Well the first thing to remember when looking at UKR forces is that there are layers here.  Unlike the Russian forces who, for the most part, try to control where they are with LOCs back to Belarus or Russia, these are horizontal forces and relationships.
The Ukrainians have vertical forces and relationships in addition to horizontal ones.  So take any map of the conflict:

This one from wikipedia - So the interplay of red and yellow with tac signs is horizontal.  And from this it does look like the Russians are trying to do some operational pinching which would normally point to some trouble for the UA.  The reality is though that the map is really three dimensional.  Vertically there is a foundation of local and regional support and combat power in the form of an ever growing resistance (I hear a lot of western experts say "insurgency", I think I even used the term early once and this is inaccurate, a resistance is really something else from a lot of directions).  Further, for every day that the Russians bog down, that vertical resistance gets better armed, better organized and better prepared.
So what?  Well from a Russian viewpoint that vertical layer underneath means two very bad things: support and friction.  Ukrainian force will be able to draw support from that layer in the form of manpower and logistics.  This means the Russians are now force to make those "pinches" air tight, which is extremely labour intensive.  For example, locals can push fuel and ammo into a pocket, through all the backroads and farmers fields, which they know very well, and continue to supply fighting power to seemingly cut off troops.  The level of control required for that is extreme, as the US learned in Vietnam.
Second is friction.  Having even low tech resistance everywhere is exhausting in terms of constant attrition and morale.  Every move you make is watched and reported on, every road move is like the freakin Memphis Bell mission over Germany - someone is going to get killed and we are all hoping it isn't us.  Logistical lines need to be iron-cladded.  And this will inevitably lead to over use of force on civilians which does nothing for the information war.
So in this sense it is really hard to judge where the Ukrainians stand by using the pins on the mapboard.  They have already gone hybrid.  For example, how many major tank battles have we heard about?  There have no doubt been clashes but the Ukrainians are already fighting like Comanches with drones right now offensively and it is working for them.  Defensively, again layers, they can dig in and be very difficult to dig out, and even if you do, you still have a deeper resistance to deal with in the civilian population.
My assessment matches what we have been seeing all over mainstream.  The Russians have stalled...bad.  This was not a consolidation or re-org or clever trap, it was a significant stalling an a systemic level going all the way back through those LOCs.  The Ukrainians have created so much friction on the Russian advance that the war machine looks like it broke.  They are now staging local c-attacks and very visible attrition actions from what I can see.
The question the remains is "can the Russians re-org/re-boot and somehow regain the operational offensive?" This, particularly around Kyiv.  Or are we going to see what I call "zombie muscle twitches" as formation commanders try and look busy to get the heat off them that is coming from Moscow?  These can even seem dramatic but they do not translate into any real operational gains.  Don't know, a lot of opinions out there for either side.
    Few things I do notice:
    - Russians are not even talking about Western Ukraine anymore.  If the aim was to take the whole perogy, Kyiv is more symbolic.  In order to do that "entire Ukraine" thing, one has to cut off support from the West.   Which really means that all this prom-night groping in the East - so sweaty but not really going nowhere - is missing the point entirely once we accept that Ukrainians will very likely keep on fighting both conventionally and unconventionally even after Kyiv falls.    Why there was not a very sharp attack from Western Belarus at what it the real strategic Center of Gravity in all this, Lviv, to seal up the western end of Ukraine, including the Carpathians, was the first sign that the Russians did not think this through.
    - Operationally, the Russians have still not established pre-conditions and we are over two weeks in.  Air, info, electronic, cognitive/decision and logistical superiority have all been a hard fail.  For example, Russian Air Forces should be hitting logistical resupply from the west 24/7 - an air campaign for the history books- and they are largely tepid and absent.  They need to work on that or this grind is going to be much longer, to the point they very may well not be able to sustain.
    - Operationally, the Ukrainians are not showing signs of buckling in all those pre-conditions areas. There is no doubt erosion but they still can find, fix and finish Russians and even do local offensive actions. All the while they coordinate and communicate effectively and are still able to push support in from the West as they get better and better prepared.
So in summary, keep an eye on that vertical Ukrainian dimension because it is decisive and something needs to demonstrate the Russians are even able to set what should have been initial conditions and I may start to buy in on the "Russian Grind" strategy.  Until then we are at Balkan-No-Step, everyone digs in and tries to influence the negotiation table, or Death March to Moscow as the Russian military simply quits.  I mean the Russians do have the numbers for the Russian Grind but that is on paper and looking at the horizontal dimension only.  This is unfolding like a European version of that anecdote from Afghanistan, "Russians have all the fancy watches but the Ukrainians have all the time".

