Mortars can be fired quite quickly and are very high angle weapons, so after calling "Check Fire" there can be a fairly large number of rounds already in the air that have yet to impact. Time of flight can be up to 50 seconds or so depending on the range and the size of the mortar.
Real life example from the 82d Abn. As a FIST Chief we were calling mortars danger close, and the rounds were gradually walking back towards us. Called "Check Fire" and got the reply "Rounds Complete".  Which meant exactly as I described - 20 or so rounds still to impact. We fell back. What had happened was the mortar baseplates were grinding into soft ground causing the tubes to elevate slightly (and therefore bringing the rounds closer). The crew hadn't noticed the change, which was pretty slight - but with close rounds, it made a BIG difference to us up front.

Your Real Life example ... with 20 or so rounds still to impact is very sound reason to FALL BACK. 👍
You description regarding the game is what I experience as well....rounds already in the air that have yet to impact.

As a FIST Chief I worked with them. Assuming you have air superiority and a minimal ground AA threat, they would own one of these SF2 battlefields. Sit back and watch the show. But note my caveats.
Makes it tough - either they are at risk (and they don't like to be at risk), or they pretty much tip the balance so far that the battle becomes target practice for the Spectre.

I'll just throw out there that an Apache strike is pretty much the same effect an AC-130 strike would have in game turns.  So load up a couple and have fun.

Many years ago, my group leader on the phone promised to deliver something by a date we knew we'd miss by 3 weeks. But the guy from Naval Reactors was adamant. "You absolutely CANNOT miss this date. So are you going to meet the date?"  So Bob said, "Yes, sir".  After he hung up we both asked why he told him that knowing that THEY hadn't given us data we needed yet and it would be 3 more weeks assuming we got the data tomorrow.
He told us "Don't worry about it. You just keep working. I'll handle him. But let me tell you something. Ten years from now he won't remember if you were late, but he WILL remember if you are wrong."
We always tried to keep our commitments but we made sure it was right first (these are nuclear submarines we're talking about, so a little more critical than a wargame/simulation).

That's actually what we tried to do with all those screenshots Steve put up on the SF2 page. New vehicle textures, uniforms, terrain (maps are much nicer)..

As others have pointed out the game itself is pretty simple... its UI is FAR more simple to understand than some Paradox monster for instance.
Even the tactics are fairly simple really... find the enemy, fix the enemy, flank the enemy & finish the enemy... the four f's.
The biggest issue is not game related, it is psychology related.
Most people play games which have been designed to be fun & enjoyable... in CM you will be playing scenarios designed to be annoying.
You don't have as much artillery as you like? It was designed that way. You rushed that platoon in the machine gun filled village because you thought it'd be safe... designed that way.
If you think about a CM scenario maker as an evil, twisted creature determined to humiliate you & laugh at your dead pixeltruppen then you probably won't go too far wrong.
DON'T cross the street... just don't. Find another way... do you have demo charges? Smoke? A way to bust through walls? A long-winded outflanking move you hadn't previously considered? Can you at least suppress suspicious buildings before you cross?
    Do that instead.
    NEVER cross the street.

It might be a better idea to open a support ticket now (that was the recommenced action to take) since once the game comes out Support will be busy. My understanding was that they would find your records and give you a valid key so that when the update install asks for your original key you will have it handy.

Yes. And between all those new QB maps and the upgrade of the whole QB system to work the same way as the rest of the current titles, that alone is worth the upgrade, IMO!

Originally Steve said CMSF2 was going to 'just' be CMSF1 upgraded to the latest game engine.
    Then 'mission creep' set in.
Now all of the art as been swapped out, the TO&E rebuilt from scratch, The scenarios thoroughly updated and beautified, with fresh AI plans put in. There's new on-map mortars, AA missiles, plus AA guns that work. The soldiers have new models and new uniform textures. And let's not forget trenches, fox holes, barbed wire, water, bridges and amphibious capability. Plus something Steve said he wouldn't do - added vehicles! US Army  and Marines, Brit and German now have on-map mortar vehicles. Also those 'speculative' Syrian T-72 types from CMSF1 have been rebuilt into verified Syrian T-72 types. And lets not forget the biggest thing of all - the fully function upgraded Quick Battle system with (last count) 243 new maps!  So saying its 'just' a game engine upgrade isn't doing it justice.

Scenarios updated with upgraded maps, better and more AI plans, and in some cases force changes for better play/balance. Same scenarios are there, but in many cases will be a new experience.

Game development updates don't really mean much. Game engine work is across the board so that's no indication. BFC has an impressive list of stuff nearing the final stages of completion after several years of work, there's a LOT that is 'almost done'. The CMSF2 project had unexpectedly  jumped the queue so became the first to get completed. After CMSF2 drops I do not know which of the 'almost done'  projects will switch to 'all-hand-on-deck' next. I could flip a coin and tell you the results., that would be as valid as any 'estimate'.
