Mini map pack for Battlefront Combat Mission Red Thunder
    --------------------------------------------------------------

    Description:

Three maps in Estonia one in Latvia.
All the maps in this mini pack are based on google earth satellite images, photos and also street view when available, not historical maps. So obviously these locations were not identical during ww2. I however tried to downgrade the type of roads when I thought it made sense, on rare occasions removed a couple of houses or farms here and there but for the most part they're as accurate as I could make them.
Some have attack or meeting engagement setups, some are raw (no deployment zones or objectives). The latter will require a little bit of work to be playable.
I tried as much as possible to frame the maps so they're versatile and can be used in various ways: both for meeting engagements and attacks. But there are also usually several possible setups that you could use i.e different directions for the attack with potential objectives and road in all cardinal directions. There is often not just one single way to play them.
It should be noted that most of these maps, except Talvikese which is fairly open with rural terrain, are basically dirt roads going through forests, marshy ground and lakes. So it can be very easy if played as attacks or assaults to block the roads with anti tank mines depending on the deployment zones. So you could just have infantry battles, have an agreement with your opponent to limit the usage of mines or even modify the terrain a little bit by replacing marshy ground with mud or something else where needed. Or just play them as is. It is up to you.
Feel free to use them for whatever you want. Simply credit me and provide a link to this thread.

    The maps:

1/ Estonia - Kapera (raw map)

    size: 1408 X 1072m
    type: forest/rural
    60km west of Pskov
    google earth coordinates: 57°46'12.40"N 27°19'33.80"E

2/ Estonia - Kahri Koorvere road

Zveroboy1 got a reaction from George MC in Zveroboy's Aleppo Buildings Texture Pack + Bonus Urban Map
    ---------------
      DESCRIPTION
    ---------------
This is a modification pack designed for the Battlefront game Combat Mission Shock Force 2 which replaces the textures of buildings and walls.
This pack draws its inspiration from the Syrian city of Aleppo. While it is probably suitable for any area in the Middle East, it is specifically based on pictures of Aleppo and the surrounding region and tries to capture the particular architecture, building materials and colour palette of this city.
Almost all the textures are twice the size of the default textures, except building interiors, floors and minor details.
It includes twelve new buildings; eight that replace the default ones and an extra four as a bonus. These four extra buildings shouldn't appear in any existing scenarios. They are designed to be used by scenario designers or map makers in their future projects and will require the players to also have them installed in their mod folder to be visible. Otherwise they will just be replaced by the game with a random building texture.
The four extra buildings are :
building n°9 : an affluent residential house cleaner and less derelict looking than the rest.
building n°10 : a school or an official or governmental building.
building n°11 : an extra sandy coloured house that doubles up as a mosque.
building n°12 : an additional dirty white greyish building.

    --------------
       MODTAGS
    --------------
    There are two modtags:
    [aleppomosque]
This modtag modifies the building n°11 to make it look like a Syrian mosque.
    [alepposhop]
This tag replaces the facades of four of the single storey buildings with shopfronts or garage doors. It only replaces single storey buildings and doesn't affect multi-storey buildings at all.
It is best used to represent bazaars or small shops placed in between taller buildings.
Indeed, since the shopfront texture will show on all sides of the buildings it is preferable to place normal buildings adjacent to the left and right of the shop(s) to get a better visual effect.
The other downside of this modtag is that you automatically get four less single storey buildings to use for normal purposes but I felt it was worth including because it adds a nice touch to towns and cities if used right.
    --------------
     INSTALLATION
    --------------
Extract the mod in your Documents/Battlefront/Combat Mission/Shock Force 2/User Data/Mods. If there isn't already a folder named 'Mods' just create one.
For Steam users, extract the mod in your Shock Force 2/Data/Z folder.
    --------------
       OPTIONS
    --------------
There are two sets of options :
One for the colour of the mosque dome, please consult the separate readme located in the 'details and others' folder.
One used to add or remove propaganda posters and flags on the facade of some buildings and shops to add a bit of local flavour. There are three options available : Syria, Iraq or generic. There is a readme included inside the 'Building Options' folder for details.
    --------------
       CREDITS
    --------------
I took the liberty of adding a slightly desaturated version of Pete Wenman's rural wall, included in the SF2 Squalor mod, to make it blend in a bit better with the rest of the mod. I hope he doesn't mind.

    Notes :
Included in the download are both a version with setup zones and objectives for a meeting engagement and a raw version with nothing, only landmarks.
While the map is quite large, the setup zones are not that big, so either enlarge them a bit before playing or pick a relatively small force. There should be plenty of time to deploy though given the length of the map so even if it gets a bit crowded at the start it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I am going to post the first scenario I made about Lohvynove in its own separate thread but here is the full map. I plan on making two scenarios based on it but neither of them will use the full map. Both of them will be slightly cropped.

