As I recall, I believe Guderian when he was inspector-general tried to push the idea of just producing assault guns like Stug's, they were easy to build, could be mass produced and the main gun was almost as powerful as on a Panther.
Panthers and Tigers look cool, but required more man hours to build for not that much impact.  As I recall, most of the Big Cats were lost not through combat, but were abandoned when they broke down or ran out of gas.

It's a winter scenario so it looks kind of bleak. It's a 4k by 4k map and while all of it won't be in this scenario it leaves room for additional battles as tank battles were occurring all over the place at this time.
It's going to be the tank battle of Lisow based on the book "Tank Battles in East Prussia and Poland 1944-1945: Vilkavishkis, Gumbinnen/Nemmersdorf, Elbing, Wormditt/Frauenburg, Kielce/Lisow by Igor Nebolsin."
The map took about 6 weeks to do as it took a little while to figure out what I was doing, not hard once you figured out what to do. Worked on it every day up to 8 hours some days (made for some interesting dreams at night...😀).
Now if I can get the pixel tanks and pixeltruppen to do what I want it should be a good game.

I haven't watched the video but it does sound like it makes overly broad generalizations.

Another key ingredient in the rejuvenation of the Soviet tank fleet was the improvement in quality control. Through 1943 output quantity had remained the emphasis; quality control was weak, as mentioned in the previous chapter. The Nizhni-Tagil design bureau had been pressing the GABTU to allow them to impose greater uniformity on the several plants manufacturing the T-34/85 and to put more emphasis on quality control at the subcontracting plants. This began to pay off in 1944. The policy of testing new T-34 tanks on a test track in 1943 found that only a small fraction could run the minimum requirement of 300 kilometers before breaking down. By early 1944 this dismal record had been overcome and T-34 reliability finally reached acceptable levels. During February 1944 tests 79 percent of tanks reached 300 kilometers, and of the test batches 33 percent reached 1,000 kilometers. This became immediately apparent to the tank troops. The deputy commander of the 1st Guards Tank Army, P. G. Dyner, commented that tanks in 1943 would reach only 75 percent of their guaranteed life span in engine hours and mileage, but in 1944 they reached 150 percent.

One point to keep in mind is that the western view of Russian tactics has been heavily influenced by German accounts of WW2, notably the notion of “human wave” attacks and that the Russians only won because of overwhelming numbers which makes you think that the Russians just used WW1 tactics. This is wrong IMHO.
As far as I can tell, the Russians used the same infantry tactics in 43-45 on attack as the Germans and Western Allies used, i.e., fire and movement, use of cover, short sprints, etc. The major difference is that the Russians were less concerned about casualties, so they would tend to press an attack when a U.S. commander would be more likely to stop and call in artillery.

To your larger point, as I cant comment on the effectiveness of arty, the problem with the CMCW simulation is that its limited by numbers, which forces battles which can only be *so* big. Id argue that NATO also suffers from this issue in its own offensive situations. In real life, as best as I understand Soviet doctrine it would have been not to fight first and foremost, if the spear can flow  around an enemy position then it ought to do so. But if it had to fight that it was up to HHQ, either at the regimental or divisional level most likely, to concentrate maximum force onto a single axis. Probably this would mean picking one battle and dumping the entire divisions artillery pool on it, plus helo and air support. This concentration of arty assets would be possible in engine, certainly it would give you the effect youre looking for, but I think it would drive most players insane. Moreover, the idea of the balanced battalion on battalion boxing match is IMO probably not as it would have actually gone in many situations. If the forward detachment and combat patrols located a serious NATO obstacle, division HQ would make a determination as to the best case of action. If it was decided to attack, several battalions from the regiment would be moved into position to overwhelm the position, and depending on the situation perhaps several regiments from the division would also engage in the attack. The goal being to make the fight unfair, to hit the enemy with as much as the can from as many directions as possible to fold up resistance quickly and get back to moving. CMCW doesnt simulate any of this because it doesn't do the operational side of the conflict and anyway I doubt many players would like the lopsided engagements that commanders would try to produce on the battlefield.
As I understand it NATO doctrine is mostly the same re: concentration and dispersal. FM71-2 in one of its scenarios recommends that the commander concentrate several companies of his battalion to systematically destroy each enemy platoon. Operationally the same thing would apply at the higher levels. Several battalions ideally would want to hit a single one, several brigades a sole regiment.
Ultimately CM is a game, not real life. Its a cool game. But it cant capture many of the factors actual Cold Warriors would likely have faced.

