Just finished 'The Savior Generals' by Victor Davis Hanson.
It never occurred to me much before how the divergence of political opinion from military reality can so quickly destroy what would otherwise be a successful military action, in the case of Tecumseh Sherman.
I also really enjoyed the part about Matthew Ridgeway, being a general I know little about, and now feel keen to correct that shortcoming.
...and I feel a kind of kindred spirit in Belisarius. I think he and I would have been friends, of a sort. The ability to simply throw the book out the window and do what's best to win is a skill few commanders posses, and even if they posses it, they rarely exercise it in light of outside considerations.

I'm playing CMBN and having lots of fun.  You are not having fun w CMBN, STTP, we hear you -- but does that mean you don't play CM games anymore?  And if I hit this bug I'll be pissed.
But this thread is about what that new person should buy -- and that person hasn't posted once on this thread since the first page.  So maybe this should all move to a bug thread?  the new guy probably thinks these games are crap by now, which they certainly are not, which is why we are all here.

So the British Ministry of Defense is subsidizing me playing w my toy soliders & tanks?  And all I have to do for this is wait a little longer for the new release?  I am considering this a win for all of us CM gamers.  So maybe I'll not throw temper tantrums and wet  my pants over not getting my toy immediately.

Haven't seen the movie, but you have definitely perked my interest. With regard to coming out of the woods as it relates to this excellent scenario, I think this shot says it all. Cheers!

I've been back to CMBN for the last 6 weeks or so.  I am having a ton of fun.  I'm replaying some battles I first tried when I was new to CM ~4 or 5 years ago, and there's still lots of battles I never played at all.  Lots of nasty battles as Brits, Canadians, US, Germans, some w heavy bocage, some out in more open terrain, some in ditch & dike terrain in Holland.  Nothing scary like a pack of panthers coming across a field and all your sherman shells are bouncing off the front armor -- then you gotta get clever fast.

There's no spending an hour issuing orders if you play REALTIME . CM is as easy or as intimidating as you make it, yourself. Take scenario design, for example. Some scenario designers spend months building giant real-world maps and meticulously researching historical units for historical battles. Others plop a farmhouse next to a country road and have at it with randomly selected forces (you can probably guess which one I am).
One thing that hasn't been mentioned is how EDUCATIONAL CM is. Not just becoming intimately familiar with period weapons and their capabilities, or the reading details of historical battles at historical locations, there's also applying tactics straight out of field manuals.

It's inevitable when people are passionate about a subject.
If anything, it should be taken as a compliment that Combat Mission is a good enough game for people to get their panties in a twist about it.
Dispassionate mediocrity is the final death knell for a game franchise.

Although we are WWII, I thought some of you, especially the Brits would like to hear this.
The rock group Sabaton is considered a heavy metal band but they sing mostly songs about the various wars and battles throughout history.  They are actually quite good, you can understand what they are saying and are not obnoxiously loud. Plus they are generally all historically accurate.  Their latest album is about WWI.
This one is probably the best ever: Flanders Fields and isn't what you would expect.

Interesting that we are all at the funeral of our still living friend.  It's his 50th birthday, he aint dead.  Yeah, he definitely could be better in 1000 ways, and all BF needs is a lot more money and people, which they don't have, to make that happen as fast as we want it to happen.
And why does this always have to degenerate into personal criticisms or conspiracy theories?  They are a small team and simply can't do it all.  Are there actually people here that never worked on teams that had limited resources and had to prioritize?  Had to choose what to do and what to delay?

Just want to pipe in that not EVERYBODY prefers WeGo play. As long as scenario size is not too cumbersome I much prefer playing Realtime. I've said before that there are (at least) two forms of play. One could be called '3-D table-top wargame' and the other is 'interactive war movie'. Some people play almost exclusively from a high elevation looking down on the action. Others stay down in the weeds with the troops as much as they can. It all depends on what you're in it for.

To be clear, WEGO is REAL TIME, but with fixed pauses at 1 minute intervals.  We all play this way because we can watch the replay of that one minute from anywhere on the map.  In regular real time, most of the action in large battles is missed because you can't be in two (or four) places at once.  w WEGO, if you have multiple sectors you can watch everything that happens in each sector.

I think it's in the interest of the health & safety of people all over the world that this is released ASAP.  It would guarantee that at least the CMRT community would happily abide by any quarantine.  I'd certainly be happy in my basement w my computer for several weeks.