This is a raw map with no units, setup zones or AI plans.
    Lohvynove or Logvinovo in Russian.
Located 7 km north of Debaltseve, Donbas, Ukraine. This is the place where the pro-Russian separatists closed the encirclement of the Ukrainian forces in Debaltseve in february 2015. As far as I understand it, the gist of it is that the encirclement was never totally complete however and most of the units involved managed to withdraw, lots of vehicles had to be left behind but the Ukrainian forces in the bulge or pocket managed to escape more or less intact albeit in a lot of confusion, either running the gauntlet on the semi closed main road or using small country roads to escape.
    map size : 3472 X 3152 m
    type : open/village
Scroll up for a preview of the map. This one is slightly bigger than in the previous picture.

Okay here is the last and hopefully final version of Nikishyne.

I added a winter version, changed the cultural centre building, fixed a bunch of small details all over the place and in particular re-designed tons of interior walls/doors in buildings like the secondary school and the warehouses in the industrial area of the map and elsewhere that were not connected.
There is one small quirk that players should be aware of.

The map is full of houses like this with a shed attached to a house. Some of them are connected and you can go from one to the other even though you can only see a door in the house, not the shed, but they work both ways. In some cases there is a window and you can shoot from the shed to the house and vice versa. So pay attention. It is on purpose because in some cases you can't have a window just on one side of the house and I didn't like having this particular house with a blind side there and for some other reasons that are too long to explain.

Hmm yes you probably need 8GB to be comfortable.
I don't know why I said Horlivka, my bad. Well I have one of the Gagarin mine near Chyhari that I will probably try to finish next. But I meant Vuhlehirsk.

So I have been toying with the map editor in Combat Mission ever since I got Black Sea a couple of years ago and I have half a dozen maps that I am fairly happy with, pretty much all of them 90% complete. Most of them are maps of the Donbas region where fighting actually took place but there are also a couple that I simply picked because the topography looked interesting. I have downloaded tons of stuff over the years from other people, scenarios, campaigns, maps and loads of mods so I thought I'd post what I have here. Is not purely unselfish because I also hope it might encourage other people like me to share their work with the community.
All these maps are based on real terrain and topography, using google earth, tons of photos and a bit of creative license from time to time. But I tried to stick as much as possible to the real terrain. I am going to provide a couple of satellite pictures for each one because some people might find it interesting to know where they are located. But obviously you're free to use them for whatever purpose you like and pretend it is a place in Greenland or Kentucky if you feel like it.
I decided to post them all in a single thread and plan on releasing them in the next weeks as I put the finishing touches to them. I got one of Nikishyno and Logvynovo in the Debaltseve area in particular that people might like.
Again feel free to use these for whatever you want. All I ask is that you link to this thread if you end up using them to create a scenario with one of them for instance. Also if you are some sort of genius or mastermind who knows how to create an AI plan for quick battles and make one for one of these maps, please post it here.

    Description :
This is a small scale urban scenario with a low unit density taking place during the year 2005 in Iraq . You get to play a local cell of AQI insurgents fighters launching a car bomb attack on an Iraqi manned checkpoint followed by an assault on the town.
    Mission length : 50 minutes
    Map size : 600 X 650 m

There are 5 AI plans : a main plan and four variants, each one with minor differences and a semi randomized unit placement.
    Play as Red attacker only.

    Extract from the briefing :
Traditionally a Sunni stronghold, Mahmudiyah, located only 20 km south of Baghdad inside what the coalition dubbed the Triangle of death, belongs to the belts of towns around the capital that both the US forces and insurgents tried to control.
Its importance lies in the fact that it was used as a support zone for insurgents both Sunni and Shi'a alike where fighters could regroup, weapons get stored and attacks planned on Baghdad. Vital for securing communications and logistics, these towns served as staging points and were heavily contested.
During the 2005 pre-election period, Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) intensified its terror campaign to further destabilize the country and set in motion a sectarian civil war. Often using car bombs these attacks were usually focused on the civilian population or Iraqi security forces rather than the coalition.

    map size : 2100 X 1900 m
    type : village
Nikishyne saw a lot of fighting in 2015 during the battle for Debaltseve. I might post more in depth background info later. But at the end of the battle, it was basically a field of rubble with barely any house intact.