I would be pretty suspect of the timeline laid out here, it doesn't really correspond to the timelines laid out by either David Glantz in his books on Soviet operational theory or in FM 100-2-1.
The four major periods of Soviet doctrinal change were 1945-1954(ish), 1954(/5/6)-late 1960s, 1970-mid1980s, and the late 80s quest for the holy doctrine, which we know never actually finished. To the astute reader, youll notice that those first two periods roughly correspond to whose in charge of the USSR at the time, and thats no accident. After victory in WWII Stalin felt that the Red Army needed no major changes, and the biggest change during the last years of Stalin's life was in the organization of the Tank Armies. After all, if THE BOSS said it was good, it was good. When he died, Khrushchev came to power with the backing of the army along with promises that they would have a freer hand in settling their internal, doctrinal, affairs. At this point you see a shift similar to what happened in the US army during the Pentatomic days. More focus on nukes, fighting dispersed without any front line, and creating formations that can do it all alone. Its my own personal opinion that had war come in the late 50s through to the end of the US involvement in Vietnam it would have gone nuclear almost immediately thanks to one side or another. But as early as the late-1960s the Russians realized that nuclear parody with the US would mean a sort of 'neutralization' of the nuclear option. Truly it would be for both, real, honest to god Mutually Assured Destruction. That meant that conventional war might be back on the menu. Moreover, in the era of the war for national liberation (that is the 60s) you cant sell Atomic warfare to places like Vietnam, Egypt, and Syria. You can sell conventional weapons backed by conventional doctrine. It may seem like an overblown concern but in the latter Brezhnev years prestige and influence in the third world became major pillars of Soviet foreign policy. This emphasis on winning the conventional battle evolved through the 1970s into the classic 'smash and grab' Operational Maneuver Group style of warfare, which was really just a return to WWII operations like @TheCaptainrightly pointed out. Importantly my reading of Soviet advisory efforts in the 3rd world, especially Egypt, suggests that the Soviets were seriously considering plans short of 'world domination.' Imagine how the 1973 October Crisis would have evolved if during negotiations the Red Army grabbed Hamburg then stopped. Having an army capable of the bite-and-hold would give the USSR its own hostage with which to leverage the west in a crisis. Again, in my own opinion had the war started in the 1970s the US probably would have lost in the short term and resorted to nukes in an all out situation. Part of that is doctrine, though Active Defense gets a bad rap IMO, and part of that was manpower which post-Vietnam was horrid. But within the timeframe of CMCW I think you see the US take its turn. In 1979 the USSR has major advantages. In 1982 the US does. And by 1985 IMO those advantages become overwhelming. AirLand battle and the PGM battle was a true seachange which totally demolished the Soviet way of warfare. By the latter 1980s the Soviets cant even really deny how far behind theyve fallen or how badly outclassed their tech is. Not only is it not as good as western tech, but the US has had several weapons generations to stockpile PGMs while the Soviets are basically starting from scratch. Its a fatal blow to the Red Army which it, and later the Russian Federation's army, only really began to recover from in the 2000s. And back to the nuclear question, after the 1960s return to the WWII style of mechanized shock and maneuver, there were plans to go with nukes and plans to go without it. The further into the late-Cold War we get the more likely the war would have started in a non-nuclear way. IMO with nuclear parity it would be pretty foolish for either side to have done a first strike. The moment of crisis for the Red Army would have come if and when its plan ran up against its first operational roadblock. FM100-2-1 suggests that all weapons were on the table if it meant keeping momentum. But as I read it it probably would have also been up to GSFG&above to make that final call.
I think ironically, up to a certain point the more dominant NATO became tactically the more it increased the risk of nuclear war. I think in 1982-1985 the risk of a conventional WWIII going nuclear was at its highest since the 1950s. That really only changes as the Soviet system begins to falter, nobody is risking global thermonuclear annihilation in 1989 to save the decrepit USSR.

