  1. It is already Utopian. Bunkers in the 1950's where cut toilet rolls with matchsticks for guns. 1960's came along what an improvement. Airfix with British, German, Russian and even US Marines. The latter had to double up for US army too. Yes, the T34 was brilliant large wheels, and you could choose between a 76 mm turret or an 85 mm turret. The Churchill was useless with all those small annoying wheels. Here we are we don't have to assemble a single thing but for the masochist they can mod to their hearts content. Fight on the PC but not against each other.
  2. You can say that again as it is not realistic. You can assign an HMG or a light mortar team to a unit. An AFV can be assigned for support. A unit can have called in for artillery support. I can see no reason why armoured units can't support an artillery mission or be part of an artillery mission.. The fire direction center can receive references from any HQ unit. There are a lot more means of communication apart from the ones in the system. However, I like the suggestion of a HQ unit in close proximity of the unit not necessarily the same C2 structure.
  3. I play on Iron for exactly that reason. Before I start a new turn, I see which units are in visual contact with each other. Say a JS2 Tank (recent scenario). Infantry makes contact and wish the support of the JS2 tank. On Iron by clicking the JS2 tank I see he is in full visual contact so he will spot the infantry unit is firing at. He can area fire at the same building. He wouldn't know if the infantry didn't fire. The other technique is using the fire direction center. I use it also as a communication channel as every HQ can access it. An HQ unit of an armoured formation can also access it and can be directed to the area an Infantry HQ unit has plotted a support mission. To simulate a flare, I use a short smoke mission with a 15-minute delay which I cancel when the IS2 unit arrives. CM doesn't have flares or field telephones therefore hypothetically it is justified. The problem is when you have house rules when you play with other people. Lucky I can play regularly on Hotseat with which it is easy to have a dialog.
  4. Old bulls like to feast on green grass. I like to step out like my father did, on his easy chair with half a glass of whiskey and his book on the floor. I like to step out with an empty glass.
  5. It comes down to macro management, buildings you need to be the first and the last one to shoot. In the beginning you didn't have enough manpower. Your second plan worked and that is the name of the game. Wait till the enemy makes a mistake. Snipers are funny in Combat Mission. Exploit them as spotters first they need to spot without opening fire. They are single and therefore hard to spot. I was lucky I suppose they made contact without being spotted. The platoon team cleaned up most of the village after his unit took the first house. The strategy was to let the German escape from the village and ambush them at the open field. Different players different ideas. Played with my Photo Editing program.
  6. Once the grenades come out it's game over. Fortunately, the British didn't use theirs. It seems small arms fire has no effect whatsoever.
  7. Replay if you play on WEGO and observe what is going on from above on camera position 5.
  8. He didn't mention the distance nor or he shot from a height or at an elevated target. I imagined the MG shot from a distance upwards at the crest of a hill and by plunging fire you can hit troops below the skyline.
  9. When there is full contact the first thing, I do is split especially with US squads. You notice only three or four guys have a full contact the others don't. With a bolt rifle I give manual fire orders (they stop firing when they lose contacts). If I remember correctly the snipers are a veteran and an elite and the key was to make sure they get the contact icon of the others. Later when you get the DPM that is your area weapon which permits the sub machine gunners to approach the dacha. Small arms against hard cover is pretty ineffective. Inside the dacha in a melee, it is a different story preceded by some hand grenades. At the time of the German surrender.
  10. Plunging fire, an LOF is a straight-line calculation a trajectory is never a straight line.
  11. Here I sit in front of my screen playing CM huge scenario it is 8 am and hopefully finish it at 8pm. Age 71 living of my pension. Young people are welcome to drop in and play against me.
  12. True? according to their doctrine you don't have to keep your promise to unbelievers.
  13. It is called in After Action Report don't read them if you don't like spoilers. I tried to delete it but the system won't let me. Happy gaming I appreciate other people's tips but you call them spoilers. Now see or you can win this scenario.
  14. Assault is the conclusion attack is the onset, but we must be careful in our choice of words. Assault in CM is I think when you deal with only or mostly terrain objectives and there are no points for destroying enemy units. It becomes straight out attrition as long as the body count is in your favour you win the game. Whenever you move a unit make sure the unit is covered. The mistake of George W Bush 'mission accomplished.' The enemy decides if our mission was accomplished not us. What is best having units with lots of satchel charges. Make your own doors and windows with them, looks a little rough but are a lot better.
  15. Testing I used this time BN in regards spotting. I play on Iron as you must spot your own forces too. BN is more suitable than RT for this test. Unless forces inside a building open fire you won't spot them. After they open fire it takes the squad on the hilltop eleven seconds to spot troops inside the farm. In a previous test my scouting unit must approach the farm inside 25 meters before there is full contact with the units inside the farm.
  16. All good I remember next time after a while you can't even edit your own posts anymore. Happy gaming.
  17. Thank you it is what this forum is for tips and different ideas. Start the game with a map recon and use the xo to mark the spots. But remember each square represents eight by eight meters but does the calculation per square meter. It doesn't guarantee a kill, the odds only get in your favour.
  18. Yep it is common sense, like tracer it works both ways. To make it work you need to watch the C2 the squad of partisans must be in visual with the sniper who is on overwatch.
  19. Really? I thought that AAR stands for After Action Report. But OK he doesn't need to read it. Just to make you happy I delete it. I thought we compared tactics. I can't even edit it anymore. But feel free to report it.
  20. I just give you some tips how to use the snipers. I enjoyed this I do 'back chaining' let me explain. I forgot to mention you highlight your original waypoint and change it also to hunt and drag it towards your point of deployment. I use always quick to start as it is a bright yellow. I crawl the last 8 meters so change hunt to slow. Once the firefight started he broke the German's morale.
  21. Yalta Conference the last dirty trick. Roosevelt was on borrowed time and was not fit. Britain was broke, and already handed the US the baton for post war Europe. Yalta was close to the Soviet Union and the same can be said about Alaska.
  22. Just remember Dinner Plate Magazine and you never forget this MG.
  23. The only thing they had in common was a liking to alcohol. Stalin was even disowned by Nikita Khrushchev. A system which was not sustainable but had the power to make people's lives miserable for a few generations.