    John Kettler,
I personally appreciate your contribution to CM over the years - you have searched out things that are historical, factual, and often extremely interesting. Some things on this particular thread are possibly propaganda, maybe to some degree on both sides. I don't mind that - I like to know what propaganda is out there. It's OK to hear this stuff direct, then you can make up your own mind.
Another very common type of post in CM forums is the opinion post - some of it quite well-informed, a bit more of it being 'armchair general' kind of stuff. I find opinion posts less interesting, but a lot of people like them.
Anyway, I'm glad you post the things you find - I have no time to search out any of this stuff myself. I don't like it that others are rude to you - my rather long list of people I've blocked on this forum is made up of rude people, something I can't abide.
Anyway - keep posting. I've always appreciated your diverse posts on CM and I continue to appreciate them

    MikeyD et al.,

At least in some competitive group format, the Nabla System, the brainchild of our own Jarmo Hurri (Nabla) and Mike Meinecke back in the CMx1 days, was specifically built for imbalanced and even sure loss scenarios, because the metric wasn't how you did in absolute terms, but in how you did relative to everyone else playing your side in that particular scenario. Instead of obsessing over how unfair the scenario was, the player on the feces covered end of the stick instead focused on not just combat performance but force preservation and especially evacuating unhorsed AFV crews and prisoners, since both counted double points in assessing your individual performance. No longer was it a fight to the last tank and last grunt. See no reason why what worked great in CMx1 wouldn't do just as well in CMx2

    Steve,

Was current when I left the house and am now pages behind after being barely back home. Have checked all my CW posts and found I can delete none, so if they're an issue with you and since it's your board, am afraid you or one of the Mods will have to remove them. Got dinged by one of the Forumites about not providing any sources in one of the earlier ones, so went to heavy documentation later. Sorry so many people consider this topic Russian disinformation. In any event, I shan't be posting further on this, per your and BFCElvis's requests. Would really hate to be sent on vacation with things again heating up!

Thought I'd supply some recent links on the latest developments ref biolabs in Ukraine, concerning which both China and Russia have made official statements. China says the US has 26 biolabs in Ukraine. The Russians have published a claimed emergency order from February 22 (the day the invasion began) from the Ukrainian Ministry of Health ordering destruction of pathogens, etc. Please note well the complete absence of infowars and the letter used to denote an interrogative from what I provided. Also, sent Steve none of these. The first one is from yesterday, March 9.

    From a Pakistan defense blog

The first item is from middleeastmonitor.com.

    https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/china-calls-on-washington-to-unveil-bio-labs-in-ukraine-china-demands-answers-from-us-for-26-biolabs-in-ukraine.737235/

The meat of the article reads:

China's statement came a day after the defence ministry in Moscow accused the US of running 30 biological labs in Ukraine, producing viruses that cause serious diseases. The head of Russia's radiation, chemical and biological protection force, Igor Kirillov, noted that Russian troops have destroyed some of them, reported Anadolu Agency.

"Military biological programmes are being implemented by the Pentagon in post-Soviet countries, including in Ukraine," explained Kirillov. "A network of more than 30 biological laboratories has been created, which can be divided into research and sanitary-epidemiological sites in the cities of Lviv, Kharkiv, and Poltava."

The Russian official added that there were traces of pathogens of the plague, anthrax, brucellosis, diphtheria, salmonellosis and dysentery. Neither Kyiv nor Washington commented on this.

Kirillov noted that in Lviv alone, 232 containers were destroyed containing the causative agent of leptospirosis, 30 with tularaemia, 10 with brucellosis and five with plague.

In the same context, Moscow claimed that Washington spent more than $200 million on the work of the biological labs in Ukraine. Furthermore, it alleged that the labs of the Central Directorate of Health and Epidemiology of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence participated in the US military biological programme.

The second is from Pakistan's The Express Tribune and is also quite pithy.

    https://tribune.com.pk/story/2347167/china-demands-answers-from-us-for-26-biolabs-in-ukraine

China asked Washington on Tuesday to release “relevant details as soon as possible” regarding alleged US biological laboratories in Ukraine.

“According to the data released by the US itself, the US has 26 biological laboratories and other related facilities in Ukraine which has indeed attracted great attention,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a news conference in Beijing.

A similar claim was made Sunday by Russian Defence Ministry that there was “evidence of a US-financed military biological programme developed in Ukraine.”

Moscow said the lab was “revealed during Russia’s special operation in that country.”

“All dangerous viruses in Ukraine must be stored in these laboratories. All research activities are led by the US. No information is allowed to be disclosed without the permission of the US side,” claimed Zhao, according to a transcription of the news conference.

He claimed the Pentagon “has absolute control” over these alleged labs.