Definitely you'll find a most diverse mix of tactical situations! I think there's something different to all 35 scenarios, so hopefully not too repetitive.
It is a walkthrough historic reenactment, an attempt to get a low level understanding for what happened when, as opposed to pure gameplay.
It can be difficult to achieve both. There are different player skill levels to consider too. There's no way you can please everyone across all scenarios at this scale.
Some later scenarios are difficult to get a draw or better, so in the initial list I included the minimum level to progress, some of which are Major/Total defeats. There are some massive engagements, which may not be to your taste, such as KG X at Malmedy, Butchers of Baugnez and Ster Way to Heaven.
All I can say is you generally have plenty of time, 2 1/2 hours for the larger scenarios, so you shouldn't be up against it time-wise, which allows full recon, prep fire, smoke, changing initial approach to plan B, hiding units in cover that you don't necessarily need etc.
In addition to the situations you mention, some interesting ones
This one is caveated...as its not "fun" but Minen the Gap is included because... the Scheid Bridge, blown up by the Germans in their September retreat, caused initial delays for the KG, alongside them trying to use the same road as a 12th Volksgrenadier Division. The Spitze lost Bersin's and Bahrendt's Panthers in the area, as well as a little later Sternebeck's Panzer IV. So historically significant events to warrant including the scenario. Plus the map may be worth reusing at some point and was fun to build. It would be a nice CM feature if you were allowed to use the AI to control some troops on your own side, as would a follow command. But not to be as yet. Captured equipment from both sides make appearances Exit / sneak lead core units through enemy held village Capture fuel dump intact Armoured pursuit versus rear echelon Recon Pumas attack versus ??? Tactical withdrawal, including rescuing a King Tiger, the idea "borrowed" from a CMBN campaign, adds some tension to a fighting withdrawal. https://www.thefewgoodmen.com/tsd3/cm-final-blitzkrieg/cmfb-closing-the-door/ Meeting engagement where both sides are attempting a tactical withdrawal through each others positions Major McCown makes appearance(s) Air attack, versus exit asap AA and Gndr defending, love those AA units Watching on map 150mm IG shells travelling across the battlefield...and the results, one of the benefits of keeping the maps huge. Gndr and nebelwerfer (they do make an appearance!) versus ...you'll find out, hopefully!

    little bit of both really.
Rest and resupply is detailed in the later briefings, but pretty limited. Generally some resupply overnight Day3, 4 and 5.
To help out, the Fallshirmjager do get mortar ammo replenished and some resupply at Bullingen when you capture the fuel dump, SN06.