View from the South West :

    From the North East :

    Notes :
Again the setup zones aren't that big. They're sufficient for a small force.
I added objectives and setup zones for a meeting engagement so people could give the map a go and have some fun either as a pbem or a hotseat game. Historically the setup zones don't make a lot of sense though. I am aware of that. As far as I understand, the Ukrainian forces were reinforcing the village from the North and North-West and the separatists were coming from the South or South East. I picked these setup zones because I think they offer the most interesting tactical options and are more or less fair for both sides but they're not historical at all.

Zveroboy1 got a reaction from kohlenklau in Is there a way to put the mujahedeen models from Combat Mission Afghanistan into shock force 2?
Mord suggested this when I was working on my Afghanistan mod and I gave it a quick try. It was several years ago so I don't remember all the details and this is just from memory but the biggest problem was the texturing, not so much importing the models.
The SF2 texture files or skins don't wrap around the CMA models properly. So you'd have to redo the skins entirely from scratch with no template. In theory it is doable but probably a pain in the butt. There were other issues too like the headpiece or the faces being attached to the CMA model but a separate file in SF2 or something alone these lines. Finally some bits are shared between different units, the boots from uncon fighters are shared with regular Syrian infantry etc so that causes issues too depending on which unit you swap it with.

As far as I understand it.... The loses on these sites get counted based on the visual evidence uploaded to the internet.  So he(she) may well be counting something that was destroyed or filmed a few weeks/days ago but only now been uploaded.  I read a tweet that said he spent some time yesterday catching up on the UKR loses. So, for what it's worth, I don't think you can necessarily say lost in just a single day.  That doesn't change the sentiment that the RF appears to be losing a awful lot of equipment.

The partially detached Sport Life gym created an overhang parking / loading area, and it looks like this building was targeted directly. Probably some equipment was parked there (as pictured at some point previously) so it couldn’t be observed from overhead (although there are no doubt eyes on the ground in Kyiv doing targeting work for Russia).

I don't see how this is going to work. While it looks like you are right and many Russians do want to have a "strong man" at the top who somehow restores Russia to its former glory, how can you force them to change their mind? There is no historical evidence that punishing a people for their government ever worked (correct me if I missed something). There are a bunch of countries which had sanctions imposed on them for decades like Cuba, Iran, North Korea. Did they overthrow their government? No, on the contrary isolation help the respective regime to tighten its grip.
As a German I'd say let's look at what we can learn from history: As Steve pointed out, after WW1, Germany was isolated and severly punished. What good did it do? It only served to give the Germans a deep feeling of humiliation combined with growing resentment towards democracy. The latter because a) they actually stuck to the Versaille Treaty and paid the reparations and b) since democracy really has to be learned, the democratic parties grew quite detached from the people and often only served their own needs. Added to all that came worldwide economic crisis of 1929 which struck (as far as memory serves) Germany the hardest in all of europe. Enter Hitler, the "strong man" who gave the people a feeling of "being someone again", improved the economic situation (doesn't matter that hald of it was based on plans of the previous government and the other half was indebting the country like there's no tomorrow, what counts is perception). By contrast, after WW2, the (western) Allies helped Germany and after a relatively short time Western Germany was welcomed back to international community (again, doesn't matter that this in large parts wasn't kindness but needing the Germans agains the Soviet Union and the Marshall Plan helped the US at least as much as it helped Germany, again, what counts is perception).
So, now there is Russia. After the fall of communism what happend? In Russian perception democracy just meant a weak and always drunk Boris Jelzin who stood by and watched while corrupt oligarchs together with "Western" capitalist companies plundered Russia. This in combination with seeing how the once mighty Soviet Union was now, as Russia, only called a "regional power" by western politicians that could do nothing to prevent the former enemy (USA = NATO = EU (perception...)) from encroaching on their borders. Enter Putin. And I fail to see how this would change with further isolating Russia after a hypothetical regime change.
That said, I'm no Russia-Apologist, it doesn't justify attacking another country. Still it would be a grave mistake not to see that pattern and to draw the necessary conclusions from it.

Zveroboy1 reacted to WimO in Favourite map not showing up in Quick Battle?
Have you ever had the problem of a map that you want to use for a Quick Battle not showing up when setting up the scenario? This easily resolved issue relates to another, have you ever wanted to play with a small OOB on a large or huge map and found it impossible?  The problem and the solution reside in the selection of scenario size. When you choose a size setting for a scenario, e.g. 'small', the QB creation program provides a small number  of points to create your OOB and it selects a map from the list of maps that the map designers have labelled 'small'.  The solution with making a favourite lare or huge map appear in all sizes of scenarios is to make copies of the map file and label them individually 'small', 'medium', 'large' and/or 'huge'. This will make that map appear in each of the size selected scenarios. For example, you would now be able to use a huge map with a small OOB.