Here is ample evidence the biolabs exist and that Russia has been sounding the alarm over them from a BW standpoint going clear back to 2015.

    https://www.networkradio.us/post/the-united-biolabs-of-ukraine

And here we have reports of official US statement from the US Embassy in Kviv the labs exist, the letter from no fewer than four members of the Rada officially notifying Zelensky and two other Ukrainian government officials of their concerns about the labs, which they explicitly state are DOD controlled and that the Ukrainian Ministry of Health was working with them. Of particular note are their statements regarding hundreds of deaths (450) in one incident alone and total deaths of nearly 1000. They express concern as to BW and that the Ukrainian people may be the targets of the work. There are maps produced by Bulgarian journalists showing the locations of the labs, all sorts of material on the work being done, funding ($2.1 BILLION for DOD (from DTRA) funded biolabs worldwide), a statement from the US Embassy the Pentagon was supervising the labs, and all sorts of agreements and arrangements produced as well. Digital images of some of the purported documents (in Ukrainian) are included.

    https://seemorerocks.is/the-secret-us-biolabs-in-ukraine/

Shall close with a very long, excruciatingly detailed and well documented look at the ongoing, clandestine and protected by diplomatic cover and corporate insulation from surveillance and oversight US BW program. As a longtime student of BW and CW, as well as someone who had to become directly involved in both as a Soviet Threat Analyst when working on aircrew and aircraft NBC protection for the Rockwell's Advanced Tactical Fighter, I found even spot reading harrowing.
Among other things, it shows that a US lab in Georgia was doing real work (2014) with virus-infected biting flies (from the Philippines!), and that these same non-indigenous to the area biting flies then appeared in Dagestan, Russia, ((2014) shortly after they appeared out of nowhere in Tbilisi, Georgia (2014) and became a real problem. There was NO biting fly problem in Tbilisi BEFORE the insect facility was established at the biolab there. In both locations everyone bitten by them developed mysterious rashes. The US Army ran a multi-year program in which it did testing of insect-transmitted viruses on soldiers using various insect species to bite the test subjects. The declassified Army documents proving this insect-delivered testing was done are now available. Would note that the use of insects as BW vectors is well established, such as the infected flea bombs the Japanese created in the notorious Unit 731 and dropped on the Chinese.

    https://goldenageofgaia.com/2020/04/20/pentagon-biological-weapons-program-never-ended/

Shall be most interested to see the responses to the above, and I ask my critics especially to read the articles and think about them, and do their own checking, rather than abreacting and going off on me (not to mention using the threat of a vacation to silence me)  simply because they disagree with me, the subject or don't want to believe it could be real.

The new materials I found provide an excellent basis for understanding why the Russians have been long (since 2015) and loudly sounding the alarm ref the DOD-funded biolabs in Ukraine.

    Regards,

    John Kettler

    sburke,

I deliberately didn't post links, because I wanted you to go first read the realities of Snopes and do your own research so you couldn't say I rigged the results. I did offer to post the links I sent Steve, but only if he was cool with it. All I did in my post was to provide a quick summary of what I personally had found. At no time did I refer to either of the two sites named by you. While we're at it, another thing my own research turned up was DARPA work on genomic mapping of ethnic groups.    This has patently obvious BW application.

Whether Steve agrees to my posting the links here or not, I make this offer: will send those who PM me a request the same links I sent Steve. Just include your email, so I can do this privately.

Wish to further discuss deconfliction. There's more to deconfliction than merely not shooting down friendlies with AD resources. For example, it's necessary to deconflict support fires from tube artillery, mortars and rockets from all friendly aircraft, whether fixed wing or rotary. It's necessary to deconflict fighters from SAMs, too, or AA as appropriate. This is important not just because of potential amicide, but because of combat effectiveness optimization and avoiding the multiple costs of overtargeting or, worse, targets not engaged because of target assignment confusion. Have worked some of these problems myself professionally, and they can become real head busters quickly, because it's not as simple as simply drawing a zone on the ma. Effective deconfliction is multidimensional in time, space and altitude.

You don't want your airstrike coming in when friendly artillery is firing. Before and after? Wonderful, but not during! You need your FAC or drone not to be in the flight path of inbound shells. And not in the flight path might simply be flying well above the max ordinate of the shells being fired. But even this doesn't properly describe the complexity of deconfliction, because  effective deconfliction is crucially dependent on great real-time comms, clearly defined orders and a keen understanding of who's where doing what. And if you think this is bad now, wait and see what happens when you have long range SAMs and AAMs in the mix and also working across national boundaries, language issues, procedural differences, IFF system differences, terminology confusion, equipment compatibility issues (or even no connectivity in some cases), reliability, enemy action and more. Despite everything I've listed, I guarantee I missed a bunch of topics.