    Hi folks....
Just an update that a new campaign from @theforgeris now available on The Scenario Depot.
CMFB Rollbahn D -Full Campaign (thefewgoodmen.com)
The Rollbahn D Campaign contains 35 linear scenarios built as historically accurate as possible.
In other news thanks to the folk who have been emailing me regarding the missing links they have come across in The Scenario Depot.  I do believe that I have worked through the 700 odd scenarios and all links are now added... it was a beast of a job but I finally got there.  It doesn't help when sometimes the file names don't reflect the title of the scenario... but it is good that these scenarios didnt just disappear when the BF Repository shut down or GreenAsJade stopped maintaining CMMODs.
Ive also been advised by a few folk about the comments regarding me and my handling of the Mods and Scenarios so just a quick post to clarify my position with a few points.
Battlefront decided to discontinue the BF Repository...
GreenAsJade offered to host the mods/scenarios on CMMOD's...
GaJ, myself and a team of volunteers transferred thousands of files across from the Repository before it was closed...
GaJ stopped maintaining CMMOD's and I did my best to carry on the work we started but without direct ownership I did what I could...
My site The Few Good Men in agreement with Gary Krockover took over the names of The Scenario Depot and The Proving Grounds (from CMx1 fame) and we started hosting our own work under those names and added in The Mod Warehouse, it was not my intention at that time to become the guardian of all CM Mods and Scenarios.
As CMMOD's became less and less active I came to an agreement with BF that the FGM would host the files using the CM Mod Warehouse and The Scenario Depot so that we didn't lose all that historical content.  That is part of the reason why the upload process is a little stilted - it wasn't designed for thousands of users to march in and start uploading mods.  It was set up for me to rescue any mods from disappearing.
Now I hold my hands up and admit that I have been overwhelmed with the amount of content that I got, I was passed, salvaged, downloaded, was emailed tens of thousands of files and that yes I only have a certain amount of them up on the site and hosted as it is a continual work in progress and that is where we stand just now.
Between having a family, full time job and other commitments I do what I can and would appreciate some understanding of the situation before commenting that 'I have destroyed the community or calling for me to be assassinated'.  A lot of people have been giving their opinion without offering a solution.  This is the best solution I was able to come up with to save the content at the time.
The majority of costs are paid for by me helped out with some donations to ease the burden.
I have said before if someone wished to take on the financial burden, has the time to invest in uploading thousands of files and the means to continually maintain the huge database and answer numerous queries on a daily basis then I am willing to hand over the reins.  But, I suspect like the last time no one actually wants to do that and would rather hide behind a keyboard firing insults at me so we are left in the position that I will carry on doing what I am doing with the full support of the guys at BF.  I will close with this...
all files are backed up to a hard drive on a regular basis. I have a huge catalogue of files and am happy if you are looking for a particular mod/scenario, to check to see if I have it, if it is not hosted on the site yet and get it fired of to you.  If I fail to get back to you via PM or the like hit me up again.  I receive a tonne of correspondence every day and sometimes these do get lost in the maelstrom. Thanks for reading and hopefully this clarifies things a little... and if you want to take over the job feel free to drop me a PM and we can discuss.
    Cheers for reading....

    From the man himself...
December 16th 05:35, the “Ghost Front” erupts in a maelstrom of noise and violence as Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein begins.
The Rollbahn D Campaign contains 35 linear scenarios built as historically accurate as I’ve been able to achieve.
You control the fortunes of KG Peiper, SG Knittel, and Panzer Brigade 150, along with elements from KG Hansen, KG Sandig, and the 3. Fallschirmjäger-Division.
    Boy did this project snowball!
The Campaign begins with a choice. Either starting at the very beginning or on Day 3 of the offensive. The latter will be an easier route as you’ll have not suffered any losses to your core units. I’ve included here what it takes to progress within the Campaign as not every engagement is balanced. The scenarios range from small to medium to Ben Hur like epics.
I’ve made minor changes to the Day 1-2 scenarios based on the feedback from the Rollbahn D Part 1 Campaign.

All the maps are my own, apart from Cheneux, which is stock that I’ve modified. Ranks/uniforms can be inaccurate as command units are above the battalion level.
Each Scenario will be available as a separate download in January.

