Syrian Army Realism Mod 1.0
A Canadian Cat replied to Sir Lancelot's topic in CM Shock Force 2 Maps and Mods
That is terrible advice. Don't do that. So, people don't read they also don't notice new threads and it divides up the conversation. Keep working on your mod. Keep the discussion in one place and as you release new versions delete the old ones so worst case scenario you can point them right when they ask what happened to the link. Once you are done your work upload the mod to CMMods (http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/cm-mod-warehouse/) and announce that here. Don't for get to delete the drop box files so people don't get old versions. -
Update on Engine 4 patches
A Canadian Cat replied to Battlefront.com's topic in Combat Mission - General Discussion
Nice one - that was the exact technique I used to try to find the original explanation of the way artillery shells are counted and I came up empty. Glad you got at least one such posting. I was sure that Steve or @MikeyD or @c3k had written something but I could not find it. -
Update on Engine 4 patches
A Canadian Cat replied to Battlefront.com's topic in Combat Mission - General Discussion
Thanks for the info, someone wrote almost the same in "The Few Good Men" forum, really strange way to determine penetration value - but it is what it is, they really need to change it. I'll copy/paste your list! LOL I may well have learned it form testing that @MOS:96B2P did. -
Yikes, I think that falls into the "that would be very bad" category. Can you imagine the threads on here with titles like "I fired one flare and some guy ended up spotted and dead 1000m away WTF". I'd like to see illumination as much as the next guy but a quick and dirty hack like that would be far worse than not having them.

And if the negative feedback gets applied (i.e. dead TC and then moments later brewed up tank form the ATGM) then that's awesome. We just need to watch out for if we have a case of foolhardy moves repeatedly resulting in positive feedback (in this case running tank, happy TC and dead ATGM team). Remember that statistics matter. Some fool might open the hatch and get lucky so as long as the game favours sad TCs in these situations that's what we are looking for. In other words just because you found one example of an outcome that is not the optimal outcome does not mean there is a bug. Like Steve was asking we need to know the ranges and other situational information as well as what variety of outcomes are possible.

What @Bulletpoint and @RockinHarry say is correct. I would like to point out thought that there is a speed difference. If you give the same vehicle type a fast move order down a road, a fast move order over grass and a fast move order over muddy terrain they will not all travel at top speed. So, while *you* issuing a slow move order will not change the bogging chances the driver is already choosing to go slower over difficult terrain. I have not tested how fine grained this is modelled but there is a difference that the game is automatically applying.

You know its bad when you start counting tires punctured on your win column Loving the AAR - some really nice pictures of the action too. -
any more Interest in CMBN (or any WW2) sound mods?
A Canadian Cat replied to RockinHarry's topic in CM Normandy Maps and Mods
+1 actually wouldn´t be hard to pull off code wise. We already have a file tagging system implemented and the game makes use of it for various hard coded things already. "If experience level veteran = use tag x" and so on. True this would be cool, true this would not be a particularly heavy lift to code. The big thing stopping them is going to be that sound resources are a resource drain bigger than graphics with this current engine. So, while I cannot speak to Steve's feelings or priorities, I would predict something like this would not be a likely candidate to rise to near the top of the cool things we should actually do list. -

A Canadian Cat replied to RockinHarry's topic in CM Normandy Maps and Mods
I have tried a few too and uninstalled them. Don't get me wrong I think it's great that they exist and you guys enjoy them but I agree with @Bulletpoint on this. I'll also add that sometimes the volume levelling was inconsistent: one moment things sounded fine and then a new sound started that was significantly louder that other sounds. I am talking about louder such that made no in game sense. Kinda like listening to a play list where one song is quiet so you turn it up and the next one is way louder and you get surprised. It's kinda like movie mode - some people like it but I just don't see the appeal. Or the de-saturated terrain mods - I just think it makes CMBN look unrealistic. Now I have never tried one from @RockinHarry so perhaps I'll try one more time. -
When HE is gone, so is the WP?
A Canadian Cat replied to hub6actual's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 2
Dang I cannot find an earlier explanation. I am certain it has been discussed before and I would like to find it to add it to my FAQ post. If anyone does find an earlier link please point me to it. The explanation goes like this. If you have 100 HE listed and 10 smoke listed what your battery actually has is 100 sets of propellant and 100 HE shells and 10 smoke shells. Therefore your gun crews can fire 10 smoke and 90 HE or 5 smoke and 95 HE or 100 HE or any combination that totals 100. -
I would put it differently: IMHO a big part of the 'Art of CM' is working out how to give your troops the best chance to perform well. Regardless of the actual outcome consider that many things are possible and what just happened *is* one of those out comes in fact it is the one that *did* happen. If it was a good outcome follow up and exploit your advantage. If it was a bad outcome roll with it and figure out a new way forward, commanders have to do that IRL all the time - real life doesn't have do-overs.

Nice - I augmented the previous report to include info on all three CF sniper team loadouts. -
Just bought, won't work, "Assertion Error"
A Canadian Cat replied to MalakieUSN's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 2
That is not supposed to be the case. I never head the original and did not have to install it first. Clearly not an upgrade for me mind you. For those that did buy the upgrade you were supposed to just enter the old keys along with the new keys. Did you work with support on this? Are they aware of this resolution? -
Rafael's idea of future armored vehicles

There is no cloud - it's just someone eles's computer https://teespring.com/shop/there-is-no-cloud#pid=369&cid=6514&sid=front So, someone else can hack into it and use it as part of their bot net to generate denial of service attacks for a fee. https://io9.gizmodo.com/hacked-fridge-sends-out-malicious-emails-in-unprecedent-1503472917 https://techcrunch.com/2018/12/20/fbi-ddos-booter-sites-offline/ -
What they said Here is the procedure for upgrading a PBEM game. open and watch the turn as usual press the BRB to get to the command phase - save it (I usually add _save to the end so that the auto number does not get messed with - this is not requirred) exit the game apply the patch - (note if you are worried about the doomsday scenario that @Bud Backer describes make a copy of your game install and patch one of them so you could revert back to the unpatched version if you need to) open the saved file with the newly patched game finish your orders press the BRB to generate the new email file - (delete the _save 001 off the end if you did the optional name change in step 2) Continue happily with your PBEM game as @Heirloom_Tomato describes. Note: if you hear odd sounds or constant air attack sounds just ignore them. Sometimes that happens usually they are just for the first minute after the patch. The longest I have had it happen was 2 minutes.

Licensing issues definitely require professional help: Battlefront Help desk

The activation of the new game requires keys from the old game and from the new game. So if you just have the base game you need to enter the SF1 base game key and the SF2 base game key. If you have modules you need to add the original keys for those modules. I think the new key should include the base game and any modules you bought as part of a bundle. If that doens't work: seek professional help - no not that kind - this kind Battlefront Help desk

Wow I thought that would by easy but the Windows 10 UI doesn't allow removing an association just changing the app the file type is associated with. WTH. Anyway here is a link to how to dig into the registry and clean it up: https://troubleshooter.xyz/wiki/how-to-remove-file-type-associations-in-windows-10/#Option_3_Registry_Fix_for_removing_File_Association I have personally not done this but it looks correct after reviewing it.

New Scenario: Coup D'etat
A Canadian Cat replied to MOS:96B2P's topic in CM Shock Force 2 Maps and Mods
OK so the police are on the government side. Wait they switch sides? How could you possibly do this? I am curious what trickery / game mechanic you are using for this. -

Actually that is a user to user forum. You might get some help there but I would recommend that you open a support ticket: https://battlefront.mojohelpdesk.com