Finally was able to catch up in this thread.
First and foremost I would like to wish every forum member affected by the war all the strength, courage and hope in this awful time! Especially to our Ukranian friends! Slava Ukraine!
Thanks everyone for contributing. It has been a total surreal experience to be able to see news popping up in this thread often well before mainstream media picked up on it.
Also thanks to this great community to keep sharing the extensive knowledge that’s been on display here while also keeping the discussion on topic, free from slander, attacks on each other and trolling (at least it never escalated). It goes to show how excellent and mature this community is.
I have little military knowledge to inject into the conversation, but I wanted to add the above to show my respect.
Let’s hope the war will end sooner rather than later and we can all go back to playing games instead.

Ref V special ops force, imagery I've seen reveals there were other pieces of it not present in that strip of town or village hwhere the local cursed the Russians throughout his video/s. Specifically, military journalist lia Ponomarenko posted a BMD-2 with dead Russians (faces not visible and no gore) sprawled atop it on the hull top near the turret and aft of that. This one was labeled sensitive and blurred out by Twitter, but you can see it by choosing to override the blurring. Here is a tank originally part of V that certainly doesn't seem to be in a village or town. All imagery is directly from Igor Girkin's Twitter.

Here is a second V marked tank.

Another V stray. Flubbed IDs corrected by Haiduk info Upper photo is BTR-MDM, lower photo FO vehicle 1V119 Reostat

Were these originally to hold snatched key Ukrainians, their corpses or both for return to Russia. We know what they're ostensibly doing, but can we trust that?

    FogForever,

Can't speak to optimum engagement range in CMCW, but there is real world info available. During the Vietnam War, there was a good size clash between NVA T-54/T-55 and PT-76s vs ARVN M48A3 and M41A3s. Don't recall the battle name, but the gist of it is that the US trained ARVN tankers not only shot the daylights out of the attackers, but did it from "impossible" engagement ranges, leading to frantic NVA radio cries by the tankers they were in a minefield.  The Soviet doctrinal range for a T-54/55 was 1000 meters, and the ARVN tankers were, I believe, shooting at ranges of 2000-2500 meters, maybe more, and killing at will. From what I can recall, the M41s killed not only the oh so poorly armored PT-76s but also the well protected T-54/55 tanks, using HVAP to great effect on the latter. Late in the Vietnam War, The NVA made first combat use of the AT-3/SAGGER and killed many tanks with it in a number of battles. The articles below don't get into as much detail but nevertheless will be helpful. Have written on these matters before here on the Forum and posted links over and above these.

Word to the wise as I've already seen comments recommending. No matter where you are, especially in a NATO country if you've not done any prepping for a cyber attack that takes down power grids you need to get to it. If youv'e not already exercised your 2nd amendment right I suggest that too. All these world leaders are controlled by bankers, and mega corporations. If you do not know who Klaus Schwab, head of The World Economic Forum, the Bilderberg Group, and Davos Group, is then it is in your interest to investigate who he is. In his arrogance he openly brags of infiltrating half of the cabinets of the world, including Canada's to name just one. You may not know of his connection to the pandemic in his book "Covid 19, and The Great Reset",and his round table war gaming of the pandemic 5 MONTHS before hand in Oct. 2019 along with The Gates Foundation which they called "Event 201". You can investigate these things for yourself
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaus_Schwab - Capture of democratic structures and institutions
He is now openly bragging of the possibility of a cyber attack on the power grid as a next phase of their "Great Reset". This war is convenient in the wanting to facilitate that desire. I normally do not get into these things on the forum, but I think this is important enough to post to inform especially if you have never heard of Klaus Schwab, The World Economic Forum, and the term "The Great Reset". Oh, and you may want to learn of his relationship with Putin. Prep and you will be wise. Seek and you shall find ....

3 hours ago Euromaidan Press posted a video of Tigrs and Russian tracks rushing through Kharkiv. They sport the boxed Z. Video wouldn't copy.

    All,

Remember what I said about RADHAZ? No tac nukes needed for this one! About 01:20 EET, Russian shells hit the radioactive waste storage facility of the Kyiv branch of the Radon Association, according to Ukraine's State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine.   8:02 PM · Feb 26, 2022·Twitter Web App   7h   Replying to @EuromaidanPress The Agency says the enterprise's personnel reported it by phone from the shelter amid the ongoing shelling and having no possibility to assess the scale of destruction and the radiation levels.   Euromaidan Press   @EuromaidanPress · 7h   The automated radiation monitoring system failed, but surveillance cameras recorded the shell impacts. Preliminarily, there's no threat outside the sanitary protection zone. The radiation situation will be assessed after the shelling is over.             Cisco Bhoy   @CiscoBhoy · 7h   Replying to @EuromaidanPress Verified that this facility does exist. They treat a wide range of hazardous waste. Need more info to know the potential risk but the intent is clear. This is global terrorism. https://youcontrol.com.ua/en/catalog/company_details/43068161/   Rep     On a separate RADHAZ note, apparently vehicle movements through the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone threw up lots of radioactive dust, too.

    Regards,
