Thomm
Thank you very much for the video! The grass seem to work very well, especially the way it blends with the ground and moves in waves, apparently modulated by the distance from the viewer. The tree model does not work all that well for me, unfortunately. It actually looks 'cartoonish' in the way those branches rotate like they are sitting on an axle. They seem to consist of a cloud of billboard sprites, at least those in the distance. I think that the cure for this problem in the present system could be the superposition of a horizontal translation component to the sprite center which increases with the height of this center. Thus, the bending of the whole tree can be emulated. Also, I think that the oszillations are too wild in the video. I guess you wanted to show a extreme situation, but some times it looked simply too extreme. In this context, I feel that the sprites should rotate less wildly and instead be displaced a little bit to the left or right. With all the necessary maths seemingly in place already I think that should not be too hard to do ... Best regards, Thomm
Melnibone
Agreed - there is something odd about the rotations - especially close up.
PseudoSimonds
I think it's just that the branches aren't moving. Add some sway to the branches and trunk and I think it'd look very natural.
Scipio
Yep, the movement of the branches looks odd. I wonder if all the terraine is destructable: burning grass, splintered trees etc...
Sirocco
I thought the movement of the branches looked odd, too. The movement of the grass was much better, a little too regimented if I'm being hyper critical.
aka_tom_w
Screw the peanut gallery! It looks GREAT, lets move on to the GOOD stuff! (you know stuff that BLOWS UP!) The grass and trees are fine! Bring on the Beta Demo! -tom w

MikeyD
Do you mean individual moving leaves swaying in the sun could slow the system down? Jeez! What I especially like is that it's still recognizably CM. I was fearing that for CMx2 we'd be playing all our games in old Tombraider mazes.
Battlefront.com
Remember guys... this is maxium wind. Next time you have a gale blowing outside, look at how the trees respond to it before passing judgement Oh yeah... and what a bunch of nitpicking ninnies some of you are Steve
Thomm
Now that you mention nitpicking: the main reason that the rotating branches look so odd is the fact that the lighting/shading does not change during the rotation. This is not particularly physical. Best regards, Thomm PS: If you want to be left alone with tom w, just say so!
patboy
I will see a panzer behind these trees as well. Seriously, I was wondering if the clouds move? In fact not they don't move yet, I thought if it's possible to get a weather like in "Grand prix 4", I mean it's sunny and suddenly rainy ? Chelt
It's just like Blow-Up, only with palm trees. Can we get a David Hemmings character who runs around with a camera?

Elmar Bijlsma
They may look slightly odd up close up, but from further away the trees look frigging awesome. Except the palm trees. Their movement is just plain weird and unnatural. Now, I realize the focus of the game is Syrians v USA, not trees v wind, but if there is any tinkering with the trees to be done, start with the palms. Aw heck, I'm a Dutchman, what the smeg do I know about palm trees? Grain, salt, take with.
Hagleboz
Awesome video, very exciting! What an amazing step forward, thanks for keeping us posted on things. I do have to agree with Elmar and the rest of the mob though. Those plam trees do look a little funny.
Other Means
Trees in high winds do tend to move like that, with the groups of leaves moving together. Of course, the whole thing tends to sway too but from a distance it's spot on. Quite evocative actually. And brilliant for an alpha.
Gpig
Looks really amazing! Can't wait to get sucked in. I think what some of the posters are responding too (and that you guys have not doubt observed) is that the top of the palm trees react sort of like a pin-wheel. The entire mass of leaves react as one unit and pin-wheel around the completely stationary trunk. If the trunks swayed slightly as well, it might lessen the contrast. If the palm trees leaves could also be segmented up like the bushes/trees in the foreground and then offset in time, it would add to the overall effect. Keep up the great work you guys! Sgt Joch
Finally had a chance to look at it, looks very impressive. Are the mountains in the background 3d ? They look like the 2d bitmaps in CMx1.
