“Instead of asking for wholesale code-rewrites you could, of course, try out the actual solution(s) that was developed during the war ...”

I could not agree more. I think the CMBB engine models the problems of attacking with infantry very well. One solution, in part, is take it slowly.

actual soulutions? got those, but, what about illum rounds and flares?

Seriously, though..No problems with it, I'm sure it'll be good, but-one thing I want to hear more of is improved 'platoon' commands-More pure armored battles in NA, and I'd like to see more group move commands to keep the suckers in formation with less click work.

From what I can tell flares were used mostly for communications. Since you already have god-like omni-presence, improved communications aren't really necessary ;)

I'm not so sure about illum rounds, but I don't believe they were super-abundant anyway.

In principle, I too would like to see improvements in lighting (in particular dynamic lighting) and the inclusion of flares, illum, fires, etc. But it's not really a game-breaker IMHO.

Some combination of smoke, night, HE generated dust, vehicle generated dust, lowered vis at dawn, lowered vis at dusk, lowered vis due to dust storms (i.e. fog), good use of terrain, rapid approach in armoured or soft vehicles, good suppressive fires, etc., should see infantry attacks able to succeed. Well, some of the time anyway ;) , And they don't require much in the way of code re-writes (except for the dust thing, which is already being done).

Regards

JonS

Ye, I know what you meant. As I said, you have had access to those since CMBO.

Jon,

Well I've just started both CMBO and CMBB and looked in the fortification catergory and all that I can see is the generic grey concrete bunker with a firing slit (a la "The Longest Day").

Is there a mod that I need to get in order to see the Panther turret version??

Nope. What you need to do is stop looking in the fortification category, and start looking in the tank category ;)

What is left above ground when you 'dig in' a tank? ;)

Fair enough. I guess we could argue about point values but I guess a specialised emplacement such as this would probably have a high point value anyway.

Of course it's a marketing decision - the AK is the single most recognisable formation of hte Mediterranian war from all sides.

Maybe where you are, but I think a lot of people probably remember the Desert Rats just as well and they did see action in Sicily as well smile.gif . Still plucky losers are always popular. </font>

With a Panther turret probably, but the gun pits apparently mostly used turrets from Somuas, Renaults and other tanks that weren't deemed fit for combat duty. So most were equipped with somewhat obsolete weaponry that was of no use elsewhere, which would bring the point value down.

Hi all,

Well, besides someone who woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, I am happy to see the responses for you all. Just to clarify two things:

1. The French were accidentally left off the list. We are planning on including Free French forces. Always were too. Just an oversight when typing up the webpages. Vichy French are on the back burner since it might prove more work than it is worth (their time was short and not all that worthy of CM sized battles)

YAAAAAAAAAAOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUH ! ! ! :D:D

Merci beaucoup ! ! ;)

If there's a wishlist, I would like to add a few things for the terraine.

- Stream : a stream represents a small body of running water that hinders movement of most units, but is not deep or wide enough to prohibit movement over it without a bridge.

- Path : this represents a cart path or wide foot path. An ideal way for infantry to move through wooded terraine.

- Gully : A small, dry ravine that acts as an impediment to movement and provides cover to infantry.

And BTW, it would be nice if gullys/trenches could be represnted in 3D. Well, maybe that's one for the engine rewrite.

Well if the Free French are in then I'm definitely gonna plead for the Indians and South Africans again. There were entire Divisions of them fighting in the desert, as against IIRC only one French Brigade.

I also suggested heat haze causing ID problems in high temperatures, and targetting penalties for units facing into the sun at dawn or dusk. These were big problems in the Desert War, and attacks were frequently timed to take advantage of them.

These seem possible to include to the layman ;)
