. I think that maybe something as simple as a demo being released on Steam (For Red Thunder most likely) would do wonders for not only just sales, but the community as a whole and growing it. This would attract idiots and those who would bash the game, but I say that is worth it. I have said this before and I got mixed results, but I feel like it is definitely a discussion worth having every now and than.
  24. A "Cross of Iron" scenario...awesome, I think I love you. You can probably tell I am a fan, I will report back on what I think soon.
  25. This happens to me from time to time, and an easy way to fix it is to just simply "face" command your men in a different direction. This is obviously easier to do in set-up since they don't take there time repositioning. I am not exactly sure why this happens but I would imagine the tac AI thinks that the foxhole is less safe than wherever it places them in correspondence to which direction they are facing. This is particularly true I have noticed if you have foxholes placed right next to buildings, they like to "stack" up on the side of them in certain situations rather than use the fox hole.