So here are the draft orders ...
    Situation
Amid a background of tensions on the Russian and Belarusian borders with the Baltic states, Russia announced its Zapad exercise, which traditionally takes place in September, early causing alarm to NATO governments.  This saw Russian forces move to border regions and the reinforcement of the Kaliningrad Oblast with airborne formations.  The exercises finished a week ago, but these forward deployments are unchanged leading NATO intelligence analysts to assess that Russia and its Belarusian ally planned to attack the Suwalki Gap.  In response NATO has started to move reinforcements into the area including the 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (1 IBCT)/82nd Airborne Division which started to arrive in Vilkaviskis, Lithuania last night.  A Troop 3rd Squadron/73rd Cavalry Regiment (A/3/73 Cav) was one of the first units to arrive and has been rushed west to deal with any Russian supporting eastward attack from the Kaliningrad Oblast.  It is now 1100hrs on June 01, 2017, and the Russians crossed the border 30 minutes ago.  It is warm, clear and there is a gentle west to east wind.
    Mission
A/3/73 Cav guards in the vicinity of Maldenai until 1200hrs, 01 June in order to delay the enemy assault on Vilkaviskis.
    Tasks:
    Destroy enemy reconnaissance.
Disrupt the enemy first echelon battalion.
Deny enemy penetration in greater than platoon strength of the Battle Handover Line.
    Maintain 60% combat effectiveness.
Withdraw no later than 1230hrs, 01 June.
    Friendly Forces
    A/3/73 Cav complete comprising 1st, 2nd and 3rd Platoons each with 2 x M1151 HUMMWV M2, 2 x M1151 HUMMWV Mk19, 2 x M1167 HUMMWV TOW and an LMTV truck.  Also organic to A Troop are 2 x M120 120mm mortars and 1 x RQ11B UAV.  Other support available comes mainly from 3rd Battalion/319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment (3/319 AFAR) comprising Battery A (6 x 105mm M119A3), Battery B (6 x 105mm M119A3) and Battery C (6 x 155mm M777A2).  An additional RQ11B UAV has been assigned to A Troop from 3/73 Cav.
    Enemy Forces
Intelligence assesses that either 7th Guards Separate Motorized Rifle Regiment (7 GMRR) or 79th Guards Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade (79 GMRB), both of 11th Army Corps normally based in the Kaliningrad Oblast will lead the attack.  The S2 assesses that 7 GMRR is the most likely of the two.  Both are equipped with T-72 tanks, 7 GMRR is BMP-2 equipped while 79 GMRB is MTLB equipped.  Whichever formation leads, Intelligence Preparation of the Battlespace (IPB) indicates that the enemy unit will be a battalion-sized force tactically deployed to conduct a meeting engagement.  Its likely mission is to defeat the friendly covering force and secure a jump off point for subsequent echelons to assault Vilkaviskis 7km east of the Battle Handover Line.  There is no threat from enemy air assets.
    Plan
It is your choice commander but be aware that you have been given a tough mission which will stretch the capabilities of your light and small force given that you will be facing a mechanized force that outnumbers you by approximately three to one and your force is not optimized for this kind of mission.
Your plan will need to make best use of ground and your key assets which are your long-range anti-tank and indirect fire weapons.
You must exit the eastern edge of the map (Battle Handover Line) before the mission ends.
Conceptually this is a simple mission that requires a trade-off between inflicting casualties on the enemy, slowing enemy progress across the map while minimizing your own casualties and picking the right time to withdraw and exit the map.  The enemy gets points for advancing across the map, exiting units from the eastern edge of the map and for inflicting blue casualties while minimizing red casualties.  You lack the combat power to destroy every single vehicle, so you need to track your kills and enemy progress in order to choose the right moment to withdraw.  Once you have withdrawn, you should ceasefire.
    Notes
This mission was going to be part of a campaign depicting a ‘what if’ Russian attack on Lithuania which I never really progressed with.  The Russian and US units have been researched and the map is as good as the Combat Mission editor can reproduce of the area depicted.  I spent a lot of time in Street View in Google Earth while making it and I hope you appreciate the result.  If you want to check yourself, the middle of the lake on the map is at Grid 34U FF 2386 5620.  This mission has four Russian AI plans so if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
I hope you enjoy playing the mission.

This has been sat on my hard drive in an 'almost finished' state for a couple of years now.  Prompted by this thread:
I decided to finish it off.

The basic premise is that Russia attacks the Suwalki Gap after a period of tension on the Russian and Belarusian borders with NATO (sound familiar anyone ...).  This mission is set in Lithuania's western border with the Kaliningrad Oblast where a US force has hurriedly deployed in response to a threat of a thrust east out of Kaliningrad in support of the Suwalki Gap attack.
    The map is 3,328m x 1,920m ...

Actually we testers did notice and complained about it a lot, but problem is you are trying to graft a system, PBEM+++, onto the CM engine which was not designed that way ... so you have to use a lot of duct tape and cross your fingers 🙂.  Hopefully, it will be improved, the team has been working on it a lot over the past few months.

While we're snickering at MiG-23, lets remember in this timeframe US is still flying A-7 Corsair which makes MiG-23 look like Star Wars technology in comparison.
